OT, as in not even remotely relevant: Favorite old-school video games

Submitted by Tim Waymen on
In honor of Rick Snyder's campaign for Governor and Protector of Michigan against the evil robot uprising, I will bring out my inner nerd. What are your favorite old-school video games? Obviously, it's very tough to set any parameters for what is old school, but it probably doesn't include GTA 4. I recently found what is possibly the most awesome website ever: Virtual NES. Tons of NES games you can play through Flash (?). As a kid, I had and loved NES and SNES. Of course, it goes without saying that Mario 1-3 and Zelda are amazing. Mario 3 and Zelda are definitely among my all-time favorites. When I got SNES, I had Mario World (I got sick of it once I got 96%) and Mario All-Stars. I loved Castlevania games whenever I rented them, and I bought Symphony of Night on the PSN Store a while back. I remember enjoying Castlevania 2, but this guy reminded me of how frustrating it really was. Other huge favorites of mine, however, were Mega Man 2-4 + X, TMNT 2-4, and Battletoads, even though I could never make it past the pipe level because holy shit that game was difficult (considered by some to be the hardest of all time). I recently found the original Mega Man and Mega Man X collections for PS2 on ebay, so that's exciting. Paper Boy was also great. What are your favorites?

Wolfenstein, Doom, and other early 3D games made me dizzy. I loved Duke Nukem 3D though, and that came out a bit later. Maybe it had something to do with me being older and/or better technology? I had shareware versions of the original 1st two Duke Nukem games and the 2nd one was a lot of fun. Duke Nukem 3D was hilarious: "Your face, your ass--what's the difference?" "No time to play with myself!" hit enter on pinball machine "Ahhhhhh...much better!" at the toilet "This is KTIT, playing the breast...er, best tunes in town!"

Sega Genesis: NHLPA 93 - I know some people have talked about NHL94 already, but I had 93... Jeremy Roenick was absolutely unstoppable, amazing game. N64: Goldeneye - First person shooter, multiplayer... we used to just have sleepovers and play this all night. its all about the proximity mines in the complex

Mortal Kombat Pokemon (don't say you didn't play it because you did) And seriously the FF series? Metroid Metal Gear Duck Hunt! Track and Field (with that running pad thing) Pac-Man Super Mario Kart Star Fox!!! (I almost forgot about that that game was sweet) Tetris Dr. Mario (like Tetris but with pills)

Perhaps the gayest game ever made. And I'm not saying it in a derogatory sense. It really was homoerotic in all those film scenes between play. You just couldn't believe all the double entendre's they were getting away with- it was hilarious!

NHL 93 was amazing. Bure and Selane were fun to play with but I loved getting into fights with Domi and Probert. Oh the memories.

I still have: Deus Ex Star Wars: Rebellion Sim City 2000 Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri Star Wars: Rogue Squadron Hearts of Iron 2 all installed and working on my primary gaming computer. I remember years ago getting Rebellion and being crushed because I needed 8 MB of RAM to run it, and my computer only had 6. It was like the world ended for me. Now I still have that game and its running on a machine with 12 GB of RAM. Console Love to: Super Mario Kart Goldeneye

I didn't get a Game Boy until maybe a year before it was replaced by GB Color, and the only game I got was DK Land. I had played my friend's MM 1 for GB before, but otherwise my knowledge of the GB Mega Man games is limited outside of the fact that they have 4 bosses from the previous NES game and 4 bosses from the current NES game. So I recently played MM3 on Virtual GB and I have to say that I was quite impressed. The scale of the picture is much smaller (obviously), but it's a very fun game that is overlooked in the MM series, for understandable reasons with it being on GB. I like how it used the original NES music (which was amazing and ahead of its time) yet also had new stage setups. Plus I like the thing with the Mega Man hunters.

Baseball Stars for NES was the best baseball game around for close to 20 years. Also need to mention Mario Kart for SNES. None of these youngsters talking about old school Mario Kart and meaning N-64.

I am the WORST Toejam and Earl partner ever. Only play it co-op, and whenever my buddy gets on the screen I open the rocket skates to send him down about 4 levels. One of the few activities I enjoy just as much at 23 years old as I did at 10.

Just a couple more GREAT ones that haven't been mentioned: Bonanza Brothers (Genesis) TMNT: Turtles in Time (SNES) And one more vote for all the Monkey Island games - that's the second biggest monkey head I've ever seen.

That's one game I wish I could have again. They sell it on the PSN store, but it's this "re-shelled" version by Ubisoft (not Konami). It has different gameplay and doesn't include levels from the SNES version that weren't on the arcade version. It's supposed to be vastly inferior to the original.

Nothing like the super spiral throw from Sam. Plus you got to defeat the evil Russians. USA! USA! Can't believe no one as mentioned this. Loved Tecmo Bowl and Tecmo Super Bowl, Battletoads was awesome. Most impossible game: Blaster Master. All my mgopoints to anyone who beat this game without cheats. Has anyone here? I have never met someone who has. I got to the last guy once. At least I think it was the last boss. Damn that radioactive frog!!

Sega: Aladdin - I don't think I ever actually beat the game. As soon as I would get to a part I didn't like I would just Pause+ AABBAABBA to the end of the game. NFL 95 - I would either run back every kick with Mel Gray or give it to Barry on the next play and just run circles around the D. NHL 94? 95? - Watching the goalie bang the post after a goal was the greatest feeling when I scored but I would get so pissed when a friend would let that little video play and rub it in my face after he scored. SNES: TMNT - No more needs to me said.
