OT, as in not even remotely relevant: Favorite old-school video games

Submitted by Tim Waymen on
In honor of Rick Snyder's campaign for Governor and Protector of Michigan against the evil robot uprising, I will bring out my inner nerd. What are your favorite old-school video games? Obviously, it's very tough to set any parameters for what is old school, but it probably doesn't include GTA 4. I recently found what is possibly the most awesome website ever: Virtual NES. Tons of NES games you can play through Flash (?). As a kid, I had and loved NES and SNES. Of course, it goes without saying that Mario 1-3 and Zelda are amazing. Mario 3 and Zelda are definitely among my all-time favorites. When I got SNES, I had Mario World (I got sick of it once I got 96%) and Mario All-Stars. I loved Castlevania games whenever I rented them, and I bought Symphony of Night on the PSN Store a while back. I remember enjoying Castlevania 2, but this guy reminded me of how frustrating it really was. Other huge favorites of mine, however, were Mega Man 2-4 + X, TMNT 2-4, and Battletoads, even though I could never make it past the pipe level because holy shit that game was difficult (considered by some to be the hardest of all time). I recently found the original Mega Man and Mega Man X collections for PS2 on ebay, so that's exciting. Paper Boy was also great. What are your favorites?

Super Tecmo Bowl (God I used to put Sterling Sharpe at RB and throw to him) Super Mario Bros. (Collecting coins was cool) Mike Tyson's Punchout (Come to think of it-Mr. Sandman looks like Glenn Winston) Ten-Yard Fight (You know how to escape an alligator and a defender+zig zag) Pac-Man on the Atari (ENOUGH SAID) Ghostbusters on the Commodore 64 Super Sunday on the Apple IIc MicroLeague Bseball on the Apple IIc (This was my fav. game ever) HONORABLE MENTION: Double Dribble Blades of Steel Baseball Stars BurgerTime (Intellivision) Ikari Warriors

Tecmo Super Bowl. No doubt my favorite NES game and even favorite game of all time. Most underrated team on the game: The Bengals. They had an amazing defense and a semi-mobile Boomer made for an unstoppable rushing attack. Most overrated team: The Giants. Sure, you had LT, but they had a terrible playbook to work with (assuming you're playing 2-player and don't change the playbook)...and Megget was sure to get hurt if you were playing a season. Also, Dr. Mario is fantastic if you play 2-player.

I still have calluses on my thumbs from that game. Thanks to movies like War Games and Tron, I was fascinated with AI in the 80's. I would imagine that the computer had to be pretty fucking livid with the routine beat down that I would put on it, even on the hardest level. My only beef is that you had to pick between Chicago, Boston, LA, and New York. Even though they all had fictional mascots, their colors were similar to the NBA franchises and, being a hard core Pistons fan, I hated all of the choices.

I was a computer kid growing up, none of that fancy console junk. The Wing Commander series (1 through 3) was great, as was the Monkey Island series (1 through 2).

Tecmo Super Bowl. /thread Seriously - that game was so far ahead of its time. Other favorites from way back when: both NES Zeldas, obviously, as well as all three Marios (Mario 2 is still the only one I've ever beaten without Game Genie.) The first Final Fantasy was also pretty sweet. Bases Loaded 2 - definitely the best of the series. Blades of Steel, in which winning the fight kept you out of the penalty box - now that's hockey. My brother and I used to just spend three periods fighting. Or if you want to go even old-schooler, Combat for the Atari was a great one. Had like 88 different possible games, each ever so slightly different from the other.

The key to that one was to have the Nintendo Power special issue devoted to the game, which revealed the answers to all the boards on the matching game (the one with the playing card that moved around). I'd use that to load up on items which would carry me through to the finish.

My friend Matt Moses had Battletoads for his NES. That was the first game system I had any experience with. Awesome. I subsequently got an SNES and a PC. My favorite old school games: Contra III (played this for HOURS and HOURS and HOURS) Mario Paint fly swatting game (annoying, KILL THE BUGS!) On the PC, two spring to mind: The original GTA (Though I probably spent more time creating my own vehicle sprites with GTA cars than anything else) Pipe Dreams (Yes, Pipe dreams, on the windows games disk. You don't like it, too bad!)

Your friend turned you on to Battletoads, and you remained friends? You had to be doing 1-player then. It's impossible to do 2-player with someone and remain on friendly terms. My sister and I would get into huge fights because we would keep attacking each other by accident, even sometimes throwing the other into a pit, still completely by accident. To this day, I have no idea how anyone can make it past the 3rd level (hover bikes) in 2-player mode. It just can't be possible.

Super Mario World Super Mario Kart Legend of Zelda - A Link to the Past Those three made up a huge part of my childhood, and I would probably still say that Link to the Past is my favorite video game ever (along w/ the decidedly-not-old-school Half-Life 2).

NES- ExcitaBike I think it was called, supercross game that allowed you to create you're own course. Way ahead of it's time. When SEGA came out it was all about Dieon Sanders Prime Time Football.
