OT: NFL All-Rookie Team; lot of Big Ten reps, none from Michigan :(

Submitted by oriental andrew on

Pro Football Writers Association All-Rookie team was announced this morning. Full list is at the link:

http://www.profootballwriters.org/2017/01/17/cowboys-elliott-pfwa-rooki…

As mentioned below, Zeke Elliott won NFL RoY and ORoY awards, while Joey Bosa won DRoY.

The Big Ten was otherwise well-represented with 7 players total, although none of the players are Michigan alums.

RB: Zeke Elliott and Jordan Howard (IU)

WR: Michael Thomes (osu)

OT: Jack Conklin (msu), Taylor Decker (osu)

DL: Bosa, Yannick Ngakoue (Maryland)

This basically confirms that osu was fielding the better part of an NFL team in 2015.

were Willie Henry, Graham Glasgow, and Jake Rudock. A couple other UDFA's. I could be forgetting someone though. I'm not sure how Henry played, but Glasgow got spot time until later and played well.

Are we surprised after only 3 Michigan players were drafted?  Heck, OSU had more players go in the upper half of the first round than Michigan had in the whole draft.  I think you could make an argument for Glasgow being the C or OG, but this feels about right.

I'm still frosted about Zeke Elliot and Derrick Green.  Both were 5 stars considered to be comparable talents.  One turns into a star (on a team with an embarassment of riches) and the NFL ROY; the other never starts for any Div 1 program.

Check in after this year's Michigan draft class completes its NFL rookie season.

OSU fan here.  Zeke was actually a 4* on most sites (I never saw him as a 5* anywhere, but there are so many sites that he may have been).  OSU initially was after Green, but eventually pulled its offer to pursue Zeke.  Many on this site did not believe the OSU posters who were saying at the time that OSU was not interested in Green and wanted Zeke.  But to be fair, OSU fans would not believe Michigan fans who brought the same type of message (our 4* is better than your 5*) to an OSU board.

As a Lions "fan" insofar as one would admit, I was unaware how good Taylor Decker was until watching him this season. He played like a veteran from day one and not only held his own but was actually dominant at times. He should play 10+ years in the League. And as I remember there were several left tackles picked before him.

Also I believe Jack Conklin from Michigan State made at least one All-Pro team. That's pretty impressive.

Not many people have talked about Jordan Howard being 2nd in rush yrds..top 2 were rookies which is pretty impressive..Howard was well known around here after we played Indiana..We should all pitch in and get our own team.. community GM system.

Certainly not a great thing that OSU can go to recruits and point out all these shiny objects - not only do we get you drafted, you can get it done in 3 years and go get paid (more than you do here in Columbus...zing)....and we had player of the year on BOTH offense and defense.

The one that struck me was Michael Thomas - I know many crow here about you can't succeed at OSU as a WR but there again, that arguement is something Urban can just laugh at and wave Michael Thomas around.

Jim has a multi year lag but we need to be producing similar type talent and results in the big leagues or we are at a competitive disadvantage in a relative sense.  Esp considering we have so many NFL coaches - we need to show NFL success to guys with results in the league once we cycle thru "Hoke guys".

Despite Michael Thomas's rookie success, Meyer doesn't exactly have the best track record with WRs. Riley Cooper is probably the second-best NFL WR that Meyer-coached teams have ever produced, even though Meyer has been a FBS coach for 15 years and has been recruiting at a high level for 11 of those years.

well this year and was rock solid as a blindside protector for Stafford. He was left on the island for the majority of the time and stood tall against pass rusher.  His footwork and techniques were superb.

If there's anything that he can improve on, it's his run blocking and consistency overall. The Lions have found their franchise LT and they didn't need to spend a top 10 pick to get it.

Glasgow played pretty well this year with the time he was given, but didn't hear a peep out of any other Michigan players this year.

Rudock was cut and I'm guessing Henry hasn't played much beyond clean up duty.

The point is this isn't surprising.

Oh great... more recruiting firepower for Urban. I was really hoping that Jalen Ramsey would win the DPoY, so that Ohio State wouldn't sweep all 3 Rookie of the Year awards.

Only makes it worst that 4 of them made the All-Rookie team too.
