The first episode is TERRIBLE.

I mean...really, really bad. Even if you're totally into tits.

The saving grace is that the show gets a LOT better about halfway through Episode 2, and it's a wild (and enjoyable) ride all the way to the season finale.

I binged on that, told my parents and they did the same. Problem is I got distracted after episode 8 or so by Breaking Bad (never bothered to watch it). Now I'm hooked on that... except I am waiting for the wife to catch up.

What's Orange rate on 'Tits Plus' scale?

Is the show that good, or is it Laura Prepon's tits that really keep you coming back week after week?

Case in point: watch Entourage years later, and it's pretty obvious the show was never that good. On the "Tits Plus" scale I just made up, Entourage qualifies for a rating because deep down (or maybe not that deep down) you really only ever watched for the tits; and though you may have tried to convince yourself or other people (your mom) that the show was actually more awesome than tits, in reality nothing else could ever carry the show for lack of tits.

In other words, while you're watching Baywatch with nipples, the "Tits Plus" factor gives you a scale for whether an argument can be adopted that you're not purely in it for puerile reasons.

So, Entourage had the whole bromance/machismo thing; but once they put it on TBS or whatever, who the F watched it? On a Tits Plus scale of 1-10, Entourage is like a TP2; with 2 being the show's quality outside of tits that reasonably keeps you going back.

How does Orange rate? To exemplify the utility of this rating system, in order to watch with my fiance, who appreciates a good set of tits (but not enough to watch a show week after week just because), assume I need a score of TP5 to make it a show we can watch together with regularity.

I'm honestly curious, and I'd like to hear your opinion on other HBO shows; Game of Thrones, Boarwalk Empire, Californication, Dexter, Hemlock Grove, True Blood, etc.

Thanks.

MITT

"Mitt" was just released on Netflix and is very interesting.  Whether you were for or against Mitt doesn't matter, because it's a pretty interesting documentary to see him and his family while on the campaign trail, and how brutal the trail can be.

Also, Mitt was just on Jimmy Fallon's show the other night, "Slow Jamming The News"

Well, the problem was no one

Well, the problem was no one saw entire-series home video releases for TV shows as a possibility when the show was made in the late 80s-early 90s. Back then, you'd only get a "Best of" or few-key-episode VHS release, but not much more than that. Music rights were usually negotiated for on-air and syndication broadcasts only.

So as far as music is concerned, while other shows are able to get around it because they have relatively few instances to renegotiate licensing, The Wonder Years literally has hundreds of songs to renegotiate. It was way more music-centered than just about any other show made before Glee. So as far as physical media is concerned, the only way The Wonder Years will ever be released is if they substituted much (or all) of the music, and there seems to be little interest in doing so. They're not going to do what MTV has done with Daria, and rerelease the show with entirely new, generic music.

And after looking into it based on your post, they replaced not only the Joe Cocker theme song, but also several high-profile songs (Hendrix, The Doors) for the Amazon and Netflix streaming. So, yes, it's not all there even now.

Loved that show, sad about the music issues

My older brother and I were way into that show, during original airings he and I were about the same ages as the Wayne and Kevin characters respectively.  Our favorite HS teacher loved it too, he came of age in the same era as the Kevin character.  The soundtrack CD introduced us to the Indigo Girls (they covered "Get Together") a few years before we would have heard of them from lesbian fans in Ann Arbor.  Sad about the reality of Daria too, that was a great show.

Wonder Years is an all-time

Wonder Years is an all-time favorite. It's amazing to me how it was set in the 60's, yet so much of it rings true about growing up in the suburbs in the 90's just the same.

Nostalgic And Mad...

One thing that I found recently that makes me rather nostalgic and mad (only because I foolishly bought the DVD compilations of these shows years ago) is series like "Cheers", "MacGyver", "The A-Team" and few others ("Star Trek" and "Star Trek: TNG" as well) , as well as some of my favorite BBC stuff like "Black Adder" and "Fawlty Towers" and the UK version of "The Office".

Yep. One of the best shows ever and those idiots at Fox stopped it after one season.  There are just soooo many good quotes from that show and the acting is superb.  Having a hot prostiute on board don't hurt either!

Black Books and Spaced are way better than The IT Crowd if you're looking for Brittish comedies.

EDIT* Of course Netflix took both off around 2 weeks ago.... Just steal them like everyone else on a torrent site. You won't be disappointed.

Sherlock is awesome! There's also The Killing and The Fall (Gillian Anderson in her sexy maturity). Both are murder mystery/crime thrillers that are originally European. Dutch remade American and Irish respectively. There's so much good stuff on Netflix that I'd cancel DirecTV if not for sports. Also The IT Crowd.

Orphan Black

I'm not sure if it's available on netflix streaming but Orphan Black is amazing. 1st season was 10 episodes so very easy to binge-watch it. If not on netflix I'm sure you can find a torrent of it. Season 2 starts on BBC America in April. I can't recommend that show enough.

I strongly recommend Memento and In Bruges, if you haven't seen either. I also enjoyed Cocaine Cowboys, Monsters (directed by the same guy who is doing the Godzilla reboot), and Equilibrium, which features a pre-Dark Knight Christian Bale. I remembered renting it several years ago after he was cast and was pleasantly surprised.

We watched Drinking Buddies

We watched Drinking Buddies one night to kill some time.  It was enjoyable.  I think most of the dialogue was improvised adding to the realism in the movie.

After watching Drinking Buddies, Netflix suggested Somm.  It's a documentary about four guys attempting to become Master Sommeliers.  It's worth a watch if you have any interest in wine.

Really like Freaks & Geeks

Really like Freaks & Geeks and Undeclared when it comes to TV shows. Wish those would have lasted longer on air.

Really enjoyed World's Greatest Dad (movie) starring Robin Williams. He's a single dad, english teacher and struggling aspiring writer. His son is a complete jackass and pervert and kills himself while asphyxiating himself during masterbation. Robin Williams pens a suicide note and makes it look like his son killed himself, as well as forging a diary from his son which becomes a big hit. It's a pretty funny flick, but is also pretty thought provoking IMO.

At least season 1.

Season 2 was a mess. But, in fairness, as far as I understand, there was originally supposed to be a Season 3...

In any event, the last episode of Season 2, the de facto series finale, IS a very, very good one, so it's worth the struggle to slog through the entirety of the series to reach that point.

Season 2 starts out strong, hits a really rough patch in the middle of the season with some odd and shallow plot lines, but it ends fantastically. The series finale is one of the most chilling hours of television I have ever witnessed.

Twin Peaks

There was recently an interview on avclub.com with Sherilyn Fenn (actress who played Audrey Horne).  Billy Zane and Heather Graham's roles (which totally sucked the life out of season 2) were created because Lara Flynn Boyle was dating Kyle Machlachlan and was jealous of  the relationship of "Cooper and Audrey."  There's always been a lot of whispers of behind the scenes issues during season 2, not the least of which was getting cancelled.

Incidentally, I named my dog Special Agent Dale Cooper.  And Audrey Horne was smoking.

Documentaries & BBC series

Most of the 30 for 30 docs are available for streaming.  I tend to watch a lot of the British TV series, such as "MI-5," the Poirot & Marple mysteries, etc., as they're just nice to have on in the background while I'm working around the house.  In my queue, but haven't started yet, because I want to devote my full attention to it, is "Twin Peaks."

I second the recommendation of "The Fall," and would add "Prime Suspect" (the original with Helen Mirren), "Inspector Lynley," "George Gentley" and "Foyle's War" if you like mysteries.

Since there are a lot of Detroit (and Michigan people) on here, you should check out the Doc called A Band Called Death.   About 3 black brothers from inner city Detroit that started a Punk rock band in the 70s.   2 Brothers are still alive today and has interviews with their sons and stuff.  Pretty interesting as their music was pretty damn good too.

Another documentary on Netflix for the Detroit folks on here (as well as others) is 'Burn'. It follows a company of firefighters on the Eastside.

Lilyhammer

If you don't mind your tv shows with 50% subtitles, it's HILARIOUS. It stars Steven van Zandt and it's about a mafia guy that has to move to norway. Highly recommended. And like most people have said, House of Cards and Orange is the New Black are amazing.

PBS Aurelio Zen Mystery Series

They're probably available on Netflix, but you can seen them on YouTube: Cabal, Vendetta and Ratking.  They're fabulous, set in Italy, very compelling, sophisticated, complex and edgy. You may have to watch each episode twice.  I haven't read the books on which they're based, but I'll do it sometime soon.

Apparently they cost so much to produce that the second season was not produced AFAIK.

Lillehammer.  Watch it...Just

Lillehammer.  Watch it...Just do it.

The Killing.  Underrated.  It's slow but in a good way.  i.e. the murder doesn't get solved in one unrealistic episode but it's no slow in that plenty happens each episode and has one on edge often.  Great acting, storyline, plots, twists.  Of course it's based off of a Swedish show but that likely makes it all the better.

Dirty Wars.  Check it out.  A documentary about....well, yea.

Manhatten for a Woody Allen flick.

Longmire is okay to kill some time...40 minute episodes about crime out West.  Good acting but unlike the above each episode is a new crime.  Interesting enough.

Maron.  Comedian Mark Maron doin a show.  Funny shit

Louie if you've never watched it.  Best comedian and a damn good actor I have to say.

Brew Masters.  Dogfish Head brewery dude does a show about making cool/weird beers and of course the everyday happenings at a big micro/craft brewery.

Hard Eight.  Movie.

Crystal Fairy.  Check it out.  Michael Cera is in it.  If it sounds interesting enough by the brief description, pull the trigger, I'd recommend it.

The Silence.  Pretty interesting mystery about missing girls, years apart.  Swedish I think...so it's good.

Luther is very good too as others have said (British); crime/murder/detective show.  I also like Anika Bengston, a Swedish crime show.

Wish You Were Here.  Drama.  Good flick.  Good plot twists and a realistic story.

The Ninth Gate.  Johnny Depp yo, doing his thing.  Good suspense/thriller.

As for new movies, I haven't seen Wolf of Wall Street or American Hustle (though by my tastes I can already tell I'll like WoWS more), but check out Dallas Buyers' Club when you can.  Awesome.

I'm  a sucker for scifi based

I'm  a sucker for scifi based series:

Warehouse 13 - ridiculous and intelligent at the same time.  The actor chemistry is amazing.

Lost - yeah it doesn't answer all the questions, but its a hell of a ride.

Dollhouse - Joss Whedon - watch it love it...

Firfely - Whedon again - love it...

Lost Girl - really amazing show - totally surprised me how it snuck up on me.

Luther - another vote from me - Idris Elba is an amazing actor

Torchwood - only the first 3 seasons before Starz took over, but a fun clever show - if you like Dr Who you'll like Torchwood

Asylum - crazy good acting and show - spooky and each season its own self contained show.

Miscellaneous watches - Jericho, Alias, Nikita, Blue Mountain State, Continuum, Dr. Who, Prison Brea, The League, Chuck, etc...

I could go on an on, but that is the top of my TVlsit

Here's some of my recent favorites...

Disclaimer: I believe all of these are available on Netflix, but my apologies if one or two of them is not, and is on Amazon Prime instead. I can't keep them all straight.

Primer (as mentioned above already) -- a low-budget (but very effective) ride into the not-so-glamorous effects of time-travel. Yeah, this ain't Back To The Future, here.

Timecrimes -- And if you liked Primer, give this a try. IMO, it's even better. It's in Spanish, with English subtitles -- but don't let that scare you away. The first few minutes, you'll be like, "...the fuck...?" but stick with it. Trust me on this one; this movie has a great payoff.

Let The Right One In -- The best vampire movie I've ever seen. But be sure to watch the original (in Swedish, with English subtitles), and not the English-version remake.

Kenny -- An Australian "mockumentary" about a guy in the portable toilet rental company business. Yes, seriously. It's got a lot of heart, and the central character, Kenny, has an outlook on life that more people should embrace. One word of advice, though: watch it with the subtitles on, unless you're a native Australian. There's a lot of good dialog and nuanced language in there, easy to miss for a Yank.

The Killing (TV series) -- This 3-season TV series originally aired on AMC, and I watched it in its original run. An enjoyable, atmospheric murder mystery, with some really, really strong acting.

Room 237 -- A documentary about the hidden messages and meanings in the film The Shining, and specifically, about the mad genius of Stanley Kubrick. I found myself sarcastically saying, "Oh yeah, sure...right" at several points throughout, followed minutes later by "Holy shit..." Sure, it may be ALL bullshit, but I wanted to line up and buy that bullshit (with an extended warranty + undercoating) after watching this movie. That's all I'm gonna say about this one. :-)

13 Assassins -- Disclaimer: I'm not into these kinds of movies, at all. Meaning, stylized Japanese samurai films. But damn...this is just an impressive and very enjoyable movie. Everything looks amazing, and the fight sequences are incredible. I really enjoyed this one, MUCH more than I thought I would.

Hardly a hidden diamond in the rough, but Dexter is certainly worth watching if you have a lot of time.  If you like the show, I've found it's sometimes easier to pause in the middle of an episode rather than deal with the cliffhanger they sometimes throw in at the end of an episode.

The worst season was with Olmos and Hanks.

It could have been one of the best. But...without spoiling anything...the "you didn't see that coming" moment, and its aftermath, proved to be an absolutely terrible idea. If they were going to go the route they did (which was completely stupid, but again, no spoilers) they should have swapped the roles of the characters. They had Olmos, a terrific actor, and they pretty much wasted their opportunities with him.

I hated this season so much that I almost completely abandoned the show at this point.

darkest and funniest series ever

'League of Gentlemen' - this is a British comedy series that you really have to be a little sick and twisted to really appreciate. If you don't like extremely dark humor, this is not for you...

I lived in London when it originally aired and bought the UK DVDs and kept an old DVD player that was 'cracked' to be able to play DVDs from any region around for several years...just to be able to play them. Was delighted when it showed up on Netflix.

Better write-up here than i can give it http://voices.yahoo.com/the-league-gentlemen-monty-python-meets-alfred-1609895.html

It was a stage show for several years first, so the characters and stories were refined over a long period before going onto TV and for it requires repeated viewing to catch all the humor as some is quite subtle and there is just a lot of complexity to the characters and plots

If you don't get why a butcher shop called 'H. Briss & Sons' is funny, maybe take a pass on this.

(not to be confused with movie 'League of Extraordinary Gentlemen')

This show has been on for 6 years, so may not be much of a hidden gem - Sons of Anarchy.  I say it because there's quite a bit of people that haven't seen it,  as they are like me who originally didn't watch it because I can't relate to Harley fanatics who are outlaws.  The show is solid all-around, though- great writing, great acting, original plot ideas, and a lot of twist and turns that you don't see coming, and the show has never really lost its touch after 6 seasons.  I recommend you give it a try and at least watch the first season.

Addendum.

In The Loop -- This movie bills itself as a comedy...but I gotta say, it probably rings fairly true as to how politics work and huge decisions are made. In any event, it's a highly enjoyable and very-well acted film. Strongly recommended.
