OT - Northern Lights Tonight
Mates,
With an electro-magnetic storm hitting the earth today, and our fair state under nearly perfectly clear skies and no moonrise until ~ 0630 hrs tomorrow, the conditions are perfect to see the northern lights tonight. They should be visible downstate, and they are firing up here in the northern lower. If you've never seen them they are pretty cool. And sometimes they are even maize and blue colored, which confirms God loves Michigan....

how "real" would you consider Google images?

You can't be serious.

His name is Trolling. I'm conflicted as to whether or not he really picked up on the joke.
Hmmm... the moon isn't up yet and it most certainly isn't that bright / full.

I had thought we were under nuclear attack. This is something completely different.

We always know God loves Michigan. The sun is maize and the sky is blue.

Pinckney, fall of 1991... they were red and green. First and only time I have seen them.
Haha, Spads, don't hear many people say that anymore.
How many pinckney people on here?
I went to Pinckney for my senior year only. I went to Plymouth-Canton for the balance of high school.
I was driving back from A2 to my mom's place ... I think I was on Dexter Road and saw all kinds of crazy lights in the sky... like I said, lots of red colors as well. It didn't look like curtains in the distance (like the picture posted elsewhere in this thread) rather like you were underneath the curtains or the aurora was on edge to the observer. It was after midnight and on a moonless night.
That was a solar max year as well.
I call your "Spads" and raise you a "Mugg and Bopps"!
Ahhhh - Haha.
Mugg & Bopps is actually still there.
However Spads is now the Pinckney Pub.

It's a St. Paddy's Day Miracle!
On that subject, my cool story bro, I took a red eye to Portland about eight years ago (it was actually the 3rd week in March, now that I think about it) and I had a window seat on the righthand side of the plane. I look out and see the northern lights from a view at 35,000 feet. The captain comes over the PA, wakes everyone up and tells us all to look at it, as they are the brightest he had ever seen in 20 years of flying. It was pretty amazing.

That actually is a cool story, bro.

I mean, technically I suppose it's not a true "redeye" but when your flight leaves at like 10pm it certainly feels like one when your body thinks it's after 3am when you arrive.

The electromagnetic storm arrived way earlier than expected.....makes one a bit uneasy considering that coronal mass ejections can take out our power grid.
Here's some more info and some amazing aurora footage.

Yes, and it is entirely a possibility

as far south as iowa and california. so again, if you are away from light pollution, you have a decent shot of seeing them in ann arbor. and if you don't see them now, but are an early riser like i am, you have a good chance to see them at 0-dark-hundred too.

...of what overexposure to the Northern Lights can do to your XtraMelanin!
This has been a public service message. And now, back to your regular programming...
checked skin this a.m., no changes. checked northern lights a few minutes ago, still visible, albeit weaker than last night.

I read that they might be visible here in New Hampshire, so I ventured outside to take a look. It's around 20 degrees right now and the wind is HOWLING so I only lasted a couple of minutes and didn't see anything. (Stars look good tonight though!) Best wishes to those of you who have better luck--I've heard the northern lights can be an amazing sight.

of the UP and northern Ontario. Very cool, but also a bit unsettling when you're miles from any type of civilization.

Is Metro Detroit too smoggy an area to see them? I looked briefly tonight but didn't see anything.
Grand Forks, ND, here. We had too much cloud coverage. I haz sad. This would have been my first time seeing them.
I've seen them several times. I once saw them driving home from Traverse City going eastbound on M-10. They were spectacular. As it was the middle of the night there wasn't much traffic, but what there was was drifting all over the highway at about 45 MPH. Everyone was watching the show to their right.
nice photo and thanks for sharing.
is a pretty good strain of weed.
Just sayin.
