I'll be honest - I didn't even consider the possibility that Riley would ever leave that gig at Oregon State. It might be interesting to see what he can do with a better talent pool that I think might have been available to him in Corvallis, but this is a very odd, unexpected move for Nebraska. I really would have thought it would have been someone who could run their scheme with little interruption....also someone with much more "wow" factor than Mike Riley.

Riley had a 14-34 record in the NFL. But that's a whole different universe.

As a college head coach, his record is 93-79, which has to be pretty telling, isn't it?

When Hoke was hired here in 2011, the rest of the country was like, "huh?" I have to think they're downright dumbfounded over Nebraska hiring Riley.

Nebraska goes from having one of the most.......what should I say..........."abrasive" coaches, to the universally thought of nicest guy in football.  I think they were looking for a second coming of Dr. Tom.

My first reaction is "Who the fuck is Mike Riley?" Oregon State has been decent in his tenure, but never elite. OSU has been competetive in a surprising number of games, but never good enough to get over the hump and reach elite status, only managing to underperform at critical moments. Sound familiar?

Nebraska basically just hired Brady Hoke.

Husker fans really have to be scratching their heads, but who knows. Maybe it'll turn out to be a great hire.

I just don't see where they'd fire Pelini, a proven winner, to take this chance.

This hire baffles me.

  • In 14 seasons at Oregon State, Riley has reached 10 wins exactly once.
  • Oregon State has had a losing record 6/14 times under Riley
  • Oregon State has never won the Pac-10/12 conference title, nor the Pac-12 North division title, under Riley.
  • Oregon State has only been ranked at the end of the season 4/14 times under Riley.

are so predictable.  It's a good hire.  Will he outperform Pelini?  Perhaps.  Perhaps not.  9 wins each year is no joke, as we all are finding out.  He's a good coach.  It's a good hire.  The sentiment (most, anyway) here reeks of the same arrogance that we have in weeks leading up to games against lowly opponents like Rutgers and Minnesota.  You know, they CERTAINLY couldn't be on our level...until they hand us our asses.  I'd compare OSU in the PAC 12 to Kentucky in the SEC.  You aren't winning 9-10 games very often.  Give him the resources that Nebraska has, and he'll do just fine.  The hard part, for Nebraska fans, will be the immediate results.  He's going to change the style, and it'll take some time to get the pieces in place.  If they don't run out of patience (Hello, Michigan fans!), he will work out just fine.

Riley makes sense. He has been down lately, not because he's lost his touch or has been a failure, but because the PAC12 has become a very tough conference to win in. How could he compete for recuits at OSU vs. ORE, USC, UCLA and AZ, not to mention the quality of coaches in the PAC12 is much better than the ACC, B1G and the Big XII. He has an offense that is very savvy and can be applied at a high level without needing high 4 and 5 star recruits to come in and run the system. This is a hire much like 2 years ago when Wisconsin hired in Gary Anderson. If Mike Riley has the support, in 2-3 years, he can win the West consistantly.

is because Riley has a resemblance to Jim Harbaugh, and whenever I log on to ESPN, I see the "breaking news" tab along with a coach that somewhat looks like Harbaugh, and then I get dissapointed.

Some believe Shawn Eichorst is a Trojan horse sent by Barry Alvarez to keep Nebraska mediocre for Wisconsin's sake. It should be clear by now that Pelini wasn't fired for wins and losses but because of personality.
