OT: New career options for Matt Millen

Submitted by crg on

Earlier today I decided to watch the replay of the 2015 UM vs Northwestern game (still good stuff) and, despite knowing the positive outcome of the game, the experience was still tainted by having Millen do the color commentary.  This led to an interesting line of thought - what job should we (as in society) encourage/force Millen into which will have the most positive outcome for us all?  I was thinking we could somehow insert him into the MSU sports network such that only their fans will be listening to him - whether he drives them (and recruits, boosters, etc.) away from the program or they use their couch fires to guide an angry mob to his broadcast booth, it's a win-win.

He's incredibly good at persuading people that he is fit for sports jobs. I say Rutgers AD because lolRutgers. Even though his comments were against our opponents, I didn't feel good about him just insulting 18-22 year olds on TV. It wasn't criticism, it was insults. Not a good look.

On color. As much as I hate him for ruining the Lions (even further), the dude is pretty good when it comes to the Xs and Os of football. He's just fine as a color dude on BTN.

Nobody will dispute that he knows the X's and O's of a game, or that he's a decent color guy.  That's why he was pulled from the booth for the Lions job, afterall.  But, with the distaste of the Lions still fresh, nobody wants to see or hear him anywhere near Michigan sports.  He would be booed out of Ford Field, rightfully, and should be booed out of the Big House, too.  Hell, even Sparty should boo him the hell out of that hell hole they call home.  He should not be allowed back in Michigan.

I lost all respect I might have ever had for him, and it turns my stomach to have to listen to him call a UM game.  Its those times that I wish the strongest for Ufer again.  (People since him may be good in thier own right, but having heard the Master live - there is no replacement.  Now stay off my lawn!)

I tend to agree with you about grudges, but Millen makes it so easy to hate him still!  What he did to the Lions should be criminal (what Ford Sr did in keeping Millen for so long should also be criminal).  What really galls me about it is the arrogance he continues to show about his time in Detroit.  He still thinks he did a good job, and had the team moving in the right direction.  If he could man-up and admit he performed poorly, I could forgive him and enjoy his color commentary again.

All it takes is a 'Hey man, I thought I could do better.  Things didn't work out, but I tried hard, I did.  I stayed so long because I thought I could fix it.  It didn't work out, but I wish it had...'

But he can't even say that!  The one 'apololgy' he did say during a game was in jest, and he laughed after he said it.  Screw him.  Screw anyone that can't admit thier mistakes.  If people think they are so perfect, I don't want to be around them.

His commentary during games is at best average. More often he just calls out the most obvious actions on the field while offering no real added value to the discussion. There are others who are worse, but not many that are getting the pay he is.

While broadcasting a Buccaneers game, Matt Millen had this to say: "It was a little bit of a tactical error on my part. I had this fleeting dream that I thought maybe I could run a team," Millen jokingly said. "Sorry Detroit, it didn't quite work out."

As much as I hate Millen for what he did to the Lions, I actually kind of enjoyed his color commentary for the Tate Forcier show against Notre Dame. Or maybe I was so ecstatic about the outcome that I was being overly generous in regards to him.
