OT- NFL Draft Day 3 Open Thread

Submitted by M-Wolverine on
I'm thinking this won't be so OT, but I did think it would be yesterday, and we were surprised, so I don't want to jinx any guys getting drafted today. And anyway, with how the interest level usually goes for rounds 4-7, I'm guessing this will be a lot of me posting to myself anyway....

I plan on keeping ESPN's live tracker thing open on one of my monitors while I do work in my office this afternoon. So I may or may not post, depending on how work-focused I am.

Any thoughts on potential Wolverine draftees? I see Schilling in the 5th or 6th, with Webb a surprise pick in the 7th.

I predicted Schilling in the 4th round.

But I also said Mouton would get drafted in the 5th, and he obviously didn't last that long, so what do I know?

I posted a few days ago that I could see Webb or possibly Ezeh getting picked toward the tail end of the draft, so we'll see. Webb was under-utilized at Michigan, and his blocking was pretty damn good once he got bigger. I wish he would have redshirted back in 2007 so he could be returning for us in 2011.

Oh yeah, Ezeh! I could see a team taking a flyer on him in a later round given his early career performance and terrible defensive coaching the past couple years.

Going into this draft, I never would have guessed that this senior class could yield four draft picks, and it would be really surprising, but it looks like there's an outside chance it could happen.

I know Martell pretty well, I played basketball and football with him at PNHS although i have not spoke to him personally, i spoke to a mutal good friend Dontayo Gage and he told me that Martell is not expecting to get drated but expects to be a UFA and at least make a practice squad.

I'm a 'Skins fan and for so long the team has refused to actually draft players out of college, I'm excited that they're actually picking up picks. On the NFL Network they were just talking about how most of the players on any given NFL roster aren't first-day picks, and they are right. The picks made on Day 3 are crucial to NFL teams' success.

I hope my Chargers draft another Michigan Man. I was surprised with the Mouton pick, but I will gladly take it. I think Schilling will get drafted late in the 4th round, or early in the 5th. I also think Webb was under utilized. He would be worth a 6th or 7th round pick. Not so optomistic with Ezeh. Hopefully he gets drafted, but I just dont see it.

The good news? Regardless of who's on the bottom, it doesn't look like it'll be the Lions!

I still think Minnesota as a franchise is in a pretty wild tail spin. But point taken that Chicago is fast approaching a potentially nasty and protracted rebuilding era.

Yes, Green Bay is the clear favorite in the NFC North (obviously, they won the Super Bowl), but I think Detroit could legitimately be a contender. With Stafford (or even Hill) healthy, a slightly improved running game, and some upgrades in defensive backfield (all reasonable expectations), Detroit should win a lot of those close games that they lost last season.

Plus, that monster of a D-Line shut Rogers down last season (before he got knocked out of the game, I mean).

I missed what actually happened with that yesterday. Detroit traded their 3rd and 4th round picks to get another 2nd rounder which they used to draft Leshoure?

Doesn't seem like that bad of an idea. Their run game was lacking last year, and as people pointed out in yesterday's thread (I read it this morning to see what happened), Best probably can't handle being an every-down back. Getting a solid work horse RB isn't a bad plan (whether or not Leshoure was a good option remains to be seen).

I don't know, that doesn't sound like that bad of a deal. Sliding down a few spots in the 5th and 7th rounds doesn't strike me as a big loss, and they're really only one net pick down (i.e., they swapped from 3rd up to 2nd in exchange for losing their 4th round pick). I think I'm OK with that.

But if you're not sold on Leshoure, then clearly giving up anything to get him looks like a bad idea.

Because they did move up more than "a few spots". And the later round picks ARE interchangeable, but it just seemed like a bit of throw in desperation. Moving up to the end of the round shouldn't take more than an additional pick.

I look as the pick the other way...if he really works out, then it's a justifiable cost. But when you make these moves, they have to work out. Because they really CAN'T be spending another top two round picks NEXT year too on a RB.

That's a good point about next year's draft, I hadn't really thought of it that way. Fingers-crossed Leshoure is a solid RB in the pros.

I really like the direction the Lions are headed in, but I seriously can't wait until there's a draft in which the Lions aren't in clear need of so many different positions. It's like Millen had managed to put together a team with zero players on it.

0-16, remember? More seriously, while I didn't predict the first to put up that record ever, those that were going "playoffs!" after their preseason record, I was telling them they were nuts. I have never seen a team with less talent in my life, so the result, while surprising, wasn't crazy. Other than Calvin, and the kicker, who on that team would you have really hated to lose? I mean, a couple of guys were worth keeping, but no one you'd really feel bad about parting with.

Fans want to make the playoffs, but Lions fans have suffered for so long, they can get stupid at times too (plus there are MSU fans who like the Lions too). They aren't winning the Super Boel off this draft. So if they want to make their D-Line Awesome, and fill solid needs, they can pick running backs and receivers, and then use a 1 & 2 on young CBs and LBs (or O-Linemen) next year, where the draft might fall out in a way where guys they like better at those positions are available (not a great year this year for any of those positions). But you can't have complimentary high picks this year bust out and have to do it again next year. Then you're back to Millen's Lions.

Besides bumping Tommy out of the Playoffs, it really takes something out of the Draft without their fans freaking out over every pick. Heck, the Raiders haven't even done anything crazy yet.

Yay, a WR to the Dolphins! More people for Henne to throw to. (I really want Henne to work out at Miami, but it's been some rough going for him.)

Poor Tandon Doss has just been sitting at the "Best Overall" spot on ESPN's draft-tracker page all day, and no one wants him.

I can dig it, hopefully he keeps it up. Liked the dude since I've seen him at the combine.

The Rams are not playing about getting WRs. Pettis in the 3rd round and now Salas. Sam will have some help this year.

When they have a CB drafted, and I don't really remember the guy doing any better than anyone else against us?

Well it looks like my Bucs are re-tooling their D. Last year, their first two picks were DTs and this year their first two were DEs. Plus they picked up a LB from Washington and a Safety from Florida. Looks like the new staff has a clue. If one of their late round picks can turn out like Williams from last year. I'd be extremely happy.
