OT- NHL Trade Deadline Day

Submitted by Yostbound and Down on

Open thread re: Deadline Day. Lots of moving parts yesterday...Yandle to NYR, Cole to DET, Coburn to TBL, and this morning Petry (prospective Wings D-man target) to MTL.

So, what are some other moves that could go down? For Wings fans, will Holland go after Phaneuf? For Toronto, is the fire sale over? For Chicago, will Sharp be moved, will they find a replacement for Kane's injury? Any rumors or trades you'd like to see happen?

Then again it might be kinda anticlimactic as the big moves (Evander Kane, Clarkson, Jagr) are already done. But who cares, TSN and Sportsnet will both be covering it like fiends while we take it a little easier down here in the States.

Most of the contenders have snatched up the best available dmen. I know the Phaneuf rumors are flying, but what about the Canton boy, Wisnieski from Columbus. Gotta be hell for a Michigan guy playing there.

for basically a 2nd and 3rd? I take back all the bad things I said about Holland over the summer when we resigned Cleary and Quincey.

It's not your money to spend and it's not like the wings need that cap space this year. If anything it just takes up a roster spot for a young guy that could be playing in GR every night. I assume he'll transition into the front office next year. Wings have done that for years now (Yzerman, Maltby, Draper, Osgood, etc.).

Ok, obviously not... but every million they do spend on a guy who plays 11 games a season is money they could have used to make a run at a UFA in the offseason (I'd love to have gotten Ehrhoff, Niskanen etc).

I'm not mad at Cleary, good for him getting the money. Aside from loyalty and if Holland/Babcock really thought Cleary's off-ice qualities are that worthwhile, there's no reason to pay him what they did, so in that sense it's absolutely a bad move by management.

Reports are showing that the Wings just traded a conditional 3rd round pick in 2016 for Marek Zidlicky.  This most likely stops any fear of Phaneuf coming to Detroit.  Good move all around as Zidlicky is strong on the power play.

I look at these trades as helping make the team deeper.  Yes some players will lose playing time . But come playoff time those players will be hungry if called on due to injury.

Cole and Zidlicky are solid and will hopefully give the Wings slightly more offensive punch. But man, do I miss the days of a Chris Chelios or a Robert Lang being under the tree on trade deadline day. Although I guess this is like an Ulf Samuelsson or Dmitri Mironov, not bad, just an obvious rental.

Looking back I thought we got what we should have expected when we picked up Lang.

When he came to Detroit everyone though that because of his size he was Shanahan 2.0 but that wasn't really his game.

He was a solid 20 goal scorer but really only had 1 good season when he was chasing a Jagr in his prime around the rink.

I dont know how many people are watching The NHL Network . The coverage is awesome . So many old hockey stories . All sorts of former  players and former executives .  If you like hockey and know the game and the old players. Its really cool .

The sabres are trying to finish last at all costs. Buffalo has traded away everyone that can help them win games, but they are building something great for the future. If buffalo gets the first pick they will get the best player to come into the league since Crosby / Ovie. With Kane / Bogosian already on board the sabres, should they add several veterans and their young guys start turning the corner, they are going to be one hell of a team in a couple years.

Their rebuild started 3 years ago. They dropped everyone they had on the roster for picks and just started putting players away. Textbook rebuild that teams should follow more often.

They easily have the #1 prospect system in the NHL. No holes or weaknesses at any position.
