Sportscenter just had a "this just in" clip, saying Gene Smith has called a news conference tonight at 7pm. They reported that this is an indication that Tressel's job could be in jeopardy because he knew about the NCAA violatons prior to reporting them to the school. Sounds like they're not too happy about him keeping the info from them. I'm sure he'll just get slapped on the hand, but I guess we won't know till 7pm tonight.
OT: News conf. tonight at 7pm-SC saying indication Tressel's job could be in jeopardy.
He'll get a suspension for some meaningless game and OSU will keep being OSU.
No, he will be suspended from now until the start of spring practice.
I'd this is true, then the hammer will come down on Tressel, not for the lack of investigation, but because it means he lies to the NCAA investigation in Dec.
My hopes for anything meaningful to come out of this are about as high as yours.
COME ON!!!! Ohio isn't going to do anything to their golden boy. The NCAA will have to throw him in jail for the Ohio State to not have him on the sideline.
Even if he was in jail, he would be in a work release program that would allow him to continue to coach. Until he starts losing to Michigan, he is untouchable.
I will believe it when I see it
Bring back John Cooper
For that job, Dantonio would leave East Lansing so fast that the Libyan students' heads would be spinning. Tha would crack me up.
Oh, I totally agree. If this is worse case scenario territory that we're talking about, and Tressel is canned, Urban Meyer would have to be their top pick. It should be an interesting spring in C-Bus.
@ 08mms - I'm the same way. I used to be able to root for little brother, as long as they weren't playing Michigan. Since Dantonio's been there, I can't do it. With the exception of his hatred for U of M, he strikes me as a fraud. I would crap my pants laughing so hard, if he were to split for Columbus.
I kind of like that outcome. I've always despised Dantonio more than I've despised Little Brother's football program in general, and it would be nice to not have to split targetting my hate between Dantonio and OSU anymore.
They forgot to drink their tiger blood.
I wouldn't mind if Tressel gets fired (obviously) but part of me wants him to stay so that we can finally start beating him..
I want him to retire with a 9-6 record against M not a 9-1 record
OSU Nation would never allow Tressel to lose five in a row to Michigan. He'd be gone after loss number four.
Definite hand slap, I'm getting an Iowa press conference feeling about this.
Except lying to the NCAA means they are much more likely to respond sua sponte.
Jeopardy is on at 7pm weeknights here.
Cascade of corrections on meaning of "irony" (versus, say, "coincidence") beginning in 3 ... 2 ... 1 ... .
Was that a joke? Because it sounds like a great idea to me.
Liveblog should probably happen. My roommate is gone tonight and I don't expect any lady visitors.
Liveblog! Liveblog! Liveblog!
Mods, please make this happen.
If you go to http://www.coveritlive.com/ and toy around a little bit, you can set up your own liveblog fairly easily. I may or may not have liveblogged with friends through a CLE class. It was more entertaining than AOL Group chats due to being able to embed pictures. You might need to set up a quick google blogspot blog to host it, but that is relatively easy.
You might need to set up a quick google blogspot blog to host it, but that is relatively easy.
Is there any reason it couldn't be embedded in an MGoBoard thread?
It absolutely could, unless Brian, Tim, etc, objected.
I would be very surprised if he lost his job. It is probably just the public anouncement of what is going on and what OSU is going to do about it.
The local press in C-bus is not being kind or rosy about this at this point. I'm guessing if it does start to look like it could impact the program meaningfully the local press will circle the wagons and turn a blind eye. You dont sell commercial time in C-bus reporting on the fall of the vest if its more than fluff.
If he lied to the NCAA he is getting suspended, just ask Bruce Pearl and Dez Bryant. The NCAA is weak but they have a problem with being mislead.
"Just for that, Jim, you can't teach your football class anymore.
"Now let that be a lesson to you, and get back out there and sign some more 5 star recruits that may or may not have been convicted of a uniform-sizing underage girl molestation scheme."
When all of my real classwork was basically finished, I took Tressel's class my senior year as an elective.
When I saw that video during one of their games of him teaching it I started laughing my ass off.
He does not actually teach the class, Cooper, Bruce, and some other position coaches do everything. The fact that he's listed as the Prof is the biggest load of bullshit ever.
Tressel showed up every day to take attendance and crack a joke, then he would leave, every single time.
On the last day of class he was supposed to sign autographs. Everyone in class showed up with jerseys, pictures, helmets, all kinds of shit. I didn't bring anything because I couldn't care less. The fucking guy didn't even show up for it, I swear to god. The other coaches said he got in late the night before from a recruiting trip (hand delivering Pryor's corvette). There may have been 20 kids in the class, and he couldn't even show up.
I get the feeling it's more like what Michigan went through when Mary Sue and others were at the presser. I bet it's more a show of support, and not an admission of guilt.
I'm calling it here. Tressel knew. He confronted the Tat-5. They lied to him and said it didn't happen. He didn't investigate further. It's called "plausible deniability"
That's kind of been Tressel's approach throughout his coaching career, hear no evil, see no evil. That was the defense he made at Youngstown State. Hell, it's the defense Steve Fisher made when the whole Webber scandal blew up in Michigan's face and we know how well that ended. If the NCAA digs and finds dirt, plausible deniability won't save OSU or Tressel.
Helps when there's a federal racketeering investigation to add some subpoena power.
The NCAA's Ed Martin investigation was going nowhere until UM convinced the FBI to make people answer the NCAA's questions, too. I don't see Gene Smith doing anything of the sort to undermine Tressel.
OSU isn't just going to come out and spill their guts about this. They may come out as Michigan did and claim that they are investigating it further, this is where they are at at this point, here is what they are going to find out. They support their coaches, players, etc. etc., but news has come to light and it important for the sake of college athletics, OSU, and the Big Ten conference that everything is resolved properly, so on and so forth.
Divine retribution, wouldn't it be great if this was Tressel's downfall. He got away with the I didn't know Clarett was getting paid fiasco plus other things we all know about. It would be kind of Like OJ simpson going to jail for kidnapping instead of murder. He's still getting exactly what he deserves. I hope the same happens for you Tress.
Divine retribution would be the NCAA forcing OSU to vacate most or all of the victories they've accrued over Michigan the past decade. I can't think of anything that would crush a Buckeye fan more.
Works for me.
Sorry, but that doesn't work for me. I want it done on the field, and soon.
If he promises to come back to coach in 2025.
...I don't see how Money Man Matta has a job.
Tressel got caught; Matta hasn't (yet).
/answers own post, expects negbang
expect anything to come of this? I believe it when i see it.
Might be a flat-out denial.
But if this is true and the NCAA didn't know about it before the Yahoo story, OSU is likely screwed -- Tressel is a representative of that university and he essentially lied to the NCAA. It would also open the question of who knew Tressel knew. These things tend to cascade -- that's why the coverup is always worse than the crime.
Ask Martha Stewart, Kwame etc.
Calling a news conference about something you're going to do absolutely nothing about is rather pointless, is it not?
This is the same Gene Smith who desperately scrambled to find a loophole in the rules so all those players could play in the Sugar Bowl.
This is all for show. Nothing is going to be done.
That would make it the best week for Michigan rivalry in a long time. Beat MSU in basketball for a season sweep, Tressell gets canned, MSU loses the coach they think will build them into a power and melts down, OSU hires a career 500 coach because he beat Rich Rod 3 times in a row (like hiring Cooper).
Yes, I know the last two seem contradictory, but it's not.
If Gene Smith was about honor and doing the right thing then those 5 players wouldn't have played against Arkansas. So I don't expect him to come down hard on Tressel either.
So THIS is what it was like for everyone else the last couple years. Feels good.
Feels good to get some Scott Tenorman tears. It feels like the look on Lou Holtz's face after the 2006 ND game.
As for this, I don't want Tressel to have to "resign" over "health reason" or "national security" or however else they spin it if it's true, I want REVENGE and not excuses, I want the win column to get back into the 20's before they collapse into a shit show coaching search. I want this back ,legit.
As things always seem to go with tOSU and their corrupt program, nothing major will come of this...
Gene Smith will probably announce that OSU is conducting an "investigation" into the matter, and then he will say a bunch of nothingness like "we have the best compliance people in college."
This "investigation" will be very, very limited, like all the others.
Nothing but a slap-on-the-wrist, program is too high profile for the NCAA to come down on.
I mean lets make sure he learned his lesson and give him a 1 year suspension but we'll let him coach against MSU, Nebraska, Wisc, PSU, UM, and the B1G champ game, as long as you promise me to not go pro but by god next year coach you better not pull this stunt again.
was there a higher profile program in the country at the time?
I don't know why people are saying "slap on the wrist". One of two things happened:
- Tressel is innocent, he didn't deserve anything bad because of this.
- Tressel knew, is guilty of major violations having to do with integrity (a fireable offense in his contract) and likely gets a show-cause penalty and ends up an assistant in the NFL.
There's not really any middle ground here. Even if OSU were to not fire him with cause, he would still end up being fired because of the show-cause penalty. He's either guilty and gone, or innocent and nothing happens. I just don't see the middle ground.
...deals in absolutes..."
Haha, I had that coming. +1.
What is going to happen tonight to the Senator.
"He do that, he go to the box, you know. Two minutes, by himself, you know and he feel shame, you know. And then he get free.'
Triva: What movie did I steal that from?
If anything bad happens to Tressel, how long is it until Pryor is in the Ohio Witness Protection Program?
So many great lines in that movie.
3. Tressel knew, is guilty of major violations having to do with integrity, and gets away with it because (A) the best witness the NCAA can muster against him is a tattoo shop owner who trades tattoos for little golden pants and/or (B) the OSU administration is like Honey Badger, and don't care.
(For the few who don't know about Honey Badger: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4r7wHMg5Yjg ) NSFW!
A) I could definitely buy, but then it'd just be that nothing could get proven, thus being just like he was innocent. No slap on the wrist at all.
B) I don't think can happen. The penalty the NCAA would likely place on Tressel is a show-cause, which means that OSU either has to fire Tressel, or go through a review process where they have to justify employing him, with the NCAA having final say on whether they can or not.
Bruce Pearl would seem to be the obvious analogue to this situation. He lied to the NCAA in an investigation, later admitted to lying (seemingly of his own volition, but maybe someone can clarify that for me). Tennessee docked his salary $1.5 mil. and restricted him to recruiting on campus. The SEC suspended him 8 games. Everyone now expects the NCAA to hit Tennessee with a show cause penalty, but it hasn't happened yet.
OSU may be hoping that the NCAA decided those penalties were enough and won't hit Pearl with a show cause penalty. If the allegations are true and admitted, maybe they'll hit Tressell with similar penalties (multi-game suspension, dock his pay) and hope the NCAA is satisfied.
If the allegations are true, however, I would think Pryor and the other four are done, as they played in multiple games when the institution (in the form of the coach) was aware of their receiving improper benefits. OSU would likely have to vacate the wins and suspend them for improper benefits.
You're right about Pearl; I also hope you're right about Pryor and Co. Tressel deserves to lose his credibility if this is all true, and the players deserve to lose their eligibility.
... don't give a shit!
Honey badger RULES!
It sounds like it may be more than a slap on the wrist. Smith is apparently part of the NCAA Tournament selection comittee and had a bunch of things scheduled for today (meetings with others on the comittee etc.) but has scrapped that to head back to Columbus from NYC. I read the article on the Detroit News site someone with better computer skills can probably embed. Maybe this time where there's smoke there's fire
Absolutely nothing significant will come out of this. Slap on the wrist for Tressell, at the very most (like a one-game suspension or something).
It will take the NCAA literally hauling Tressel off to some kind of collegiate sports jail for OSU to not allow him to be their coach. They'll probably suspend him ......until Monday.
Enjoy the long weekend Tress!
Retweeted by chengelis - According to the Columbus Dispatch, OSU has reported 375 violations to the NCAA since 2000, more than any other FBS team .
But (a) that's a LOT of violations, (2) what good is reporting minor transgressions, if you don't report the major ones, and (d) it almost looks worse when that he didn't report these; he *(arguably) deviated from his normal mode of conduct when confronted with this particularly hot potato.
a, 2, d? I'm seeing a disconnect here, Blue.
This young man's girlfriend was once described as "woof"
If a2d was a joke, it went completely over my head. What movie/book/show was it?
Buzz McCallister, listing the reasons why he wasn't worried about Kevin:
"A, I'm not that lucky. Two, we use smoke detectors and D, we live on the most boring street in the whole United States of America, where nothing even remotely dangerous will ever happen. Period."
Wow. Self negged for missing a Home Alone reference. Just...wow.
But I bet you can't see the dead bodies that old man Marley keeps in the garbage can full of salt.
for srs??? That's 30 something every year. Unless I am missing some joke here, that is stunning.
Wow. Isn't Eleven Warriors their big blog? I would say this is as close to a reliable source as we have at this point.
Pretty comparable to MGo (except they suck, obviously and we don't). But this is pretty solid. I believe they were the first to break the details of the TatGate violations.
This is awesome.
Its probably true but I guarantee he's on that sideline come Labor Day weekend this fall. Maybe they'll do something ALMOST meaningful like keep him out of spring practice.
Lets not kid ourselves here, a vast majority of programs aren't going to do anything significant to a successful coach until the NCAA forces them to short of the coach causing physical damage to a player, child, family member etc.
Hint: watch on mute.
If that is true, then shit is getting real. If that goes down, then Tressel is falling on the sword to prevent the whole program and athletic department from being leveled.
I've been lurking over there enjoying the sadness/shame and confusion for most of the day.
Hire Rich Rod
If you think it's bad losing to the sweatervest, can you imagine losing to a coach we fired? Tempt not the fates...
Their offense would do diddly against Mattison's defense and Denard would roll up 500 yards against OSU playing 3-3-5. I don't see how we lose.
The last thing I want, besides losing to Ohio State, is losing to Ohio State coached by a former Michigan head coach. That would be awful, especially given that Michigan let him go under the rationale that he was not good enough.
I Doubt that anyone would have to ask
RR if he "Gets" the Rivalry with the
school that Shall Not Be Named.
Please please please let this be what Colin Cowherd was referring to.
Smith will announce that Tressel will be fired immediately and Urban Meyer will be named the next HC.
We will learn later that Urban Meyer was the unnamed "source" who ratted out JT.
Haha, you know that even if nothing substantial happens to Tressel, the Urban Meyer rumors have got to be starting already. I wonder how the fan base would react to playing the style of football they were certain wouldn't work in the B1G...
If the Lane Kiffin rumors started
"Tressel's contract, which pays him an estimated $3.5 million per season, requires that he report any — the word "any" is underlined in the contract — possible rules or legal infractions immediately."
So even if Tressel self-investigated this and thought it was untrue, he could still be fired for not telling OSU compliance about it.
Not that they would fire him. I can't wait to see the OSU AD spin this. Its going to make me sick.
you realists threw cold water on them before I could even get tingly. Still, even seeing that virtuous little boy demeanor sullied for a second may be worth something.
The word "could" leaves a lot of room in that statement - it makes it pretty much meaningless, in fact.
I would love to see the program blow-up, and would love it even more if the suspended players who promised to return to OSU entered the supplemental NFL draft :)
"So...will the OSU band dot the " i " in 'infractions'???"
Well played, random internet user.
Could this mean that the guy who wrote this article may have been on to something but only had a few pieces of a puzzle that didn't make sense on their own? He may not have known what he was really looking at at the time...
I'd think it's plausible that what he heard were the beginning rumblings of this but he only had bits and pieces- during that time, there may have been an OSU effort to squash anything that could come out about it and he eventually had to retract his prediction...
It could be that it just took a few months for the info to trickle out to connect all the dots- maybe the guy was right and didn't even know it...
I think that dude might be on the Ohio DHS “terrorist” watch list. He may join this guy on the never buy a beer in Michigan list.
Was looking at potential successors on the OSU Football Coaching Staff page. EMPTY!
Luke Fickell is a serious candidate, IF, and this is a big IF, Tressel is fired/forced to resign.
Personally, I'll believe it when it happens. Regardless of what people on here thinks of Tressel's integrity, I think most would admit he isn't stupid enough to try and cover up something like this. I'd have thought Michigan fans would be more cautious about jumping the gun after their NCAA experiences over the last few years.
Don't begrude us too much. I think most UM fans here, really, aren't buying into this story too much at this point. Answers will (hopefully) come in the near future and we can reserve full judgement until then. But after the shit that UM has been dragged through over the past few years, it's just maybe a little entertaining to see the shoe on the other foot, and watch another high profile program squirm.
I just like the misery of others like my signature line.
It gets even better if you click on Tressel's bio:
"The numbers on Jim Tressel are just as straightforward as the man himself....While fans fantasize that pomp and circumstance surround one of the most accomplished figures in college football, Tressel is much more “what you see is what you get.”"
Or is it....
OP...please remove the "OT" on your title
Is that in South America?
I don't know if they'd want him. Dantonio's 55 and not that accomplished overall.
He is at a god-like status down in C-bus and they will rally around him until the last possible second. My family has several tOSU grads and they are all smart, successful people but they believe everything is a conspiracy against the program because they are too successful. They truly believe that it is all lies.
This isn't breaking news but Jim Tressel is scheduled to hold a book signing tonight at Barnes & Noble on High Street.
If anyone reading this is planning to attend... don't. I just called and the book signing has been postponed.
JT must have more pressing matters.
Anyone have a good alternative explanaition for why the 2011 - 12 football coaching staff page is blank?
I guess it could have been blank yesterday too...
The coaches pages on the website were obviously taken down because their email boxes are being bombarded with spam and garbage. This is standard procedure in times of crisis.
Would not be sad to see him leave.
He has been withholding this information for 310 DAYS. Maybe he should have a haltime speech at the BTT to get the crowd revved up.
The heat only really got turned up on USC once everyone realized they weren't going to win the PAC-10 and weren't going to a BCS bowl.
Watch: If OSU stumbles out the gate, goes 3-2 while their main guys are suspended, then ends up something like 8-4, 7-5, the NCAA will ratchet things up quickly. Once there isn't a Sugar Bowl TV rating on the line, there will be no more OSU protection.
with NCAA sanctions. USC isn't reducing its recruiting at all and OSU will not get hit hard. The NCAA already proved they want OSU at or near the top. They need that presence until UM gets back to national contention. Pryor and company sitting out the entire season would be funny though.
The NCAA already proved they want OSU at or near the top.
How? By banning Maurice Clarett for life? By suspending several key players for the first five games of 2011?
Some of you guys have taken on a Little Brother mentality toward OSU. It's ridiculous.
and hire Urban. I had a nightmare about this a few months ago when the rumor was Tressellsnuff was looking into "The League" for employment. Maybe he wants to go! Does this qualify as "little brother" syndrome? If so forgive me...
that OSU has proposed self-punishment to the NCAA, to wit, Tressel will have to run the stadium steps every other month for one year, dot the "I" in O-H-I-O at the Michigan game while wearing a red diaper with a big Bucknut on his ass, and lick the tattoos off the offending players. The NCAA is taking this proposal under advisement.
Rich Rod is available?
he will be suspended for a year, but he will be able to coach games and practices and such, and recruit. this will set a another good example for the suspended players who get to play in bowl games.
I can see Tressel getting fired for the simple reason that it would fullfill the prophecy of the One who would bring balance to the force (Hoke) in spite of poor ol' Rich Rod. Seriously, what else could enrage Rich Rod even more than Hoke rolling over OSU because they have a patchwork team w/o Maize 'n Blue kryptonite wearing a sweater vest and glasses on the sideline? I can see him getting canned just to spite Rich because everything has pointed to the stars aligning for MAN football. and of course touching kids everyday
Here's Gene Smith:
"JIMMY, YOU GO TO YOUR ROOM AND THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU DID!"
It seems weird to me that they're moving so fast. It's a one-source rumor, right, and barely a day old?
I expected we'd see more "leaks" and speculation and unnamed sources confirming and denying each and every aspect of the story, while OSU bided its time to (a) do some of its own investigation, (2) see if the dust settles and/or (III) put together a PR gameplan to deal with the fallout, legitimate or otherwise.
