OT: NCAAFB Tourism - U Houston

Submitted by formerlyanonymous on

Last year, I wrote a post over at MaizeNBrew about a trip I took to UT and how I looked at it as a Michigan fan, and it really seemed to interest quite a few people. So with my recent trip to the University of Houston for their videogame blow out of Rice, I decided to do a post on my write up of the stadium and feel of UH.

This post is much less in the perspective of a Michigan fan as it is a college football fan, so it's too off topic for me to post it as a diary, and far too long to post as a board topic. So I've got it hosted over at my side space, and I invite you guys to check it out. Quite a few pictures and short paragraphs for an easy read. So yeah, if you're bored or just interested.

Thanks for posting that review. The old Southwest Conference had every type of school imaginable, didn't it?

* UT: Public Ivy sort of school in an atypical Texas city
* A&M: Aggies... need I say more?
* Tech: Spartyish school in the middle of nowhere
* Baylor: Private, uptight Baptist university (largest of that type in the world, supposedly)
* SMU: Big DFW $ located next to Highland Park (very appropriate)
* TCU: More DFW, but with an off-the-beaten track feel (culturally and academically)
* Rice: Elite private school... the Northwestern of the old SWC
* Houston: Commuter school... really the only one on the list

Seriously, pick any pair and you won't find perfect overlapping.

I'm a huge fan of college athletics...first and foremost College Football, but basketball and other sports as well. I love pro sports, but I don't think that the whole body of work in pro sports can hold a candle to College Athletics...the tradition, rivalries, students, college girls, tailgates...you get the picture. The NFL and NBA are just so bland compared to that.

You don't get the "culture" factor in pro sports.

I'd like to see more of these posts...even though they may be OTish. I live in the Detroit area, but I'll try to make it somewhere else next season to do my part.

great post, even though it wasn't a great gameday experience (or at least it didn't seem so)

The experience wasn't so bad as much as the game was really boring. UH has a very quaint feeling to it. A close game would be great to see, but something tells me they wouldn't sell out for a majority of their schedule. This was one of the biggest crowds they had all year (Tech set the all time attendance record) and they were very into the game deep into it.

I can't say Michigan's fans would compare. If it were 52-0 at the half, Michigan Stadium would be empty. They still had 85-90% capacity last night that kept yelling and being loud on every 3rd down. That was pretty awesome.

I wish I could had made the Tech game, but tickets just weren't worth buying at the time.

I'm hoping to catch a game at A&M next season, maybe LSU or Baylor. Perhaps even a few FCS stadiums. I missed a chance to write up Texas Tech last season since I visited on Parents Weekend which was a total downer.
