2 minutes in and tits galore. She was not impressed.
my wife likes boobs, at least that's what she said before we got married. I think she deceived me.
She thinks hers are better? If that's true I envy you.
I mean...really, really bad. Even if you're totally into tits.
The saving grace is that the show gets a LOT better about halfway through Episode 2, and it's a wild (and enjoyable) ride all the way to the season finale.
Yes good show.
Just started watching and I am really struggling not to go on an all-out binge.
I binged on that, told my parents and they did the same. Problem is I got distracted after episode 8 or so by Breaking Bad (never bothered to watch it). Now I'm hooked on that... except I am waiting for the wife to catch up.
I can't wait for season 2 of House of Cards.
Also if you have HBO or HBO Go, I just started watching True Detective and it is fantastic.
According to IMDB the new season will be available Feb 14.
Thanks! IIRC the first season was uploaded right after the superbowl.
That is a mesmerizing show!
I was up until 5 a.m. watching all of Orange is the New Black. Worth it!
Is the show that good, or is it Laura Prepon's tits that really keep you coming back week after week?
Case in point: watch Entourage years later, and it's pretty obvious the show was never that good. On the "Tits Plus" scale I just made up, Entourage qualifies for a rating because deep down (or maybe not that deep down) you really only ever watched for the tits; and though you may have tried to convince yourself or other people (your mom) that the show was actually more awesome than tits, in reality nothing else could ever carry the show for lack of tits.
In other words, while you're watching Baywatch with nipples, the "Tits Plus" factor gives you a scale for whether an argument can be adopted that you're not purely in it for puerile reasons.
So, Entourage had the whole bromance/machismo thing; but once they put it on TBS or whatever, who the F watched it? On a Tits Plus scale of 1-10, Entourage is like a TP2; with 2 being the show's quality outside of tits that reasonably keeps you going back.
How does Orange rate? To exemplify the utility of this rating system, in order to watch with my fiance, who appreciates a good set of tits (but not enough to watch a show week after week just because), assume I need a score of TP5 to make it a show we can watch together with regularity.
I'm honestly curious, and I'd like to hear your opinion on other HBO shows; Game of Thrones, Boarwalk Empire, Californication, Dexter, Hemlock Grove, True Blood, etc.
Thanks.
"Mitt" was just released on Netflix and is very interesting. Whether you were for or against Mitt doesn't matter, because it's a pretty interesting documentary to see him and his family while on the campaign trail, and how brutal the trail can be.
Also, Mitt was just on Jimmy Fallon's show the other night, "Slow Jamming The News"
Just watched this today, it's fantastic. Doesn't matter whether you like him or not, it's a really unique view inside his campaign experience and everyone should see it.
This is why I started this thread. I have noticed this on my menu and would have never watched it.
Restrepo.
For those who don't know this is a documentary about 2 journalists who embedded themselves with a team of Army Rangers at one of the most dangerous outposts in Afghanistan's Korengal (sp?) Valley.
It was incredible.
this
In my queue. Good to hear you liked it.
I had surgery in December and was off work for about four weeks. Watched all 115 episodes of the Wonder Years. Winnie is a little whore. Always going steady with a different guy.
Haha all 115! Did you lose your mind after?
Didn't lose my mind, but a damn speck of dust in my eye caused me to get all teary. I'm telling you it was the dust guys.
The narrator is Daniel Stern. The tall burglar from home alone.
Is he Howards' brother?
Danica McKellar (aka Winnie) is now a well published author about mathematics...and probably the most attractive one, too.
Did they change the music for Netflix? It's a bummer the music rights weren't negotiated for home video release to start with...
All the music was there. If they didn't have the rights to the music, they shouldn't have released it in the first place. That's a bummer.
Well, the problem was no one saw entire-series home video releases for TV shows as a possibility when the show was made in the late 80s-early 90s. Back then, you'd only get a "Best of" or few-key-episode VHS release, but not much more than that. Music rights were usually negotiated for on-air and syndication broadcasts only.
So as far as music is concerned, while other shows are able to get around it because they have relatively few instances to renegotiate licensing, The Wonder Years literally has hundreds of songs to renegotiate. It was way more music-centered than just about any other show made before Glee. So as far as physical media is concerned, the only way The Wonder Years will ever be released is if they substituted much (or all) of the music, and there seems to be little interest in doing so. They're not going to do what MTV has done with Daria, and rerelease the show with entirely new, generic music.
And after looking into it based on your post, they replaced not only the Joe Cocker theme song, but also several high-profile songs (Hendrix, The Doors) for the Amazon and Netflix streaming. So, yes, it's not all there even now.
My older brother and I were way into that show, during original airings he and I were about the same ages as the Wayne and Kevin characters respectively. Our favorite HS teacher loved it too, he came of age in the same era as the Kevin character. The soundtrack CD introduced us to the Indigo Girls (they covered "Get Together") a few years before we would have heard of them from lesbian fans in Ann Arbor. Sad about the reality of Daria too, that was a great show.
Wonder Years is an all-time favorite. It's amazing to me how it was set in the 60's, yet so much of it rings true about growing up in the suburbs in the 90's just the same.
Breaking Bad
One thing that I found recently that makes me rather nostalgic and mad (only because I foolishly bought the DVD compilations of these shows years ago) is series like "Cheers", "MacGyver", "The A-Team" and few others ("Star Trek" and "Star Trek: TNG" as well) , as well as some of my favorite BBC stuff like "Black Adder" and "Fawlty Towers" and the UK version of "The Office".
Have you watched Luther? It's a bbc show that is on Netflix as well.
Does it really match the hype?
Cancelled my account after they got rid of king of the hill streaming.
South Park hurt more
Firefly!
If you check out firefly, make sure to watch serenity also, it really explains a lot.
Yep. One of the best shows ever and those idiots at Fox stopped it after one season. There are just soooo many good quotes from that show and the acting is superb. Having a hot prostiute on board don't hurt either!
The IT Crowd and Better Off Ted are both solid.
Better Off Ted...cancelled way before its time.
True, but you still get two good seasons out of it.
IT Crowd for sure. Peep Show as well.
Black Books and Spaced are way better than The IT Crowd if you're looking for Brittish comedies.
EDIT* Of course Netflix took both off around 2 weeks ago.... Just steal them like everyone else on a torrent site. You won't be disappointed.
they just put up an idiot abroad; makes me so happy. 1 weird ass suggestion, try "rubber". The description alone will have you hooked.
1.5 stars but the description has me interested. I said WTH immediately.
Yes rubber is hilariously strange.
Rubber is truly amazing, the epitome of an entertaingly shitty movie. Troll 2 is another solid choice in this category.
Don't you like most of your fellow Mgobloggers? Why would you punish them with this abomination.
It's weird and it's mostly boring except for a few moments. Not worth your time.
I mean, the only answer here is G.I. Joe. Like the original G.I. Joe.
Sherlock is awesome! There's also The Killing and The Fall (Gillian Anderson in her sexy maturity). Both are murder mystery/crime thrillers that are originally European. Dutch remade American and Irish respectively. There's so much good stuff on Netflix that I'd cancel DirecTV if not for sports. Also The IT Crowd.
The West Wing
I just finished watching the whole West Wing series again. Probably the smatest show ever written.
Not gonna lie, I've seen every episode of South Park multiple times, and I still was pissed when they pulled it from Netflix.
Obviously.
Lie to me, Momento, Oldboy, 13 assassins, warrior
Only one season, but pretty great
And it had one of the best theme songs!
It's too bad that show didn't catch on...
I plan on reviewing 24 before the new spinoff starts, you can't go wrong with Jack Bauer. X-Files was also great to re-watch.
MIAMI CONNECTION. You can thank me later.
I'm not sure if it's available on netflix streaming but Orphan Black is amazing. 1st season was 10 episodes so very easy to binge-watch it. If not on netflix I'm sure you can find a torrent of it. Season 2 starts on BBC America in April. I can't recommend that show enough.
My wife and I got into Orphan Black last year. I would also recommend it.
I strongly recommend Memento and In Bruges, if you haven't seen either. I also enjoyed Cocaine Cowboys, Monsters (directed by the same guy who is doing the Godzilla reboot), and Equilibrium, which features a pre-Dark Knight Christian Bale. I remembered renting it several years ago after he was cast and was pleasantly surprised.
In Bruges was fantastic. I personally think it's Colin Farrell's best work.
I third In Bruges - I was not a COlin Farrel fan until that movie. Great, great work.
Happy I gave it a try. Funny stuff. Good show!
It's not the best documentary I've ever seen, but it certainly is the most heart-wrenching.
So many feels.
Hidden gems that surprised me: Funeral Kings, Prince Avalanche, Joe the King, Diggers
Tucker and Dale vs. Evil is a fun flick, also if you're into comic type stuff then check out Arrow.
Is surprisingly funny as hell! I stumbled upon that a couple years back and laughed my ass off the whole movie.
David Cross is a national treasure for his work in this and "Arrested Development".
The movie Exam. It's a British movie and the plot is about one of the most seemingly boring topics ever...a job interview. It's surprisingly awesome.
Found it on Netflix and was very happy.
Sherlock also obviously.
John Dies at the End, The Brass Teapot, Tucker and Dale vs Evil, God Bless America, Dog Pound, Offender.
Its a movie but check out 'Drinking Buddies'. It stars Anna Kendrick, Jake Johnson, Ron Livingston, and Olivia Wilde.
fell in love with Olivia Wilde watching that one. But I agree, solid movie, better than expected.
On my list was gonna watch it last week. I'll now watch it this week.
Really?! I was hugely disappointed in that flick. I like every actor involved, and the story line seemed to be full of potential, but it fell flat. It just sort of ends. There is no build up, no climax, nothing.
Really? I thought Olivia's character was amazigly annoying, I mean, like the worst man!
(that was said in her character's voice - everything, I mean everything, is emphaitic. So annoying. So simple-minded).
Watched that last night actually. Found out it was based out of Revolution Brewery in Chicago and gave it a whirl. Didn't think it was that great. Good acting by all means, the story and "plot" were a bit slow/tame.
We watched Drinking Buddies one night to kill some time. It was enjoyable. I think most of the dialogue was improvised adding to the realism in the movie.
After watching Drinking Buddies, Netflix suggested Somm. It's a documentary about four guys attempting to become Master Sommeliers. It's worth a watch if you have any interest in wine.
Thursday. awesome movie starring Thomas Jane and a handful of other famous folks.
Saw that one. Very interesting and a nice turn of events that was not expected. I like Thomas Jane a lot and actually found this one by searching his name
Friday Night Lights. Very board relevant too
One of the top shows ever.
Senna, whether you are a fan or motorsports/Formula One or not, is an amazing documentary.
Great, great documentary. I also would recommend it
Loved it.
Loved it
This movie did really well with the critics but mediocre at the box office. Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard, doesn't get any better.
Really like Freaks & Geeks and Undeclared when it comes to TV shows. Wish those would have lasted longer on air.
Really enjoyed World's Greatest Dad (movie) starring Robin Williams. He's a single dad, english teacher and struggling aspiring writer. His son is a complete jackass and pervert and kills himself while asphyxiating himself during masterbation. Robin Williams pens a suicide note and makes it look like his son killed himself, as well as forging a diary from his son which becomes a big hit. It's a pretty funny flick, but is also pretty thought provoking IMO.
Check out Luther.
I'll say you're welcome now, because you don't know who I really am and won't get the chance to thank me in-person.
Gotta watch Trailer Park Boys
If you haven't watched it yet, I highly suggest watching David Lynch's 'Twin Peaks'. The only show that I say competes with Breaking Bad and The Wire.
"there's a fish in the percolator"
"the owls are not what they seem"
"you remind me of a small mexican chi-wow-wow..."
Season 2 was a mess. But, in fairness, as far as I understand, there was originally supposed to be a Season 3...
In any event, the last episode of Season 2, the de facto series finale, IS a very, very good one, so it's worth the struggle to slog through the entirety of the series to reach that point.
Season 2 starts out strong, hits a really rough patch in the middle of the season with some odd and shallow plot lines, but it ends fantastically. The series finale is one of the most chilling hours of television I have ever witnessed.
There was recently an interview on avclub.com with Sherilyn Fenn (actress who played Audrey Horne). Billy Zane and Heather Graham's roles (which totally sucked the life out of season 2) were created because Lara Flynn Boyle was dating Kyle Machlachlan and was jealous of the relationship of "Cooper and Audrey." There's always been a lot of whispers of behind the scenes issues during season 2, not the least of which was getting cancelled.
Incidentally, I named my dog Special Agent Dale Cooper. And Audrey Horne was smoking.
http://www.avclub.com/article/sherilyn-fenn-talks-david-lynch-and-how-tw...
and I liked Seal Team Six, Sideeffects, Double Jeapordy, Restrepo, Limitless, Enemy at The Gate, Alpha Dog, American Psycho (do not watch with women),Perfect Getaway, Traitor, Pulp Fiction, Colditz, Counterfeiters, Inglorious Bastards, I could go on and on but its getting late so I will say goodnight Dick, Goodnght Dick. Go Blue!!!
Would get along well. That would be my list right there.
Most of the 30 for 30 docs are available for streaming. I tend to watch a lot of the British TV series, such as "MI-5," the Poirot & Marple mysteries, etc., as they're just nice to have on in the background while I'm working around the house. In my queue, but haven't started yet, because I want to devote my full attention to it, is "Twin Peaks."
I second the recommendation of "The Fall," and would add "Prime Suspect" (the original with Helen Mirren), "Inspector Lynley," "George Gentley" and "Foyle's War" if you like mysteries.
Since there are a lot of Detroit (and Michigan people) on here, you should check out the Doc called A Band Called Death. About 3 black brothers from inner city Detroit that started a Punk rock band in the 70s. 2 Brothers are still alive today and has interviews with their sons and stuff. Pretty interesting as their music was pretty damn good too.
SO. DAMN. GOOD.
Another documentary on Netflix for the Detroit folks on here (as well as others) is 'Burn'. It follows a company of firefighters on the Eastside.

If you don't mind your tv shows with 50% subtitles, it's HILARIOUS. It stars Steven van Zandt and it's about a mafia guy that has to move to norway. Highly recommended. And like most people have said, House of Cards and Orange is the New Black are amazing.
Finally someboyd mentioned Lillehammer. Great show. I'm not surprised many aren't watching it, though. People really are missing out.
They're probably available on Netflix, but you can seen them on YouTube: Cabal, Vendetta and Ratking. They're fabulous, set in Italy, very compelling, sophisticated, complex and edgy. You may have to watch each episode twice. I haven't read the books on which they're based, but I'll do it sometime soon.
Apparently they cost so much to produce that the second season was not produced AFAIK.
.
Clue
The Conversation
Days of Heaven
The Act of Killing
Seven Chances
Melancholia
The Apartment
LOST
New Girl
Archer
The Act of Killing was the best movie I saw last year. That said, it's incredibly heavy, so be prepared.
BLUE MOUNTAIN STATE!!!
And Trailer Park Boys!
If you are a fan of music I definitely recommend Who is Harry Nilsson and Why is Everybody Talking About Him?
Great documentary about one of the greatest artists in music history.
buckaroo bonzai across the 8th dimension
you won't regret it
The League. If you're into fantasy football, then it's a plus. Otherwise, it's a hilarious TV show
The Tudors was just flat-out AWESOME. Also, Hemlock Grove is probably the best show on netflix. It has a werewolf/vampire type motif but it's fantastic. And I'm in my 30's.
Lillehammer. Watch it...Just do it.
The Killing. Underrated. It's slow but in a good way. i.e. the murder doesn't get solved in one unrealistic episode but it's no slow in that plenty happens each episode and has one on edge often. Great acting, storyline, plots, twists. Of course it's based off of a Swedish show but that likely makes it all the better.
Dirty Wars. Check it out. A documentary about....well, yea.
Manhatten for a Woody Allen flick.
Longmire is okay to kill some time...40 minute episodes about crime out West. Good acting but unlike the above each episode is a new crime. Interesting enough.
Maron. Comedian Mark Maron doin a show. Funny shit
Louie if you've never watched it. Best comedian and a damn good actor I have to say.
Brew Masters. Dogfish Head brewery dude does a show about making cool/weird beers and of course the everyday happenings at a big micro/craft brewery.
Hard Eight. Movie.
Crystal Fairy. Check it out. Michael Cera is in it. If it sounds interesting enough by the brief description, pull the trigger, I'd recommend it.
The Silence. Pretty interesting mystery about missing girls, years apart. Swedish I think...so it's good.
Luther is very good too as others have said (British); crime/murder/detective show. I also like Anika Bengston, a Swedish crime show.
Wish You Were Here. Drama. Good flick. Good plot twists and a realistic story.
The Ninth Gate. Johnny Depp yo, doing his thing. Good suspense/thriller.
As for new movies, I haven't seen Wolf of Wall Street or American Hustle (though by my tastes I can already tell I'll like WoWS more), but check out Dallas Buyers' Club when you can. Awesome.
Watched The Silence last week and really enjoyed it. Dark but very interesting.
the netflix generated sub-genres are fascinating and generally suggest some great content.
For the guys looking to watch something with the significant other, I'll recommend Baby Daddy. It's an ABC Family show but it's surprisingly funny. And it doesn't hurt there is a steady stream of cute actresses in the show.
Schooled: the price of college sports. Very interesting and really puts NCAA rules in perspective
Movies:
Tell No One
Dead Again
TV:
Avatar ( if they still have it )
is tell no one from the Harlan Coben book?
Yes, and it was made into a French movie, a well-paced, tense thriller.
I would recommend Detropia, pretty interesting documentary.
Just do like I do and only watch Workaholics.
#YouGottaBeFresh
I'm a sucker for scifi based series:
Warehouse 13 - ridiculous and intelligent at the same time. The actor chemistry is amazing.
Lost - yeah it doesn't answer all the questions, but its a hell of a ride.
Dollhouse - Joss Whedon - watch it love it...
Firfely - Whedon again - love it...
Lost Girl - really amazing show - totally surprised me how it snuck up on me.
Luther - another vote from me - Idris Elba is an amazing actor
Torchwood - only the first 3 seasons before Starz took over, but a fun clever show - if you like Dr Who you'll like Torchwood
Asylum - crazy good acting and show - spooky and each season its own self contained show.
Miscellaneous watches - Jericho, Alias, Nikita, Blue Mountain State, Continuum, Dr. Who, Prison Brea, The League, Chuck, etc...
I could go on an on, but that is the top of my TVlsit
It's all about Mystery Science Theater 3000!!
I also forgot to mention Primer. I've watched it like six times and still can't wrap my head around it.
sadly, it expired on there
but, his long-awaited follow-up Upstream Color is available to stream
For any zombie movie lovers I highly recommend a foreign film on Netflix called "dead snow". I believe it's from Sweden, it was extremely entertaining and lots of gore!
"Elvis 56" narrated by Levon Helm. A fascinating look at the year Elvis broke big with a lot of great full song footage from early TV appearances.
Parenthood
One of my favorite shows on TV right now
My girlfriend got me hooked on the Walking Dead. I never thought I'd watch that sort of show. Before that, I watched Breaking Bad and Orange is the New Black.
Disclaimer: I believe all of these are available on Netflix, but my apologies if one or two of them is not, and is on Amazon Prime instead. I can't keep them all straight.
Primer (as mentioned above already) -- a low-budget (but very effective) ride into the not-so-glamorous effects of time-travel. Yeah, this ain't Back To The Future, here.
Timecrimes -- And if you liked Primer, give this a try. IMO, it's even better. It's in Spanish, with English subtitles -- but don't let that scare you away. The first few minutes, you'll be like, "...the fuck...?" but stick with it. Trust me on this one; this movie has a great payoff.
Let The Right One In -- The best vampire movie I've ever seen. But be sure to watch the original (in Swedish, with English subtitles), and not the English-version remake.
Kenny -- An Australian "mockumentary" about a guy in the portable toilet rental company business. Yes, seriously. It's got a lot of heart, and the central character, Kenny, has an outlook on life that more people should embrace. One word of advice, though: watch it with the subtitles on, unless you're a native Australian. There's a lot of good dialog and nuanced language in there, easy to miss for a Yank.
The Killing (TV series) -- This 3-season TV series originally aired on AMC, and I watched it in its original run. An enjoyable, atmospheric murder mystery, with some really, really strong acting.
Room 237 -- A documentary about the hidden messages and meanings in the film The Shining, and specifically, about the mad genius of Stanley Kubrick. I found myself sarcastically saying, "Oh yeah, sure...right" at several points throughout, followed minutes later by "Holy shit..." Sure, it may be ALL bullshit, but I wanted to line up and buy that bullshit (with an extended warranty + undercoating) after watching this movie. That's all I'm gonna say about this one. :-)
13 Assassins -- Disclaimer: I'm not into these kinds of movies, at all. Meaning, stylized Japanese samurai films. But damn...this is just an impressive and very enjoyable movie. Everything looks amazing, and the fight sequences are incredible. I really enjoyed this one, MUCH more than I thought I would.
Hardly a hidden diamond in the rough, but Dexter is certainly worth watching if you have a lot of time. If you like the show, I've found it's sometimes easier to pause in the middle of an episode rather than deal with the cliffhanger they sometimes throw in at the end of an episode.
Dexter is mostly worth the ride, even though some of the seasons are quite a bit...bumpy. There's one season in particular that I thought was absolutely TERRIBLE, though...
There being two seasons I couldn't stand (Lumen and Jimmy Smits)
It could have been one of the best. But...without spoiling anything...the "you didn't see that coming" moment, and its aftermath, proved to be an absolutely terrible idea. If they were going to go the route they did (which was completely stupid, but again, no spoilers) they should have swapped the roles of the characters. They had Olmos, a terrific actor, and they pretty much wasted their opportunities with him.
I hated this season so much that I almost completely abandoned the show at this point.
That season was not good...had sort of forgotten about it despite it being so recent. Still disliked Lumen season more
Good one to watch with the missus
'League of Gentlemen' - this is a British comedy series that you really have to be a little sick and twisted to really appreciate. If you don't like extremely dark humor, this is not for you...
I lived in London when it originally aired and bought the UK DVDs and kept an old DVD player that was 'cracked' to be able to play DVDs from any region around for several years...just to be able to play them. Was delighted when it showed up on Netflix.
Better write-up here than i can give it http://voices.yahoo.com/the-league-gentlemen-monty-python-meets-alfred-1609895.html
It was a stage show for several years first, so the characters and stories were refined over a long period before going onto TV and for it requires repeated viewing to catch all the humor as some is quite subtle and there is just a lot of complexity to the characters and plots
If you don't get why a butcher shop called 'H. Briss & Sons' is funny, maybe take a pass on this.
(not to be confused with movie 'League of Extraordinary Gentlemen')
This show has been on for 6 years, so may not be much of a hidden gem - Sons of Anarchy. I say it because there's quite a bit of people that haven't seen it, as they are like me who originally didn't watch it because I can't relate to Harley fanatics who are outlaws. The show is solid all-around, though- great writing, great acting, original plot ideas, and a lot of twist and turns that you don't see coming, and the show has never really lost its touch after 6 seasons. I recommend you give it a try and at least watch the first season.
Next to The Wire, best series I've ever seen.
Elizabeth Moss (Peggy from Mad Men) stars in this...miniseries from New Zealand. It's really dark but very, very well done. I think it's 6-7 episodes and I highly recommend it
I watched The Paperboy last night(movie) and wasn't expecting much but it actually is a damn good flick. Good acting by all. Nicole Kidman is hot as hell in this movie. Lots of star power too.. Mathew McConaughey, John Cusack and Zac Efron.
In The Loop -- This movie bills itself as a comedy...but I gotta say, it probably rings fairly true as to how politics work and huge decisions are made. In any event, it's a highly enjoyable and very-well acted film. Strongly recommended.
