OT: Ohio State Recruit Arrested While on Official Visit

Submitted by geewhiz99 on

Four-star wide receiver James Robinson was arrested last weekend by Columbus police while on an official visit to Ohio State and charged with one count of possession of marijuana, according to Franklin County Municipal Court records.

Robinson, a 6-foot-4, 207-pound wideout from Lakeland, Florida, was taken into custody at an off-campus apartment on the night of Jan. 21 and released later that evening. He returned to Florida the next day, but is scheduled to appear in court for arraignment on March 1.

When someone posted one of the final rankings a week ago I swear I looked at one and Martin was in the overall top 50. Don't remember which site it was. That's what I was referring to.

Also, my original comment was supposed to come off as a sarcastic "suuuure OSU fans, your team is passing on him" when really they just can't get him

I was thinking it was more along the lines of forcing the kid to be in Columbus. All of a sudden he has to be at the police department every other week to meet his probation officer and other terms in Columbus... so hey you might as well commit to the university since you have to be here for your probation anyway !!

- Starters are completely off-limits from police
- Second string given a stern glance
- Practice squad given a verbal warning
- 5-star recruits are given second string treatment
- 4-star and below recruits ticketed with Minor in Possession (a misdemeanor)

Clearly, Robinson was with current members of the team.

1. Make Sure that You Don't Suck

Before you go out and committing crimes, it's important to first make sure you're at least slightly better than the 30 or 40 guys the team's assistant GM could instantly pull off some practice squad to replace you. Otherwise you will become fodder for the team's zero-tolerance policy. Conversely, if you're awesome, the line will be, "There've been some bumps in the road, but hopefully he's learned from that".

Several years ago, I worked at a 21+ bar on the OSU campus.  One night, a bunch of OSU players came in with none other than... Braxton Miller.  He was a recruit at that time.  I believe that he was actually 17.  I didn't know any of this until after close, when the owners caught wind of it.

Believe it or not, the security staff got their asses chewed harder than I've ever heard.  But yeah, figured this anecdote was pretty applicable here.

star athlete in a bar... color me surprised... unless your bar was already being watched by the cops and or liquor inspector I don't see why the owners would care that much... happens everywhere which doesn't make it right you just don't flaunt it and bring attention to it...

Yup, perfect fit for a Buckeye..... because Michigan FB players don't and have never smoked dope, at least not while they're talking to Santa and the Tooth Fairy.

It will show up in a background check.  I was a baseball league president and had to run background checks on coaching applicants.  There was always at least one that would come back for weed possession. They weren't allowed to be coaches.

Also, from studentaid.ed.gov:

Is it true that drug convictions might affect my ability to get federal student aid?

Yes; your eligibility might be suspended if the offense occurred while you were receiving federal student aid (grants, loans, or work-study). When you complete the FAFSA, you will be asked whether you had a drug conviction for an offense that occurred while you were receiving federal student aid. If the answer is yes, you will be provided a worksheet to help you determine whether your conviction affects your eligibility for federal student aid.

If your eligibility for federal student aid has been suspended due to a drug conviction, you can regain eligibility early by successfully completing an approved drug rehabilitation program or by passing two unannounced drug tests administered by an approved drug rehabilitation program. If you regain eligibility during the award year, notify your financial aid office immediately so you can get any aid you’re eligible for.

If you are convicted of a drug-related offense after you submit the FAFSA, you might lose eligibility for federal student aid, and you might be liable for returning any financial aid you received during a period of ineligibility.

I got caught with weed by the police when I was 19 (in Grand Rapids, not Ann Arbor) and it was pretty comparable to getting an MIP except I had to take like 3 piss tests over a 6 month period. My parents weren't psyched about it but it wasn't a big deal at all. And this was 14 years ago.

The only negative to legal weed is the big pharma/agro/chemical companies like Bayer/Monsanto taking it over and genetically modifying it and creating a monopoly of some sort which believe me they are already trying to do.

At the same time, think of the relief on the criminal justice system from all the "crime" that disappears overnight. I guess if you're in that business somehow maybe you don't want the gravy train to end but it's for the greater good of the public big time.

So who hosted him and gave him the weed? I think that's the more compelling question. Kid is from Florida so I am assuming he didn't fly it up. Also assuming he didn't walk around the street asking random people for a hookup.
