OT: NSFW (put on your headphones) - Woman goes off on Airline Personnel and Air Marshals

Submitted by boliver46 on

Recently have seen quite a few well-publicized rants that have gone viral (e.g. Dunkin' Donuts lady - Detroit).

Came across this story where a woman was kicked off a plane for refusing to turn off her cell phone.  Air Marshals soon got involved and the woman was dragged off the plane in front of her son.

Interesting to me is (1) the sense of entitlement people seem to have thinking they can do whatever they want, and (2) the prevalence of social media and public shaming associated with the results of (1) above.

Anyone have any PERSONAL experiences with someone going off like this?

Lots of cursing, hence the NSFW in Title - otherwise it's ok.

Didn't an entire church group or something get kicked off a plane for the same thing a while ago and claim they were religiously persecuted? I would definitely agree with your point 1.

This woman is clearly trying to set herself up to sue the airlines, whatever organization (TSA?) handles the Air Marshals and whatever police department eventually detained her. I bet she called some garbage lawyer they minute she was released. I hope she loses everything, including her son who she clearly cares little about.

her off that plane.  Trying to reason with someone that is irrational and out of control doesn't work.  Meanwhile, all the other passengers including kids had to listen to and watch that crap. I'm so grateful I've never been on a flight with a nut-job like that.

I'm sure there were and still are potential technology issues. But I would propose what started as a rule due to technology issues has evolved into a rule due to social issues. Anyone who travels on a regular basis knows the use of cell phones on planes will turn into a "this is why we can't have nice things" issue. I personally do not want to listen to the person sitting next to me have a long and probably loud phone conversation while I am stuck in my seat as I fly. If you think people are testy now, wait until unlimited cell phone use becomes standard. Draconian laws may bristle the younger generation, but if it maintains some sense of public decorum, that's fine with me.

This stuff when it happens to me at work is funny, drunk pax, screaming people mad because of delays or what have you I mean people take for flying as a right and not a privledge its kinda funny that you wanna argue with the people who you trust your lifes to. Yet you dont wanna listen to me when I'm like yo just turn it off. You can turn it right back on when we reach 10,000 feet. But when that compressor blows on takeoff and the engine erupts we need you paying attention to whats going on not tweeting. I have only had to remove two pax in my entire short airline career but it was funny. Passengers do some really odd things on flights and its usually the ones who don't fly very often. If the captain says you gotta get off the plane and you don't comply you just broke a federal law and its a felony.

Hi, I'm not a EE or ME or Aero E grad, so I'll defer to those here who seem to know the technical side.

I do believe (and I'm sure someone here who has stronger evidence will correct me) that take offs and landings are the times where unfortunate events can happen that do require everybody's attention. A power failure during take off or a run way over shoot or sliding off of the tarmac, etc. So having everyone just disconnect from the virtual world and focus for a few minutes on the real world during the time when they need to have their ears and eyes open seems reasonable.

Do you REALLY think that if having an electronic device on during takeoff or landing was going to cause the plane to crash that the current system of just telling people to turn their stuff off and then trusting them that it is off would be fine?  Really?

People leave electronic devices on during takeoff and landing all the time.  You just aren't aware of it.   As other people have mentioned about the ONLY devices that could ever possibly cause any problems would be those that can transmit a signal, such as a cellphone.  And as far as I know, no one as of yet has ever proven that using a cell phone during take off or landing can bring down a commercial jet.

That being said, I'd still be fine with a ban on transmitting electroncs during takeoffs and landings.  But bans on things like MP3 players are just ridiculous.  Your iPod is never going to have any effect on a jet plane.

Most of this stems from an unexplained incident back in the 1980's that the FAA was never able to explain.  The pilots instruments went all haywire and they never figured out why.  So they blamed it on someone on the flight having some electrical device and decided they had to ban everything before someone crashed.  Of course, they never figured out what device it was because it probably wasn't a passenger's device at all.  But they didn't find another cause so they stuck with that story for years.  That's where the electonics ban originated.  It should have been lifted a long time ago, at least for devices that don't transmit signals.

Oh, and just FYI, yes I am an Electrical Engineer, though I won't claim to be an expect in EMF.  My dad is though and this had been a pet peeve of his for years.

Sit your self entitled asses in a car and drive, you can tell yourself/or not to turn on/ or off anything you want/ or don't. Since, many if you are "torn" or affronted about not having access to your phones for 10 min. It is obvious that you are some very important people. Given that, just tell your chauefer to not tell you to turn your shit off. Or Buy your plane ticket, follow the rules and shut the fuck up so all the average Joe's can get from A to B on time. Though, I will qualify the above with the fact that she may very well have been engaged in something crucially important---like calling out others' grammar or bragging about how much you know about a 16 year old from Virginia body type and upside. BTW, rules are always established, modified or changed before the game and Never during the game(this could lead to obnoxious delays). Follow the rules or don't fucking play.

I really don't get why people think that the point of the policy is somehow relevant. As if launching a profanity-laden tirade in front of small children (including your own son), insulting fellow passengers, and fighting with the police is somehow justified because you're objecting to an annoying but ultimately benign policy.
