DG is a fortune 100 company with an incredibly generous compensation package (at least for corporate employees). So, maybe the gifts wouldn't be all that bad.
Still enjoyed your comment, though.

The owners live near me and their corporate employees rave about the culture and the generosity. That place is awesome if you're in a pinch and need something odd.

I lived in Nashville until about 3 years ago - did you ever go to the alumni events?

are great! There is a huge rock waterfall out front with a bunch of bear statues. Momma bears and cubs - there is on cub on the roof! Oooozes money.
Family Dollar is the exact opposite - the carpeting in the building is worn out an old.

A Family Dollar opened about two years ago in Ypsi, just east of Downtown.
Even though it's basically brand new, it already looks like it's a couple decades old and fits in just fine (unfortunately) with the rest of the hard-scrabble, run down buildings that are its neighbors.

I honestly wonder which is the better marketing strategy. If I'm shopping at a dollar store I'm not sure I want to see overt signs that the business is exceptionally profitable.

If getting an invite to the Dolar General Bowl doesn't instil pride in a program, then I don't know what will.

but that swag tho...

Who cares. I've long ago accepted that Bowl Games will have inane sponsors. Whatever. This is just a new B-level brand taking over a previously B-level branded bowl game. It's not like a bowl game has been added, which is what I was led to believe by the title.
August 17th, 2016 at 12:49 PM ^
I'm right there with you on the bowl sponsorships; I don't care anymore.

So when does Brandon start the Toys R Us Bowl?
August 17th, 2016 at 2:17 PM ^
Is that a real thing?

Yeah, there's a reason many of these sponsors keep re-upping. I know I went to BWW at least twice between the OSU and Florida games because it was on the top of my mind.

My guess: a tire company.
(...googles...)
Nope. They sell "Modern. Southern." clothing, shoes and more.

As a reference, State Farm has 19,000 offices, McDonalds has 15,000 restaurants, and Walgreens is under 8,000 stores.

that is definitely a key component of the Dollar General business model.
And it has worked. Still plenty of places in America that are (1) too small for a Wal*Mart, but (2) have enough population to support a demand for everyday items.

These stores - Family Dollar, etc - flourished in the economic decline of 08-09 too. And they've sort of stuck now
August 17th, 2016 at 4:18 PM ^
8 years ago --- the dollar stores, while a place they obviously sold a small percentage of their product, were not of the same mportance to them vs. the Grocery/Drug/Club/Mass retailer channels.
That has definitely changed. They now view the Dollar channel on a near-equal footing.

just for the concessions!!!

I've never seen a Dollar General ad, but there's no way they can be worse than GoDaddy ads.

My company declined the opportunity to sponsor that very same Bowl game in Mobile.
It was only something like $250,000 too. Our firm's founder said he didn't want to be stuck in Mobile, AL on December 29th in freezing rain holding some oversized check in front of 17,000 people.
lol

Yes.
The Bowl game has been around for a while and has changed sponsors a few times. Was the GMAC Bowl.

I was at that game ...we all thought it was a joke. But funnier than the monkeys riding the border collies was the guy who'd trained them!
He spoke before the 'thing' and said it was his life 'dream come true' and sounded exactly like Pedro from Napoleon Dynamite.
