OT: New Book about HS Football in The Muck

Submitted by EGD on

Was just browsing through some titles on Amazon.com and came across Muck City by Bryan Mealer (no apparent relation to Elliot & Brock), which was just released Oct. 23, 2012.  It apparently centers on high school football in Belle Glade, Florida, which is about eight miles from Pahokee (and also in the muck).  I have to wait 5-7 days for my copy to arrive, but can promise an mgobookreport after that (if nobody beats me to it).  Here's a LINK to the amazon page for anyone else who wants to check it out.

I'm not sure.  The two main players it appears to follow are Mario Rowley and Kelvin Benjamin, who were 2011 kids.  Richard Ash is the most recent UM signee from that area and he was class of 2010, but I don't know how far back the author goes.

I am speaking the truth. we used to have school delays for muck storms. it was like fog only darker.(there i got to throw a Fred Jackson in there).  We also used to have muck fires.

Edit: Here is a link to the muck in our area. (just so you know its true, and unfortunately not a joke.) http://www.h-net.org/reviews/showrev.php?id=5228

But if you still have access to a .edu account, the $39 student prime is well worth it if you do a decent amount of shopping online. Two-day shipping and rentable books/movies. So glad I forwarded my umich account so I can still do stuff like this.

Well, ordinarily I would have downloaded the book to my Kindle.  But I signed up for the Amazon "Vine" program a while back, so they send me free stuff on the condition that I post reviews of it.  This book I ordered through the Vine program, so I have to wait for the hard copy and don't get to alter the shipping options.

Will we ever get anymore kids from down there, or is that pipeline closed?  I know tiny little fast guys aren't our thing anymore, but they showed themselves well up here.  I'll miss them.
