OT: ncaa 2011 defensive help

Submitted by JimBobTressel on

I was going up against a random guy today online in NCAA 2011. He was Texas, I picked Oklahoma State.

He subbed in the backup QB (dual threat) over the Longhorn's current pocket passing QB for the entire game. He'd take the shotgun snap, drop back (way back) where my DE's would take extra precious seconds to get to him before hitting the RB in the flat to bounce it outside for 7-8 yards....EVERY TIME. I would luck into stopping it sometimes, but that was essentially his whole damn offense.

Incredibly annoying. The drives I would mount would stall in the redzone and I had to settle for FGs, but but his strategy got him touchdowns.....I couldn't find the proper defense to call against it. He'd do it w/ 4 WRs most of the time, and on the occasion I covered the RB... he'd run, then wait wait back there before nailing a crossing WR

anyone come across this shit?

To really be effective at defense you should either play your MLB or your SS you can negate most everything over the middle, and you will be able to man up better on the opposing running backs. This is best against teams with a mobile QB, just make sure to run a contain D and use your safety. 1-2 Turnovers means a win instead of a loss because most people are good enough to score on every possession that they have.

If you want to do an equally cheap douchy thing on defense do punt block man. Bring the return man in and cover the 5th option. It pretty much is a sack or pick everytime because the o-line can't handle a 6 man down rush.

Try setting your defensive ends into zones by audibling them. Or you could run velcro 9 and audible one LB to spy. Maybe if you are desperate sub safties to be LBs, if he never runs. You will definatley have to control a LB or DE. That is what I do a lot and I won my dynasty league.

First of all he's an asshat because that ruins any fun in the game.

Generally for defense I run a 3-3-5 and zone blitz the crap out of opponents because they find it hard to adjust to all of the different angles and coverages.

Against this specific guy I would run some sort of contain play which should put the DE's outside and have a linebacker spy. Control the linebacker and shadow the running back. Alternatively you could run zone coverage plays where people are playing a shallow outside zone like a cover three. I also like running cover one since it puts a man on the runningback and also gives a linebacker in zone that you can control.

It's not a glitch. A glitch is when the ball is in thrown in front of your receiver and then it jumps between frames into the defender's hands, or when a player runs through another player.

But, I know what you mean. Mesh is 2010 was so broken. It was good for 20 yards. Guy goes in motion presnap and tells you whether the defense is in Man or Zone. If it's man, you throw to the RB in the flat. Otherwise you hit a guy across the middle in between zones.

Sub your linebackers for safties. If he is depnding on the strong side to scramble contain him with FS or sending SLB position. Force a dual threat to go over the top. Or learn how to copy cat.

Like everyone has said, shadow a linebacker on the RB. Also, there are plenty of plays within every formation with zone blitzes from the LBs that allow the ends and sometimes even DTs to drop back into coverage, which should confuse someone who obviously knows little about coverages or blitz packages. He'll at least be forced to play more realistically if he actually does know something about football.

So true, my friends brother plays online and does the same thing runs the same play as OP is describing (he's an tOSU fan too), and also goes for 2 point conversions everytime. His rationale behind it is if you can't stop it thats too bad for you. I'd rather play realistic games against the CPU which seems to be a lot better this season minus a few plays where the AI is bad. I get a lot of 3rd and longs converted against me because my players are just standing in the middle of the field and watch people go by them.

quarter man cover two with the mlb in spy. have your corners play bump and run and then control the middle saftey on the rb. or use the de and make 1 or 2 power moves to put the pressure on the qb.  qb wont be going anywhere hb wont do shit vs a saftey and your corners that close on the wr should take care of the crossing.  if not nickle strong, strong man. sends the corner of the edge and vs users its the closest thing to a nano blitz (madden term sorry) that i have found leaves 6 guys in coverage (5 in man and one saftey for an oh shit play)  should be in on the qb in 2 seconds or less. have the corners in bump and he doesnt stand a chance. How do i know this. because college+no job= way to much damn time in my room

I play way to much NCAA. If they are running 4 wide sets and going to RB like that just play 3-3-5 and a cover 2. The flats will be covered.

The best position for you to play in this situation is the MLB. I suggest playing a few games in exhibition to get used to coverage with the MLB. It's not too hard just stay in your zone. I like to back pedal holding the left trigger button (xbox) this makes your MLB always facing the ball and always set for the pick. A simple tap of the Y button and you'll intercept a ton. Also, controlling the MLB always keep him centerfield. You'll prevent the run and it’s easy to hop in front of those post routes coming to your zone.

And that should stop the douche baggery. Good luck.

All games have unforseen "glitches". Whether it be on-line football or WOW. Some people will find a certain move/play that "wins". They will do it regardless of how realistic or how it might work into storyline just to ensure they win. It is a bit rude and really dopey but it is what it is. I play the games by my rules and just cause some punk in a different time zone is willing to "game" the system to win, won't cause me excessive heartburn.

I absolutely love going up against people who just whore out the mobile QB's.  With a 3-3-5 or 4-2-5 you can put any one of your 3 safeties in spy, or you vary who you put in contain.  Spur contain, bandit, contain etc.  Then you can blitz from the side you don't contain.  I think I held someone playing as OSU to about 12 total yards a couple months ago.

Use a lb spy and man coverage, try to get a db on the rb so he can keep up to the flat. Might take some pre snap adjustments which can be really tough when user players snap the ball outright without making any reads. Online in a lot of sports games (football in particular) are just too easily exploited for my liking, can never get a realistic game. Pretty sad

There's a play in the five wide set with arkansas, i believe it is the short pass audible, that whilst messing around I discovered is nearly uncoverable. The two WR's on the right run slants the inside man on the trips right runs a hitch, the middle receiver in the trips runs a quick out, and the outside receiver runs a streak. Its completely indefensible. I they run man, thro a slant, if they run cover 2 time the throw to the streak, if they run cover 3 hit the hitch... its so gamey.

Word up people, thanks for the help....lots of knowledgeable gamers on this board. I like the 3-3-5 and Quarter Cover 2 options.

I think I'll start using my MLB more. Problem is I can only do that in passing situations... otherwise I end up turning anyone into Obi Ezeh in run defense.
