That being said, I really don't care, and will still be standing in line well ahead of time to see the first showing. Why? Because its frickin Star Wars.
Samesies.

I saw the first one (IV) 16 weeks in a row in the theater, every Friday night. Loved it in a way only a 7th grade girl could. But I'm not looking forward to seeing Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill reprise their roles. She has too much baggage now as Debbie Reynolds' unhinged daughter (though she is a funny writer) and he looks like a barfly who's spent all morning in a dark bar. He used to be hot hot hot.

He did have that pretty bad car accident, honestly the change in his appearance from A New Hope to Empire is pretty stunning.

Star Wars is my favorite set of movies of all time (all six), but I'm really upset that they will have the trio from episodes 4-6 in this movie. We don't need to see the Skywalker thing anymore. We got six movies with that family and it was great, don't get me wrong, but I think we need something fresh. I will, of course, still see this movie.
I don't think the Skywalkers will be that big in the storyline. Of Harrison Ford, Carrie Fischer and Mark Hammill, only Ford is believed to have a major role. One or two of his kids might have a big role, but I don't think the old cast is going to be the center. I think they'll kill off Han Solo to show that it's a new era.
I am not excited at all, and I have figured out that the reason that I'm not excited is because I was actually hoping that Disney would choose to remake Episodes I-III instead and declare the George Lucas versions to be non-canon. I would much rather see a competent telling of the fall of the old Reublic and Darth Vader's origin story than a new story that doesn't have much of a reason to exist. I have seen enough of JJ Abrams's work to know that I'll probably get something at the midpoint between a Michael Bay movie and the original trilogy. I'll take it, I guess, but that doesn't excite me either.
The casting looks to me like a calculated combination of hipster appeal to draw in the under 30 crowd (e.g. Adam from Girls) and nostalgia appeal (Fisher, Hamil, and Ford). How useful is Max von Sydow going to be at the age of 85? The only one that gets me interested is Andy Serkis, who I really like.
I'm kinda of with you. I have a different feeling towards this trilogy than I did when the prequel trilogy came out and when I was first introduced to the original trilogy. And as you said, this trilogy is trying to meet all parties in the middle - some fresh faces and characters to bring in the cynics, some old characters or ones with connections to old characters to satisfy the fanboys. I don't think it'll be great, but I don't think it'll be a disaster.
One thing for sure, Disney will milk this franchise for all its worth and it will eventually become a joke (though the prequel trilogy may have done that). I'm kind of upset that they're doing character centric movies in between the trilogies.
I'm a big SW junkie, read 50+ novels of the EU and I'm always hungry for more from SW. So I'll see the movies and enjoy them because they're in a universe I love. But it's just going to be different.

As an expanded universe fan, how do you feel about the threats to continuity that the new movies pose? I haven't read the books myself, but one of my good friends is a huge fan of them, and is furious with the direction the new movies are shaping up in. Curious for another take on that.
The people who have become highly invested in the extended universe are going to have to accept that it's not going to be consistent. It's just not practical.
There had already been a few instances where a show/book broke from a storyline that was thought to be canon. I can appreciate the EU for what it is, but I never expected the movies to be what was previously considered SW canon. It was always going to break away from it because it would have been hard to adapt one of the book trilogies and it would have been even harder to create a new story that fit somewhere in between the books of the EU. It was just easier to create a story without restraints. And I get that. I don't feel like I wasted my time reading those other books.
