OT - NHL Lockout News/Bettman and NHLPA Hate Thread

Submitted by Red_Lee on

Shitty titty fuckity fuck.

NHL rejects NHLPA's offer, no future talks planned.

So much "optimism" reported yesterday, only to have my balls stabbed with a soldering iron. I am not just angry at Bettman (actually less after seeing his passion in press conference linked below). I am ready to burn this mothafucka to the ground because bitches can't get their heads on straight.

I really wish college hockey made it to the regional level. I'm about to buy a passport so I can see some quality hockey in Canada. THIS IS AMERICA I SHOULDN'T WANT TO GO TO CANADA.

Bettman visibly angry and curb stomping reporters.

Mod edit: I took down the original title, mostly because it's getting late. OP, feel free to create a new title full of anger for Bettman/Fehr, but the sidebar should avoid titles that might be taken the wrong way if possible. JGB.

I did my graduate economic presentation last night on sports issues related to how much control the sports leagues have and basically what most of the studies say is that the owners are full of shit when they announce the revenue they have earned in a year.

A lot of the owners own other businesses related to owning teams like concessions or the TV networks. So what they do is purposely have the TV network pay them less for games...yet the value of the TV network (which the owner owns part of as well) increases.

On the books it looks like a loss of income but in reality it isn't.

I have no sympathy for the owners.

It's very frustrating to hear the owners side speak though and just going....wow you're full of shit. You know what you're offering is a HUGE gain for you and acting like it's a concession by saying we dropped that 100% improvement for ourselves down to a 90% improvement for ourselves....how could the league not accept this offer?? We are bargaining!

I'm not watching the NHL when it comes back.

While Bettman isn't the problem in complete entirety, most fans and I blame him. Is there anyone above Bettman? Is he like a Supreme Court Justice and just steps down whenever he wants? Can he get fired? Bettman is doing something wrong. . .

I read a great take on Bettman's tenure Bill Simmons.  If they lockout again I'm not going to miss them that much this time around.  Its hard to believe that the last 2 times a major market has won the Cup (NYR and LA) they have followed that up with a lockout.  Stern must be loving this. He has the Knicks, Lakers, and Heat just to name a few as great story lines and the NHL is sitting on the sidelines agin.

They came so far the last few days and then the house of cards just collapsed, just like that.

There is still time to save the season, in 2005 the entire season wasn't locked out until February. I hope that these two clowns can get together and save the damn season. We need a hockey playoffs.

Here's a little more on the state of things - (LINK)

Long story made short, according to Bettman, the owners' offer from earlier in the week is now a non-starter, including any discussion of the "make whole payments", which would have given players money on contracts signed before the lockout started.

It also indicated that, at least before the Board Of Governor's meeting, there was some belief that a deal was near, but then after the meeting, things rapidly deteriorated.

Idiots. They're all idiot owners. Seriously. If you want to make money DON'T BUY A FUCKING SPORTS TEAM. Sports teams are TERRIBLE for return on investments! You don't buy a sports team because you want to make money off it. The above poster is right, the owners can fudge their balance sheets in all kinds of ways. If they own the arena, the arena can rent to the team at some cost, and that cost can be taken out of the "team's" profits. So money is a non-issue. Sports owners own teams because they WANT to own teams. Stop pretending like you need to make money off it too.

There's a reason no one wants to buy the Coyotes. It's because no one wants to own a hockey team in Arizona.

The owners threw away a season and shit on their fans 7 years ago to totally revamp the system. Now they're saying "we got it wrong, adn left ourselves too many loopholes. Fuck you again Fans. And Oh, we want more money."

Disgraceful.

I have been hearing the whole time that Fehr has been fighting for the leagues top players, not the players as a whole. The players had a deal yesterday they were ready to take, Fehr told them no because they could get more.

Is "make whole" or, will the league pay the contracts that it's, ya know, OBLIGATED TO PAY that are from the old CBA?

Minnesota's owner signed 2 identical $93M contracts right before the lockout happened. Now that owner is fighting to have the contracts he signed months ago subject to new rules so he doesn't have to pay $93M.

Seriously?

A league that is run by such an incompetent group of executives that regularly needs permission from its employees to save itself from its own stupid management decisions can't be taken seriously and really needs to be tossed into the dustbin of history.  Blow the whole damned thing up and start over.

The more I think about it, the more I'm rooting for the nuclear option on these NHL talks.  Let the league go away, and the actual, viable franchises with decent ownership can start over.  Who's with me?  Yeaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh . . . .
