OT- NFL Jersey Sales - Compensation to Players Question

Submitted by El Demonio on

Now that Jordan Kovacs is headed down south to play for my beloved Dolphins, I was wondering if the individual players receive compensation or royalties for any of their pro jersey sales.  If Mr. Kovacs makes the team, I intend to purchase an Kovacs Dolphins Jersey.  I'd like think that he gets a small piece of that.  Anybody know?

While the NFL makes money and this money goes into the giant pool of which the players get a certain amount, Kovacs himself would get nothing from that specific jersey sale.  Given that he will be making the NFL minimum for the next couple of years, if he makes the team, it is unlikely that he will see a dime of any jersey sales for some time.

That said, if the Dolphins suddenly sold a huge number of Kovacs Jersey's, it could make it more difficult to cut him if he was borderline.  Yeah, I do believe the business side would have a bit of an influence.

My understanding is that it is a license deal with the team, and that as part of each player's contract he receives some percentage of sales based on known metrics.  So buy the jersey if you want to support Kovacs, but don't expect him to see much of the money.
