OT - O-zone tweet claims Hoke ripped on Urban Meyer at Detroit Athletic Club

Submitted by kehnonymous on

Because I hate myself to the point of masochism and don't always have bamboo shivs to ram under my fingernails, I sometimes listen to 97.1 The Fan in Columbus. The evening host, Adam Neft, was talking about a tweet from the O-zone beat writer. In it, the O-zone guy claims that Brady Hoke brought up Urban's arrest record, as a response to the now infamous snackademic sign at the Woody Hayes Center.

The contents of the relevant tweets:

I did not hear this directly, but it came from someone on our board who was in attendance this morning.
That was Hoke speaking at the Detroit Athletic Club this morning when asked about Ohio State's poster comparing college majors to UM
Brady Hoke on Meyer: "We dont recruit negatively, I'm not going to mention 30 felonies in 5 years that happened in his previous program."

So, this is all secondhand at best. It doesn't sound like something Hoke would say out loud to the media, but who knows. It'll be interesting to see if it's true and if this bit makes the rounds in Columbus, where they still think - let's see if I can quote them directly on this - Jabbe the cHoke negatively recruited kyle kACLis to scUM /rabblerabblecoolerpoopers

Its amusing, to say the least, to pass the buck to the DC.  Cause we all know that DC's are the final arbiters of team discipline.  Might as well pass the other blame to the OC, so that none of it can lie with the HC.

And what sorry assed attempt to try to throw the man under the bus that not only helped coach his team to one of his MNC's, he was also an intergral part of Tebow's recruitment. No surprise here, it's just another glowing example his lack of integrity,  and another cheesy attempt to pander to his fanbase. He and Ohio deserve each other. Cooper 2.0 anyone?

Amidst all of your running pronouns, I gather that you think that Meyer was claiming that most of the Florida arrests were occurring on Mattison's side of the ball, as it were.  Have I got that right?  Is that what you mean when you wrote:

"...it's just another glowing example his lack of integrity, and another cheesy attempt to pander to his fanbase. He and Ohio deserve each other."

So you are saying that Meyer's lack of integrity is shown by his throwing Mattison under the bus?  I don't get it.  Has Meyer ever once commented on 1) the Hayes Center "undergraduate major" sign; 2) Hoke's (erroneous? transcript needed) comment about Florida felonies or 3) Greg Mattison's responsibility for any lack of control at Florida?

As far as I know, Meyer hasn't commented about any of those things.  At least not at this time.

If I remember correctly I think that was a personal question and wasn't a public question. I read earlier that someone was 1 on 1 with him(a fan) and that was his response, and that it wasn't an answer to the media. I could be wrong though.

It's just made up. They are trying to get clicks, calls, whatever. Expect more of this. Brady Hoke is a hard guy to hate or even dislike, people have to just make things up to villify him.

I guaruntee they were criticizing the shit out of Urban while he was at florida. Now he comes up here and it's HOKE IS A FAT MORAN AHHHH HE HAS DONE NOTHING IN COLLEGE FOOTBALL URBAN'S GONNA STOMP HIM!!!!!1!

At the end of the day, the only thing that matters is which team wins that game.  We can spend the next 9 months with the fat jokes or the "snake oil douchebag" comments or the "morally corrupt individual" comments- but it's the winning that counts.

Probably not the best thing Hoke ever said, but the truth hurts sometimes. At least it's more valid a criticism than "Hey Michigan, your school sucks academically".

This is hard; because we don't have an actual transcript of Hoke.  But if Hoke suggested "30 felonies" at Florida, that is not just wrong, that's crazy-stupid-Rosenberg-exaggeration-wrong.  30 felonies?  Srsly?

And here's another thought-experiment.  Suppose Rich Rodriguez had said something like this (he never did; Rodriguez and Tressel were apparently consummate gentlemen and collegial in dealing with each other); how long do you suppose it woujld have been before the Freep started running stories about Rodriguez's widly wrong misstatement of fact?

Of course you have to comment about Rodriguez and the Free Press. Obviously.

What difference does it make what the Free Press might have said about Rodriguez if he'd said something similar? What is the point of your thought experiment?

By the way, shouldn't you be reading the Tuscon Daily Cactus looking for negative references to Rodriguez?

Whether Mark Snyder or Shawn Windsor or another staffer does anything with the Hoke-at-the-DAC story.  I'd have doubted it, unless they had a reporter there, because they'd have to confirm the quote through at least two sources, etc.

Then again, as we all know the Free Press virtually lives off of Michigan football.  Nothing sells page-hits like 'Michigan football controversy.'

Whether they touch the story might depend on whether they think the Brady Hoke honeymoon is over.  Because from a journalist's standpoint, the real story is that Hoke grossly misstated the Florida record (oh, and Mattison was there at the time).  So I kind of doubt that the Free Press is going to call Hoke out on that subject; they are still trying to get themselves back in good graces with with Michigan Athletic Department.

"30 felonies" is what the guy at Ozone who heard it from a guy who heard it from a guy said.

Here's a quote from someone at the event:

'Someone asked if he saw the recruiting tactics that Urban implemented regarding the college majors for the players at each university, and he responded "we dont recruit negatively, I'm not going to mention the 30 arrests and some felonies in 5 years that happened at Florida."'

That's an interesting comment coming from you.

After posting the original story, the OP on 247 has since admitted to "paraphrasing" and even misquoting Hoke's comments. He has retracted and revised "30 felonies" four times now.

Yet you press on under the falsehood that the OP's original post was a direct quote. "From a journalist's standpoint, the real story is that Hoke grossly misstated the Florida record."

Fascinating. And wrong. Because he didn't.

It almost sounds like you're intentionally trying to pillory the Michigan head football coach behind a phony guise of journalism.

It reminds me of something. I can't quite put my finger on it.

To conclude, in your own words: I don't understand why assclowns like you still post gibberish like this. Don't reply; I am not wasting my time on you.

I was afraid that I may be encountering some critical examination from "Cornelius Buttcheeks."

Dear Mr. Buttcheeks,

In my own defense I'd just like to point out that I think i have been about 1000% more careful in my choice of words and more circumspect than the other fanboyz in this thread.

With the greatest respect and all due deference, I remain your humble servant,

.....its true he was on Urbans staff, but lets give Mattison a few years at Michigan and see how many arrests accumulate under this staff in Ann Arbor.  I think we will soon find out this is a Urban problem and not a Mattison problem.

and there are no more and no fewer arrests, convictions, indictments, etc. at Ohio State than at Michigan?  Do you then acknowledge that it was something other than Meyer?  A "Florida problem"?  An "SEC problem"?  A "southern problem"?

We're debating academics between ohio and UM? Yeah, I'll take that debate any day--and I'll compare a UM GS degree with anything ohio has. This is a fight Urban never should have started.

Now Hoke has apparently moved the debate to one of character and institutional control. We can have that debate too.

If I'm a recruit, it probably doesn't help to see a foodfight between the two universities--ends up lowering my estimation of both of them. But really, how many recruits are going to decide based on this? Very few that we would want, I'm thinking. I don't think it's probably the most prudent comment Hoke ever made, but it was in a relatively private atmosphere, and if this is the worst thing he ever says, I'm a happy fan.

F*ck Urban, f*ck OSU and f*ck 97.1 the fan. The mid-day guys and the evening guys are the worst. Seriously, they should be embarrassed by how little they actually know. When Bruce Hooley was the best thing you had going for you then you know your station sucks. And poor old Bruce got run out of town for calling it like it was when St. Tress was messing up.
