OT: Nike rebrands Army as "Army West Point"

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

This happened about a month ago.

NIKE has rebranded ARMY as "Army West Point".

Here's their new logo-

Navy cracked some jokes about it-

To recap, this is what Army is going by: Army West Point Black Knights Cadets The Corps

Like the new uniforms though. I've always liked Army's look.

Nah, saying Michigan is like saying West Point. The campus is West Point, I live like 45 minutes from it, only decent college football around. When talking strictly about the team, it's "Army won by 13" but you'd say "I went to West Point last night, caught a game". So i don;t know what this is. Granted anyone that follows the program never calls them the "Cadets" or "Black Knights'' it's always just Army. So I guess people won't be saying "Army West Point beat Navy," or something. I don't think this makes much sense.

Said it before, will say it again...all shoe companies produce GARBAGE.
The only thing that matters is retaining (and utilizing) a veto power over the products.

A sword through the head is not good, but to be fair, at least they didn't do what this store did to sell syrup (just to illustrate how badly you can in fact miss)...

The USMA Superintendent (basically the university president) has a history of making asinine changes to things at the Academy, and he spearheaded this re-branding. The process supposedly lasted a couple years and cost almost $2 million, all to come up with a confusing new name and a logo that is basically just a carbon copy of the insignia that senior USMA cadets wear on their uniform.  The backlash from West Point alums has been very harsh so far, and I wouldn't expect this new brand to last very long.

of marketing douchebaggery I've seen in a long time.

I swear, if you ever are in dire need of a douchebag, just head into the marketing department of a major corporation.   They seem to grow on trees there.

I really give a shit about the army or Nike's branding of things.  I really do, I just happen to suck that much that this would be something I would care about -- I swear.

I'm a West Point graduate and played football for the Black Knights in the late 1990s. I grew up in Michigan and remain a huge Wolverine fan. I would classify the alumni reaction to the rebranding efforts as mixed, but with a negative lean. Graduates generally like the new uniforms, the color schemes, and even the new logo. Having a secondary nickname ("Cadets") and mascot (the Army mule) is confusing, but not nearly as confusing as "Army West Point." The name has inspired almost universal hatred with the alumni base. I understand that Academy leadership and Nike officials were trying to address the public confusion around what West Point is and the relationship the institution has with the regular Army. A lot of people don't differentiate between the two, so they wanted to address that. In my mind, though, throwing the two together as "Army West Point" is clunky and clumsy. I would have preferred "Army Cadets" and then drive on with the Airborne mission, but they didn't ask me. Apparently they did consult other graduates and former players, but I'm not sure they actually listened. The United States Military Academy at West Point has a lot of tradition. So does the football team. Although I understand Army football will never return to the former glory days, I believe it is a mistake to deviate too much from a successful past. A name change certainly crosses that line. My issue is with the Superintendent, who pushed for and approved the name change.

I don't think Michigan fans have anything to worry about if the school joins the Nike family. Any potential changes at Michigan would be much more minor in nature and done through a more collaborative process.

Army (I will not refer to the team as Army West Point) has lost 13 straight games to Navy and that is an even bigger problem. Go out and beat those guys and then I guess you can call the team whatever you want.

Beat Navy!!!

Army should permanently use for every game the camo helmet and alternate uni they broke out for the Navy game a few years ago.  By far the best look ever for them, totally unique and nothing any other team can approach doing.  Instead of them using a helmet that makes them confusingly look exactly like their main rival, as well as a large catholic school in upper Indiana.

Most Soldiers don't really care about the Army football team, and quite a few don't even know what it is. From what I understand, the re-brand is supposedly going to help the general public and potential athletics recruits understand the difference between West Point and the actual Army.  Although, if a high school recruit can't do the 30 seconds of research required to figure out what West Point is, he probably doesn't belong there in the first place.

Clearly not what I was saying.  Plenty of Soldiers don't know or care that "Army" is a collegiate football team.  There are quite a few who think it is a team put together from active duty Army personnel.  West Point leadership loves to sell the idea that the entire Army is behind the old Black Knights and cheering them on to victory, but that really isn't true.

in the contract they signed.

"Henceforth all US Army vehicles will display the Nike Swoosh prominently on all sides fo the vehicle.  In addition, all unit patches will incorporate the Nike Swoosh in design.  All changes made to comply with this contract must be approved by Nike senior management."

have managed to stay competitive in today's CF, but it will be great for the rivalry when the Cadets beat them. Hoping they get it done this year. What a great rivalry!
