OT: The Official "Tom Izzo's Team Is Garbage" Posbang Thread
Nobody said you didn't deserve this (although what do you mean by that exactly?). Why do you think you know anything about me or how long I've been a fan? In any case it's amateurish to post this kid of crap regardless of our recent basketball history.

it felt so great not hearing them say "Oh just wait till basketball season!"
Mean anything for the team he'll have when it really counts. So I don't see this lasting. But while it's happening? Fuck Izzo. This is the guy who tried to beat us by 100 when we were down. I hope his head explodes at court side.

I hear you but MSU lived through John L Smith (!!!). It's logically inconsistent for us to make fun of them for obsessing over us, and then to post this

While I'm not denying Izzo gets his team into March every year with alarming consistency, the idea that he's been a March Madness god of some sorts seems overblown to me. While 2 Final Fours and a Championship Game appearance is nothing to sneeze it (we would've killed for that over the last 11 years), his teams have fallen short more often than not. That 2010 Final Four was especially lucky as they played the 12 seed, 4 seed (won on last second bucket), 9 seed, and 6 seed. New Mexico State, Maryland (hey!), Northern Iowa, and Tennessee isn't exactly a murderer's row.
Pundits were pushing the "overrated" label on Michigan despite them returning everyone but Novak and Douglas and bringing in 3 Top 100 recruits. State lost a guy who was literally their team in Draymond Green. They're a tournament team, but look for them to be more like one of those 6-10 seed teams that get bounced in the 1st round than the Magical Izzo Team of Destiny in 2010.
Any reason you stopped at 2002? Because going back the previous 4 years you would add an additional sweet 16 and 3 Final 4s.
Izzo's biggest accomplishment in March is winning the 2nd game of the weekend. He does have a few 1st round exits, but most of his exits are in the 1st game of the weekend (only 3 exits in the 2nd game of the weekend).
But the past week and a half have not been great at all for Sparty!

But.....every single year he has them in the tourney. Also, if he goes out the first round, the next year he follows it up with a deep tourney run - the exception is 2006 and 2007.
This MSU squad reminds me of an Amaker Michigan team. Questionable outside shooting. Talented big men who never put it together completely. Turnovers galore. Unlike an Amaker team, they'll probably be on the right side of the bubble since Appling/Harris/Dawson is a better backcourt than Horton/Harris/Abram, but they'll probably only finish 6th or 7th in the Big Ten.
I don't see how you got that from this particular game.
Questionable outside shooting: They were 6-14 from behind the arc (42.9%). Michigan hasn't shot that well since Game 2 (IUPUI)
Turnovers Galore: Not every team can be Michigan. In tonight's game, MSU had a season low 11 Turnovers. That's actually really good for them.
Talented big men who never put it together: You are on the money on this one.
MSU did not play well tonight but i doubt they finish 6th or 7th in the B1G. If there is one thing i've learnt about bball, it's that the success of a team's nonconference schedule DOES NOT directly translate into conference success. Of course a good team will win most of their games on both sides of the schedule but MSU has lost 7 out of their 13 ACCvsB1G games and still has had success.

I was commenting on their season performance to date. They are shooting 30% for 3pt range and have a horrendous 24% (!) turnover pct for the season. Even today's game they had a 20% turnover pct, which I guess is an improvement, but still bad.
I agree. Statistics-to-date paint a not-so-rosy outlook.

I will bump them up in my prediction though. They'll probably finish 5th or 6th. Wisconsin is not a tournament caliber team since they lost Dekker for the year.
I can't quite compare MSU's team to an Amaker team simply because Izzo is a MUCH better coach than Amaker. I so wanted to believe that Amaker could coach a Big 10 team when he arrived in Ann Arbor, but soon learned that he was a good recruiter who was still a very young coach that wasn't quite ready for prime-time.
Angry midget, use your gun, ball sack, kill zach kill. Do you know what stanley pringle did?
Really rooting for that meteor to hit Cameron Indoor right now...Dook v. the Bucknuts...
Rooting for the B1G? Or listening to Jay Bilas' crying if Dook loses?
They dont play defense. They just hack and hack, rolling in yet more mediocre players when the starting mediocre players get into foul trouble. Eventually the officials just fatigue from calling fouls and sparty winds up with the advantage. Against teams with a pulse that just isn't going to do 'er.

is garbage! Are you kidding me? Miami ain't a football OR a basketball school anymore. Back of the bus with them again.
see their team is weeeeeak lol
We hate Michigan State. We don't like Penn State too. We don't care for Minnesota, Wisconsin or Notre Dame but we all hate O-S-U.

Lol at them for now. Ask all of them and they'll say "the reason we're so much better than scUM is because of Tom Izzo'' Not recognizing Beilein's coaching ability is gonna bite them in the ass just like it did with Hoke. That's not to say Izzo isn't a great coach, but Beilein is going to give him a run for his money.
Also, have they not learned by now that msu never starts out well? They lost to Grand Valley State in an exibition not that long ago but still went to the sweet sixteen.
"Ohio is like a giant turd that Michigan just can't pinch off"
Yep, that was in 2007, the night before the comeback in Spartan Stadium.

he's owned recruiting in the state since after Michigan got in trouble (note: it's like Michigan has owned the state in football until recently; but re Izzo it's for worse reasons, bc msu football had no punishment in football to put it at a disadvantage). Michigan is back to recruiting at those same levels now, where making the first round is somewhat expected. Msu really needs to get Jabari Parker for 2013 or risk having zero players for 2013.
I love to watch college basketball and played in organized games into my 30s. It's an awesome game; and I've watched Michigan (and kept up with msu) since the mid 80s. I just don't think Izzo coaches a game that develops players very well individually over 4 years. He does coach well in tournament settings though.
I've said it in previous years too: I think Beilein is a better coach, but only time will tell.
His recruiting is also surpassing what Amaker did (which was very good in its own right) notwithstanding it being an issue raised by his early critics.

Anyone notice that their star, blue chip PG Harris can't shoot 3s? He at like 20-something % on the year. Meanwhile, over half of Michigan's team is shooting 30% or higher from 3-point land. lol
Every time an MGoBoard poster complains about a thread topic, God kills a baby panda.
so his %s will either go up, or the shooting mechanics taught at msu are subject to some scrutiny.
[edit: re Keith Appling PG]

Izzo is a good coach, obviously, but there are other good coaches as well. Much of his tourney success is attributed to his teams receiving artificially high seeding, which makes your first couple games againt cupcake opponents. Case-in-point: last year, Izzo's team was mediocore and tied Michigan and OSU for the conference title, yet his team gets a one-seed and hence a virtually guaranteed path to the S16, when all 3 teams probably should have been 2-seeds or lower. Then they went onto score the fewest points by a one-seed in tourney history in their elimination game. It's all bullshit. It isn't quite BCS-level bullshit, but its awfully close.

I wouldn't say that MSU was mediocre last season. As you say, they tied for the regular season crown and won the B1G Tournament, beating Wisconsin and OSU en route. IMO, that says they were a good team (but certainly not a great one).
I will agree with you, though, that they were overseeded as a #1.

Since I have been saying "Tom Izzo is overrated" since John Beilein actually made him start competing for recruits, and "Tom Izzo's team is garbage" since the Wonders Hall Cover-up, I really don't have anything to add.
Izzo has a way to bore other opponents to death. That team in my opinion is unwatchable.
1) This is exactly how Sparty acts when we lose at football. Our basketball team is legitimately more talented than theirs for the first time in 15 or so years so I know it's hard to act like we've been there before, but let's try.
2) As much as I hate Sparty when we play them, if there was ever a time to pull for them it was last night. Their ranking has no effect on us at this point given how high we are, but it does effect the overall perception and ratings of the conference. I would much rather win the conference championship of by far and away the best conference in college basketball than one that is comparable to another (even if the ACC is a damn good conference).
3) Just like we crack on Sparty for having a successful "little run" at football and now it is time for big brother to restore order, we should probably wait until we have a consistent run in basketball before boasting about our greatness. Izzo has taken very mediocre teams to the Final Four, we merely have a highly ranked talented team very early in the year.
Coffee is for closers. Let's get to at least one final four before boasting to Sparty. Makes us look very little brotherly.

but saying I'm not sad is an understatement too.

Cool your jets. It's all in good fun and no one on here is bashing on MSU personally like they do over at RCMB. Apparently you did not live through the decade of Michigan Men's Basketball where it was the equivalent of the Smashing Pumpkin's Melancholy and the Infinite Sadness on repeat. For once we are on top and no one is saying we will/will not lose to them this year, but it's just a good feeling.
Those who stayed loyal all those years and watched practically every game the last 12+ years (such as myself) deserve this.
