OT: NFL Draft (Day 2) Thread

Submitted by Mr. Yost on

If this thread gets bumped off the top page, feel free to make another one once Day 2 of the draft begins.

But now that Day 1 is over...how do you think your team did? What are you looking for in rounds 2 and 3?

What were some surprises/good picks from last night?

I like what the Lions did with their first pick. I really wanted them to get Kirkpatrick or Gilmore, but going with Reiff who was by most considered the 2nd best lineman in the draft is a good get. It also is a position of need. I'd love to see them either take a chance on Jenkins if he is there, but that is a bit of a stretch because I don't see him being there. If Upshaw is still there that would also be awesome, but unlikely. I think if Jenkins or Upshaw aren't there I would have to say get another offensive lineman, maybe Konz I'm thinking.

I really like the fast pace and all the trades (8?) in the first round.  I guess that's what happens when you don't have to pay an unproven rookie 32 million guaranteed.

It was nice to not wait 15-20 minutes for each pick!

With that said...I would like to see them do rounds 1-2 on Friday, 3-5 on Saturday and 6-7 on Sunday. This 4 day thing is stupid, and I miss not having the draft on Sunday. Laying around and trying to see what Michigan players got picked up in the late rounds.

Like, don't love, the Giants pick of David Wilson...would have like to have seen them go Oline but that can be addressed in round 2.

Like most of us I'm primarily looking to see if Martin gets picked up tonight.

I hope there's still one or two high profile corners on the board by the time the lions get to pick. I'm sleeping better now that backus has a legit backup, so I'd really like to see that secondary shored up...enough so that Green Bay's second qb doesn't throw 400+ on us.

I wouldn't complain about another O-Lineman, but secondary is a bigger need. I guess take whichever has the higher talent then (imo)

I like the Bills drafting a CB and NOT taking Floyd, who was rumored to be a top target.  I would like to see a solid second/slot receiver or a linebacker that can cover in round 2.

I wouldn't complain about Martin at all.  I know the pattern of drafting late round WR's, but that has resulted in a less than inspiring WR corps, other than Johnson and he has the dropsies in big spots.  I'd like to see them get Hill out of GT but he'd be a reach in the 2nd round anyway.  If he's available in the third, I'd take him in a heartbeat.  6'4", 215 lbs and runs a 4.36 40!  He might be Megatron Jr. (we could call him Starscream, that sounds kind of cool).

I am happy the Patriots are finally filling some glaring holes on the defensive side of the ball. Defensive end and linebacker were both big needs in this draft and I am glad to see them move up to pick up some nice talent instead of stock piling the picks for depth but not quality.

I agree with you. I'm a Lions fan, but I think New England had the best first round out of anybody. I would have to say they have to be the heavy favorites to win the AFC East and possibly take another trip to the Superbowl. Unfortunately, because I hate the Cowboys and Colin Cowherd is going to drive me nuts about them today, I think that Dallas had the 2nd best first round by moving up and getting Claiborne that was huge for them and a great move.

Because damn, they need help on that side. But I'm not sure there's much left in the defensive secondary for them to take this high. Unless THEY want to be the one to take Jenkins, figuring "we're the Goddamn Patriots, we can do whatever we want".  Which might not be horrible because if he's a bust, well, it's not like they need him forever, and if he's an instant impact....that's what they need. (Though he may be gone by the Raiders pick they have).

If another elite O-lineman falls, I could maybe see them going that way...but that's long term gain.  Receivers seem to have fallen in the draft, so maybe there. But I'd rather have defense. Just not another running back...they're horrible drafting those.

But in all reality, they'll probably not like what's there at one of them, trade it away for more picks in later rounds. Sigh.

They were just talking on the radio how the draft probably got better ratings than Game 7 NHL games and playoff positioning NBA games.

I thought the Lions did fine. Nothing great, nothing horrible. If another one of these 1st round rated O-linemen slide, it wouldn't be the end of the world for them to get another and shore up their line for years.

I was shocked and thrilled to see the Pats not trade down and get more picks next year, and actually take people...and take them on DEFENSE.  If they had done that last year, they might have won the Super Bowl.  Because most of the offensive guys they took didn't really contribute that much.  The best part is they gave up their 3rd and 4th to move up, but kept both 2nd round picks. Odds are they're trade one so they're not bored the rest of the weekend (they have no more picks after giving them up) but they could get a couple more instant starters, which at the QB and coach's age....the time is now, or never. If we can get Brady to 4-2 in Super Bowls, that will still look pretty darn good. (Do really well in the draft, and shoot for 5-2).

I thought both teams did well for themselves with their trade.  The Pats need an influx of high-end defensive talent now, while the Bengals always need depth (b/c they aren't going to pay to keep many of their free agents).  I look forward to watching the Pats make another run at the title and watching the Bengals defend themselves in court.

Not loving the Browns move to get Richardson.  In today's NFL, RB doesn't seem to be that valuable that and on average, RBs have a very limited shelf life in the pros.  A team that has a lot of needs should not be giving up draft picks, even if they're in the later rounds.

Browns fan and season ticket holder here.  I love what they did with both picks candidly.  We had the worst offense in the league bar none last year and the combo of Richardson and Weedon should make them instantly more potent and fun to watch.  From everything I've read Richardson is in the Peterson, elite back status and those are worth top 5 picks.  He will be on the field every down and should take considerable pressure off Weedon (Colt is gone thank goodness) due to his talent.  People are making a big deal about Weedon's age but if he's the real deal (and Holmgren thinks he is) them you'll have 10 plus years with him.  I'll take that.

I'm pumped.  Now...go get a corner or a wide out in the 2nd round.

No I"m good with what they did.  I know RGIII is this year's, cant miss -sure fire first ballot hall of famer who will probably break every QB record for passing and rushing during his illustrious 18 year career.  And during that career he is surely going to win not one, not two, not three, not four, not five, not six championships he will also surely win so many MVPs they will have to retire the trophy but......

So was Ryan Leaf.

I put this in another thread, but here is what I hope my Lions do in Rounds 2 and 3.

Scenario 1:
2nd - Jonathan Martin
3rd - Brandon Boykin

Scenario 2:
2nd - Jenoris Jenkins/Josh Robinson
3rd - Mike Adams

Scenario 3:
2nd - Lavonte David
3rd - Brandon Boykin

If the Lions don't take a CB today, they've failed. Period. Trade up if you have to. I don't care if you get Jonathon Martin and Lavonte David (love both picks) there comes a time when need outweighs value. And the Lions desperately need a CB. Houston is solid/serviceable but he's not a shutdown guy. I think Smith is a playmaker, but you can't match him up against a #1 receiver.

I'm afraid you prematurely shot your wad here on what was supposed to be a dry run, if you will. I'm afraid you're going to have a something of a mess on your hands.

I'm a Texans fan and I like the Mercilus pick, but he needs some work to maximize his athletic ability. If anyone can get it out of him I think Wade Phillips can. Still, I would've preferred a playmaking WR at that spot, like Hill, and he was available.

Incomplete.

The Broncos haven't picked yet but have loaded up with later round picks. The good thing about having so many l3-4th round picks, we need C's and DT's, i.e Molk and Martin.

I think we're going to take Worthy, some are saying Fleener. I like Jenkins as I believe he is a potential shutdown corner despite being kind of a knuckelhead.

... or as long as Mike Martin is on the board.  They need a young NT who will be ready to take over for aged, gimpy-kneed Casey Hampton by 2013.  Rivals reports that Martin established a stronger relationship with the Steelers' staff during the pre-draft period than any other team.  But with his great performance at the combine, the worry is that if they pass in round 2, he disappears before their pick in round 3.  Actually, I'd be stunned if he were still available in late round 3.

I was giddy when the Steelers took Woodley in the 2nd (!) round in 2007, knowing what a steal it was.  And it was.  Hope this turns out the same way.  Come on... Hulk Smash!

The guy seems to have the physical skills according to the pre-draft reports I've seen, but I see the character of the locker room as more a rationale for bringing in more high-character guys who won't disrupt the culture as opposed to taking risks on guys with checkered histories.  I admit that Roethlisberger seemed to benefit from having some straight-arrow vets around him to straighten him out a little after embarrassed himself and team post SB XLIII (embarrassed at best.. at worst, yikes), but he probably only got that opportunity because he was the franchise QB.  I doubt they'd extend a rookie that kind of leeway if his behavior was a worry.

in that they don't mind putting 300 lbs guys at the end spots in their 3-4.   On the other hand, that doesn't make much sense considering they just drafted Ziggy Hood and Cam Heyward the past two years to play the ends-- their pressing need is at NT.   Perhaps they think he can be a utility guy: rotate in at DE and provide Hampton some relief at NT on passing downs, when his quickness might be more of an asset.  Should also be noted that Dick LeBeau is willing to drop his NT back into a short zone on zone blitzes, so you'd much, much rather have Martin doing that than the aforementioned gimpy-kneed and old Casey Hampton.

Would not rule him out at NT on that basis.  He's too small to be Hampton, but he's not too small to play the position in many down/distance situations.
