OT- NFL Draft Day 3 Open Thread

Submitted by M-Wolverine on
I'm thinking this won't be so OT, but I did think it would be yesterday, and we were surprised, so I don't want to jinx any guys getting drafted today. And anyway, with how the interest level usually goes for rounds 4-7, I'm guessing this will be a lot of me posting to myself anyway....

From a cuse blog: "With his combination of size and speed, Hogue will draw some interest. He could be a good fit as a strong-side linebacker in a 4-3. He shows good sideline-to-sideline pursuit, but his instincts are average. Hogue started his college career as a running back and still is learning to play linebacker."

The consensus is that he doesn't shed blocks well, but he's very fast and still learning to play LB because he was a hybrid LB/RB coming into college. With our d-line we need guys who can get to a spot and fill. I have a feeling we can occupy blockers just fine with the d-line we're putting together.

Nice pick in my opinion.

Not that I'm complaining, but is there a reason Greg Jones hasn't been picked up yet. There have been a fair number of ILB taken ahead of him. I thought he would have been taken by now.

EDIT: Jones has finally gone to the NY Giants as the 20th pick in the 6th round (185th overall).

I'm always confused when teams don't get their picks in on time. Especially Washington just now. It's not like another team snagged their target right before them. How could they not have two players immediately on their list? Even if one of those players got snatched, they basically had twice the time to figure out who to take next.

EDIT: Ok, at this point it appears that there's something else going on with Washington, seeing as they still haven't picked anyone. I wonder what the deal is.

According to ESPN's very handy interactive draft-tracker, UConn has had two people drafted besides Todman. Anthony Sherman (FB) went to Arizona in the 5th and Lawrence Wilson (OLB) went to the Panthers in the 6th.

I'd be A-OK with Detroit taking him. Their line was pretty good last year (below average in run blocking, but above average in protection), but some of those guys are going to need to be replaced soon. Getting some young blood in there now would be nice.

But at this point in the draft, the way linemen are pushed down in rounds, you might find a diamond in the rough (or at least some quartz). It's not like you're going to find some super athletic CB that all the scouts have missed.

They had a big time offense, and questionable D, but made only two of their picks on defense, and the 2nd not till the 6th round. Of the picks they kept, of course.

I've been watching the draft all afternoon, I step away for 15 minutes to go from my office back to my apartment, and I miss Schilling getting drafted! Damn it! (I also quick watching the 2nd round before Mouton got picked. Maybe I should just stop watching all together.)

Serisouly, though, huge congratulations to Mr. Schilling!

NFL.com's analysis of Boren's negatives:

Lacks height and length. Has trouble mirroring quicker interior pass rushers. Leans, lunges and struggles to sustain blocks at times. Only possesses adequate athleticism and will take some false steps. Character is in question after departure from Michigan mainly due to a new conditioning regimen and change in program atmosphere.

Thanks, Universe/Karma/AMSHG!!!

But there's a small part of me that's pretty happy that Justin Boren didn't get drafted.

Chances he stays in shape while in limbo wondering if he's even going to get a chance to sign as a FA to try out for a team's camp?

For mark herzlich to get drafted, but I think teams are afraid to take him because of everything that he has been through with cancer in the last few years. Hopefully he gets his name called soon.

NFL network just did a comparison between UM and the horror opponent in regard to draft picks. UM has 2 and App State has 3, at least at this point (5 picks left).
