OT-NFL Replacement Refs

Ok i have had enough of teh replacement refs to last a lifetime.  If anyone else watched the end of the Packers-Seahawk game you know what i am talking about.

For one, there was a obvious offensive PI that was called defensive PI against the Packers.  This keeps the Seahawk drive alive.  Then the last play of the game was hailmary for Seattle, first it was the most obvious offensive PI i have seen, Tate obviously pushed Shields down.  No call on this.  Then Jennings intercepts the ball and Tate wrestles the ball away from Jennings on the ground.  Replay clearly shows that Jennings had possession and Tate pulled it away on the ground.  To top it all off, one ref signaled touchdown while the other signaled touchback as though Shields intercepted the ball in the end zone.

Fucking bullshit calls just cost the Packers a game.  NFL pay the refs to avoid this embarrassment that we are currently calling the NFL.

on this blog was arguing with me that the complaints w/the refs is ridiculous and that even the real refs make bad calls...bullshit. Packers got hosed and the NFL is embarassing.

I think that last play in the MNF game is overshadowing the bigger problems with the officials.  I don't have any issue with the call on the field being a touchdown and I don't have a problem with the play not being overruled on replay (you would have a hard time telling me there was indisputable evidence of possession by the defender).  The real thing to rail on the replacements about is the spots and general knowledge of the NFL rulebook, that is the embarassing part.

Packers for sure got hosed but I think all the anger should be directed at the NFL who refuses to give their officials more money and the officialy who refuse to take less money. (arguing which side is right in the arbitration is a separate story all together).  The stand-in officials are obviously doing the best that they can, they're under unprecedented scrutiny, and--like the regular officials--they make mistakes.  This one just happened to be the biggest mistake in recent memory considering the timing of the game and the stage they were on.

I feel bad for them.

To add on to this, I think the lack of consistancy is the biggest problem here.  If the stand-in officials made the same ticky tack PI calls from play to play, series to series, and week to week, the players and coaches would simply adjust to it.

That's obviously not the case and if it goes on another week I think one of the Harbaugh's might actually Woody Hayes an official.  Which would be pretty fucking entertaining if nothing else.

Are you trying to say that no other team in the history of college or pro ball ever got hosed by the refs, accidentally or on purpose?

I can think of a few things far worse.  The Pittsburgh/Seattle Super Bowl was the worst officiating I have ever seen in a football game, and I started out cheering for Pittsburgh until I turned it off, wondering why they made the fix so obvious.

How about Charles White's phantom touchdown in the Rose Bowl?  How about the "holding" penalty against Michigan on a successful fake punt in the Rose Bowl against USC, with Bo subsequently overhearing the ref who made the call say "There was no way I was going to let that son of a bitch win his last game here" while walking by the refs' locker room after the game?

Referees aren't some downtrodden people getting worked into the ground for less than minimum wage; they're people with great "day jobs" who make a lot of extra money with a very nice part-time gig.  It's great that the public suddenly loves the original refs so much, but the real problem is that there are no full time officials at any level of the sport.

When the regular refs come back, everyone will give them a hall pass for a week or two, and then they will start complaining about them, too.

PASSER OUT OF THE POCKET
(8) When the passer goes outside the pocket area and either continues moving with the ball (without
attempting to advance the ball as a runner) or throws while on the run, he loses the protection of the
one-step rule provided for in (1) above, and the protection against a low hit provided for in (5) above,
but he remains covered by all the other special protections afforded to a passer in the pocket
(numbers 2, 3, 4, 6, and 7), as well as the regular unnecessary-roughness rules applicable to all player
positions. If the passer stops behind the line and clearly establishes a passing posture, he will then be
covered by all of the special protections for passers.

then read your last sentence about stopping behind the line.

you could easily argue he wasn't moving with the ball, attempting to advance the ball or throwing on the run, though he was outside the pocket.  he stopped and stepped into his throw.  then was hit below the knees.

this was not an obvious blown call.  but i will say again that it's a dumb rule.

In this instance you'd be hard pressed to say he stopped and set and wasn't on the run- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UDObaQXqZhA&sns=em (Sorry, would embed, but mobile) Now I'll agree that's one of those rule interpretations that I could understand a replacement guy screwing up - "always call the hit below the knees a penalty", and not get the whole moving not moving thing. It's just one added on error that ends up looking like mass incompetence with the others. If that was all they messed up and Seattle had scored Packer fans would be complaining, but no one else would care.
