OT: NBA Sixers Center Darryl Dawkins Has Died, a.k.a. "Chocolate Thunder"
This is a great loss.
One of my favorite NBA players growing up, and a key playmaker and team mate of the great "Dr." Julius Irving.
57% FG Pct over career.
RIP "Dr. Dunkenstein", and "Sir Slam"
And many a backboard were destroyed that way I can tell you.

was going to post a relevant gif but OT season is over. bye bye to him and this thread

Have some class ... oh right you don't have any.
My first inclination after seeing a sports legend die isn't IBD regardless if it's too OT. Something's wrong with you people.
RIP.

why don't you take the plank out of your own eye before taking the speck out of mine
August 27th, 2015 at 8:33 PM ^
He was (for a brief time) a member of the Pistons. I vote the thread should be allowed.

Dawkins followed closely in Moses Malone's footsteps, declaring hardship and getting drafted out of high school. A pioneer, decades before Lebron/Kobe/Garnett and one-and-dones. Definitely a relevant figure in college sports, even though he never played them.

Dawkins was the first high schooler taken in the first round of the draft and was an alien from
the planet Lovetron.

The mod that deletes a memorial post is the mod that takes their job too seriously. Seriously, you ibd guys are some classless pricks.
August 27th, 2015 at 8:57 PM ^
deletion would be wrong

Loved watching him and Dr J

So let's make this related to Michigan; Darryl Dawkins played in the NBA for who? the Philly 76ers -> The 76ers recently signed G Nik Stauskas -> Nik Stauskas played his college ball at The University of Michigan.
BOOM!! Not OT (here is where I would insert Stauskas going Super Saiyan against Florida if I knew how to do that)
August 27th, 2015 at 8:08 PM ^
It seems he was called back to Lovetron. Godspeed.
August 27th, 2015 at 8:14 PM ^
Sorry he's gone, and think the post is a good effort. But one OT post left up in defiance of the rules is then justification for countless others. Suspect this one's coming down.

First, a mod note:
Yeah, the scope of OT narrows considerably in the non-OT season - it is not an absolute prohibition, and certainly consideration will be given to an NBA legend like Darryl Dawkins. I apologize if anyone took the transition too literally, but yeah, this stays.
To that end, RIP Darryl Dawkins. I will watch those named dunks, such as the "In Your Face Disgrace" in his honor tonight.

and of course, the
Chocolate Thunder Flying

Mod, is the Friday Posbang too OT or o.k.?

Even if this is only up for a few hours, it is a nice tribute. Thanks for posting.

This be taken down are off base, in my opinion. The demise of OT season means we have less tolerance for OT, but certainly some still warrant discussion. This should stay, as chocolate thunder was a legend.
August 27th, 2015 at 9:54 PM ^
is saying it ought to be taken down, per se. What I'm saying (and interpreting a few others as saying) is that according to the rules we've read the last few days (repeatedly, and a bit ad nauseam), it's a marginal OT at best. In this respect I speak for no one other than myself.
Furthermore, no one I've read here is saying anything other than RIP Darryl. I remember him and liked him. And am sorry to see him gone.

RIP to a true legend.
August 27th, 2015 at 9:22 PM ^
...during the Phi Slama Jama period. Drexler, Olajuwon, etc...

I'm too young to really know who we his, but I can always appreciate a big man who dominates the paint.
RIP good sir
August 27th, 2015 at 9:37 PM ^
but just to be clear to OP "Dr. Dunkenstein" was Darryl Griffith not Darryl Dawkins. much love to both
August 27th, 2015 at 9:38 PM ^
RIP Darryl

I have never liked any NBA team, except the Sixers of that era. And he was one of the reasons. RIP
August 28th, 2015 at 12:22 AM ^
Also, people who bitch ad nauseam about what is or isn't OT are hands down the worst parts of the MGoForum. FFS, let the mods determine this - it's why they're mods and you're not.

Darryl Dawkins preceded my fanhood by a few years, but he was featured in a basketball dunks and bloopers movie I watched about a million times as a kid. He was taking about breakaway rims, that were introduced because of his proclivity to shatter backboards, and said "they can still be broken! If you hit it from the side, it's gonna break!" He seemed like a really cool dude. RIP, Chocolate Thunder.
August 28th, 2015 at 12:46 AM ^
Inventor of breaking rims LOL. Darryl now can break rims in heaven R.I.P. Chocolate Thunder.
