OT: New Orleans Pelicans???

The New Orleans Hornets are expected to become the New Orleans Pelicans, perhaps as early as the 2013-14 season, according to a Yahoo! Sports report.

Yahoo! Sports, citing numerous sources, reports the team also considered Krewe and Brass as potential nicknames.

LINK  Well I must say, Pelicans is an upgrade over Krewe and Brass.

Since I'm based in Nola, I feel like I ought to chime in. Krewe and Brass are great, IMHO. Pelicans is kind of lame. There is a reason the state bird is the pelican. The legend is that if food is scarce, a mother pelican will use her bill and cut open her own breast, then feed the blood to her baby pelicans. That's why on the state flag you often see the blood drops on the pelican. The symbol doesn't really apply to basketball, and I think Krewe is much better fitting.

Krewe might be cool for New Orleansers (New Orleansites?  Nolans?  The hell if I know) but nobody else would've got it, honestly.  I've even been there twice and spent two years working with a guy who graduated from Tulane and loved telling Mardi Gras stories and I never, ever heard the word until today.  If I were from Nola I'd feel lucky for not having to forever explain to scoffing out-of-towners why my basketball team's new name is not in fact best suited for the D-League, which is what 90% of folks would've assumed.

But I'd also like the New Orleans Professor Longhairs.

Logically, they'd be called the Jazz, and I bet Utah would give the name up if they could be called the Utah Fightin' Mormons.
