OT- the odd career of Tim Lincecum

Submitted by chomz14 on
A year after no hitting the Padres, dude does it again today. 4-5 years ago he was arguably the best pitcher in baseball. His stuff was unreal. But since then he has been anything but good. Even lost his job in the rotation for awhile there. But it looks like once in a while he still can deliver the magic. Glad for him.

The amusing aspect to this game is that Lincecum himself went 2-for-3 at the plate, so by himself he was on base more than the Padres. Great final line though - 6 Ks, 1 BB, 113 pitches to complete it out, 73 of which were strikes. Congratulations to him on a fantastic afternoon.

Supposedly, he immediately changed into a USA soccer uniform for photos, so many kudos for that as well.

The Padres are AWFUL.  They have the fewest runs scored of any team by 50 runs.  Getting a no-hitter vs. that team is just not that great.

He's the ultimate hot-cold guy; if he's feeling good that day he's lights-out, but if not you can tee off on him.  During his heyday he could slog through bad games without too much damage, but a bit like Verlander now he can't quite get to that level.  I still think Verlander is a better pitcher overall, but these power guys tend to struggle a bit when they lose the dominant stuff.

It also helps that he's pitching against SD, which feels like Triple-A right now.

I watched a little bit of this game. Timmy was lights out. Yeah I know the Padres suck but they're still pros.

Speaking of baseball, how about J.D. Martinez? He has been absolutely tearing the cover off of the ball.

At the end of 7, Tigers still leading 7-5.  They were up in the 4th leading 5-0 and nearly broke the game wide open, but Miggy lined out into a quick double play.  Texas then scored 3 in the bottom of the 4th, with the Tigers helping with some shakey defense.

In the 5th, Detroit got back-to-back HR's from V-Mart and J-Mart (J.D. Martinez to stretch the lead back to 4, 7-3.   This game just has the feel of one where the Tigers just need to keep scoring or else.

but ran themselves out of a potentially much bigger inning.  I dunno what Tiger 3rd-base coach Clark was doing, but it appeared he gave Bryan Holaday the green light to try scoring from 1st on an off-the-wall double to left-center by Suarez that did plate Donkey.   Holaday was out by at least 30 feet, maybe more.  It was so bad that the Ranger catcher could have had time to pour himself a beer while waiting with the ball for Holaday to reach the plate.

Jaba in to pitch in the 8th...

6 straight wins!  Sanchez started out well, but struggled from the 4th on and only went 5 1/3, getting the "W".  The Tigers are still too shaky in the bullpen, but as long as they can ride the hot bats in their order right now, the wins suddenly seem to come much easier. Detroit needs a lot more wins, though, just to erase the stench of that 9-20 streak from mid-May thru mid June.

Nathan had his moments in the 9th, giving up a run before finally sealing the victory.  Chamberlain's strong 8th kept the Rangers dowm by 3 to give Nathan just enough breathing room to survive.

7 straight wins after that awful, awful 9-20 stretch.  And the 2nd straight road sweep.  Tigers seem so much better on the road this season than at home, which is just the opposite of the way they've been for several seasons.

Porcello's half-way to 20 wins, now at 10-4 for the season.  A beautiful 3-hitter and a complete game, he hasn't given up a run in the last 2 starts, spanning 16+ innings, I believe.  Just the 2nd complete game of Porcello's career, he didn't reach his 100th pitch until the 9th.

I'm very, very glad the Tigers have stayed with Porcello, when so many have called for him to be traded over the last few seasons.  I've always felt he's been an underrated starter, just needing a competent infield behind him to become an annual 16-18 game winner.
