This is why I hate ESPN.
August 20th, 2009 at 10:03 PM ^
I fail to see what ESPN has to do with it, as Hard Knocks is on HBO. Also, I like that they gave him a chance to do it. It's the pre-season and they're letting him have some fun. No harm, no foul.
August 20th, 2009 at 10:07 PM ^
I've never watched Hard Knocks so I won't comment on the show but when this is on the front page of ESPN's NFL page, I think I'm justified in saying I hate ESPN. This is not news.
August 20th, 2009 at 10:35 PM ^
CNNSI too, and I'm sure every other NFL site too. Unfortunately, this is "news".
August 21st, 2009 at 12:04 AM ^
Pennant races drag, and preseason games feature assessments of bench players.
In 15 days there will be real news.
As to the coach actually letting him do it, I don't see why Marvin Lewis would want to encourage OchoCinco.
August 20th, 2009 at 11:38 PM ^
I'll take this over Brett Favre.
August 20th, 2009 at 10:39 PM ^
What the hell does this have to do with ESPN?
Its preseason dude. No one gives a shit about what happens in the preseason. If he wants to kick a meaningless PAT, let him. The Bengals franchised their kicked anyways, so its not like there's any competition at the position.
Come down off your high horse there hoss.
August 20th, 2009 at 10:10 PM ^
It would have been hilarious if Ochocinco would have pulled a Gramatica after making his PAT. You know other then the fact that it is an individual getting seriously (in a professional sense) injured.
August 20th, 2009 at 10:11 PM ^
He also kicked the ball off to start the second half.
August 20th, 2009 at 10:14 PM ^
More attention for Mr. Ochocinco... maybe he'll celebrate his PAT by changing his name to "Chad Uno."
August 20th, 2009 at 10:14 PM ^
The Bengals regular kicker is out with an injury. Apparently OchoCinco has played some soccer and has practiced kicking before why not let him give it a try?
August 20th, 2009 at 10:21 PM ^
So the Bengals are the last team in the XFL? Stupid publicity stunts don't belong in the NFL. Maybe I'm just a traditionalist...
EDIT: And as far as their regular kicker being out.... there are 50 free agent kickers that would of flown into town for the game, let alone a punter who could probably do the job. Letting your #1 WR and face of the franchise kick is, without question, a publicity stunt and/or giving into Ochocinco insisting on having his publicity stunt
August 20th, 2009 at 10:33 PM ^
Preseason games mean less than nothing.
Chad Ochocinco is a great player and a silly guy. There is no harm in this. And even if there was potential harm, he made the extra point. So, nothing.
I'll bet you were also pissed off when Doug Flutie drop kicked an extra point two years back.
August 20th, 2009 at 10:40 PM ^
Pissed? No
Annoyed? Yes
And really, I think a lot of what Ochocinco does (including the name change) is either considered "entertaining" by some (you probably fall into this camp) and "annoying" by others (I fall into this camp).
the media gets people to read anything related to him because whether you think he's entertaining or annoying... you read it.
They have us all by the balls... and I find this extra-annoying
August 20th, 2009 at 10:51 PM ^
The guy sometimes has a mohawk. He fake proposes to cheerleaders. He does Riverdance. He changed his last name to an incorrect enunciation of Spanish (his last name is eight-five, not eighty-five). He works his ASS off. And, he's an incredibly productive receiver with sublime talent.
Given what COULD be reported on right now (The Favre crap, Vick's return, Plaxico in jail, Aqib Talib beating up a cabbie), well, OchoCinco kicking an extra point is silly, a nice 30-second distraction from the regular police blotter or lies we get reported to us.
If it bothers you, I recommend you utilize your remote. This is really not that big a deal. GO BLUE jtmc.
August 20th, 2009 at 10:56 PM ^
hell yes
i actually enjoyed it
August 20th, 2009 at 10:58 PM ^
A big deal? No
Still annoying? Yes
And Go Blue jg2112.... and F the Gophers!
August 20th, 2009 at 11:01 PM ^
I'll be sure to report back from the first scrimmage at TCF Stadium this Saturday. Maybe I'll steal Goldy's head.
August 20th, 2009 at 10:59 PM ^
I think the intention is for it to read 8-5...I'm just saying!
August 20th, 2009 at 11:14 PM ^
So you're saying the Bengals should spend thousands of dollars to fly a kicker out the game and pay him to make a meaningless extra point in a game that has absolutely no implications on the season? In this economy, I don't blame the Bengals for letting him try.
Personally, if I was head coach of an NFL team, I would run two-point conversions galore during the preseason... Then again, there's a reason why I'm not an NFL coach =P
August 21st, 2009 at 12:22 AM ^
Mike Brown is not some billionaire with deep pockets. He makes his money from the Bengals. I sincerely doubt he has the cash to waste on a kicker for a meaningless game in this economy when season ticket renewals are probably in the shitter.
August 20th, 2009 at 10:51 PM ^
Who cares?
I think it's really funny... Shayne Graham is hurt, and Chaddy boy obviously has a pretty good leg (kicked it down to the 15 ish yard line on the kickoff)...
Would you have rather seen Carson Palmer or Chris Henry kick it?????
August 20th, 2009 at 11:09 PM ^
That was a fine extra point, and the KO went to the 8 yard line. A fine job by ChadOC.
And his halftime tweets were hilarious. "I think Ronaldinho would be proud of me...."
August 21st, 2009 at 12:24 AM ^
I loved it. I hate to quote Dan Lebatard, but it really is the no fun league 90% of the time... things like this help.
August 21st, 2009 at 12:47 AM ^
I found this really funny, I mean its the pre-season let the guys have some fun.
August 21st, 2009 at 1:31 AM ^
seriously. the rest of the year the NFL is all business (which is why I'm only entertained by Fantasy Football anymore since the Lions blow hard...) let the dude have some fun. Its better than being a jackass and doing stupid celebrations.
(for the record, I'm not annoyed by the celebrations, I just prefer a more emotional celebration as it seems like its actually coming from the love of the game. The celebrations he pulls of have nothing to do with that IMHE.)
August 21st, 2009 at 5:22 AM ^
He's got a bit of a boot on him. Nice to see some fun in the league, football gets taken a little too seriously sometimes, and people need to remember its a game, its supposed to be fun.
August 21st, 2009 at 7:28 AM ^
Breaking news: Chad Johnson is still an insatiable attention whore.
August 21st, 2009 at 9:05 AM ^
First off, he legally changed his name. It isn't some joke or "request" now. He signs his checks "Ochocinco". Call him by it instead of refusing to acknowledge it.
Second of all, so what? He gets his attention by having fun in the game. Better than getting it by flashing a gun or running from the cops.
Is he my favorite player? No. But dammit if you can't do WAYYYYYYY worse in the NFL.
August 21st, 2009 at 10:32 AM ^
And neither is the "no twittering on the sidelines" thing some kind of "request" by the NFL, but he appears to be doing it anyway. He's been fined numerous times for ignoring not-requests by the NFL, including, significantly, a not-request to wear the correct nameplate on the back of his jersey.
If he doesn't have to respect what he's told to do by others, I feel absolutely no obligation to respect what he tells me I should do. Chad Johnson it is.
Second, he gets his attention by "having fun"....and his idea of fun is showing up the opposition. If the best you can say is "well at least he's not shooting a gun or running from the cops", which frankly makes him better than a whopping 2% of the NFL, that's not much of a defense in his favor.
I think he's an asshole, frankly. And since I'm not filing a legal brief here or writing a contract, I can call him what I like, whether it's Ochocinco, Chad Johnson, or Cockberry Bunghole Fartfaceingston the III.
August 21st, 2009 at 11:06 AM ^
You take life way too seriously.
August 21st, 2009 at 1:23 PM ^
Right, because I'm the one running around telling people, "No. You must use his legal name."
August 21st, 2009 at 12:53 PM ^
He didn't tweet on the sidelines, for one, he did it at halftime. Jesus, at least know what you're talking about.
