A league source told ESPN that the NFL plans to lessen its penalties for testing positive for marijuana and loosen its restriction on the drug  - the latter meaning the league will increase the amount of marijuana that has to be in one's system to qualify as a positive test.  The details are not in the report.

Also - and this has previously been reported - the league will begin testing for HGH.  The gentleman pictured below denies the necessity of this second change in policy.

Using HGH for muscle building is popular with athletes and bodybuilders

I cant help but wonder if the incongruity of Josh Gordon's expected year long ban for trace amounts of synthetic weed as Ray Rice walks free from league punishment for beating his fiance senseless in an elevator might have had something to do with this.

It was synthetic? As much as I think weed is healthy, safe, and should be legal, synthetic weed is harmful to health, dangerous, and needs to be outlawed. I feel like there's going to be studies performed using synthetic THC that show negative effects and then used to try to convince people that weed in general is bad. They're already using studies performed with synthetic vitamins to create sentiment that vitamins are bad for you. The mainstream media reports these studies without mentioning that the supplements were artificial, and the less informed sector of the public buys it as applying to naturally-sourced supplements. The worst part is a number of the companies manufacturing drugs they want you to use instead of vitamins are the ones putting a lot of the synthetic supplements on the shelves (and providing around 15% of mainstream media's total advertising revenue...ad buys = content control)

Dan Partrick was talking about this this morning.  His position is that the league has basically told the players union that they are going to seriously crack down on weed use until the union agrees to hgh testing.  The union called and the NFL dropped the hammer on Gordon.  HGH testing is coming for sure and weed testing and penalties are going to go away.

A step in the right direction for the NFL. As far as HGH goes, the league should permit the use of deer antler extracts but not the synthetic HGH.

I think this is another attempt to make the game safer. They want to slow the players down and therefore create less violent collisions by letting them all be stoned.

Both legalization of marijuana and medical marijuana are very complicated matters. One of the most outrageous outcomes of marijuana prohibition is that many sick people cannot legally access the medicine that works best for them. For many seriously ill people, medical marijuana is the only medicine that relieves their pain and suffering, or treats symptoms of their medical condition, without debilitating side effects. Opponents of medical marijuana argue that marijuana is addictive, leads to harder drug use, interferes with fertility, impairs driving ability, and injures the lungs, immune system, and brain. They say that medical marijuana is a front for drug legalization and recreational use.
