OT: Nebraska vs Oklahoma rivalry to resume

Submitted by MikeCohodes on

Nebraska and Oklahoma have announced a home and home series for the 2021 and 2022 football seasons, renewing their rivalry.  (LINK)

Now that teams are setting up games that far out, who would you like to see Michigan try and schedule a home and home for in the Big 12?  We haven't really played too many teams from that conference in a long time.  I personally would love to see us take on Texas in a home and home series, I've always wanted to travel to Austin.  Any other ideas?

IOWA STATE!  Just kidding...

I'd like to see

Michigan take on Texas or Oklahoma.

Wouldn't mind some of the PAC-12 (although we've scheduled some for the future), but I'm thinking more like Stanford, UCLA, or USC.

however, we have played PAC teams a bit recently (Washington and Oregon this past decade) and as you pointed out we have them on the schedule in the future (CU, Utah, and Oregon State).  I just want to see some Big 12 games because we haven't played them in awhile outside of bowl games.  I cannot remember the last time Michigan played a Big 12 team outside of a bowl game.

I'm all for the continuation of rivalries.  However small, this is the first smart thing any college team has done in regard to whom it will play in what seems like a long time...I grant that that "long time" has been two weeks, but still...

Definitely Texas. That Rose Bowl, ending aside, was a fantastic game. Two storied programs that have only played each other once (I believe). Plus, I went to UT for grad school and would love to travel back to Austin for any reason, such a fantastic city.

Other than Texas and Oklahoma, not really any team I would want to do a home and home with.  Saying that, who knows if the Big12 will even exist that far into the future and if it does exist, who knows what teams will even be in the conference.  While it is nice to set up these home and home series, I think it is a bit premature considering the everchanging alignment of college football conferences.

I will never understand this "I'm not sure I'd play a road game at any school not in the top 10 all time in wins historically and/or without an 85,000 seat plus stadium". There is no school in the country that operates under those parameters. I'd rather play a good Okie State or Kansas State or TCU or WVU than a mediocre Texas.

Maybe they know something the general public doesn't.  That, of course, would be a true playoff where major conference champions are guaranteed a berth.  I have made no bones about wanting to see a superconference structure, in which the four survivors are the B1G, Pac-16, SEC, and an amalgation of whatever worthy teams are left in the Big 12, ACC, and Big East.

If the playoffs are still a beauty pageant by the time the series starts up, it's a bad move.  We love to complain about the SEC model of only one serious non-conference matchup and three tomato cans, but it sure has gotten a lot of SEC teams into the "National Championship" game.

All either team has accomplished is to put another giant roadblock in their path to a playoff game in the current system.

on the theory that there will be a selection committee that will weigh teams strength of schedule when deciding who gets slotted into the playoffs.  That seems to be what a lot of schools are doing with these sorts of matchups.

That or they're hoping the field expands to 8 teams by then.  Who knows.

No matter how ticked you are at ND, this is a rivalry I want to see continue. IIRC, Brian wrote something to the same effect. Nebraska and Oklahoma are adjacent states, as are Michigan and Indiana. Nebraska and Oklahoma are traditional football powers, as are Michigan and ND. The fan bases are familiar with each other. There is a significant history in the series. There is literally no other team so close to Michigan geographically with which we don't have games in the offing.

Now, I think there are some other teams a home and home would be great with:

  • Tennessee
  • WVa
  • FSU
  • UCLA
  • Stanford
  • Texas

Nonetheless, they are all further away, and there isn't the same linkage as there is with ND.

According to MCubed.net, we are 17-11-1 against the Big 12 all time, although we are 4-2 against the teams that we've played that are still in that conference (0-1 vs. Texas, 1-0 vs. Baylor, 1-0 vs. Kansas, 2-0 vs. Oklahoma State and 0-1 vs. Oklahoma). We are historically 1-0 against new member West Virginia as well.

I would agree with Texas and Oklahoma - these are two storied programs that we've only seen in bowls and it would be an interesting change of pace to see them in the regular season. Of the teams in the Big XII now that we've never played, I would think TCU would make for an interesting game as well, although it doesn't seem like the gameday environment in Forth Worth is at Austin or Norman levels - could be wrong there.

That would be my guess, but they did best us in 2000 something. Can't recall the exact year, but the stadium was nice. We had a terrible special team day is one thing I do remember.

Not really so much a continuation of the rivalry, it isn't realy resuming, just renewed for 2 years.  I don't think you can call it a rivalry when it's only being played twice in the next 10+ years.

Probably the saddest part (for Nebraska) about coming to the B1G is losing the game with Oklahoma.
