OT: NBA lock out started UPDATE**

Submitted by The Blue in Ohio on

Just heard on the radio that the NBA has locked out the players already, the CBA wasn't set to expire until midnight tonight.

**I later heard that the NBA changed the language the used and is now saying they are going to lock out the players at 11:59 tonight. I just was unable to update due to lack of computer and a dead cell phone battery.

The NBA is my least favorite of the professional sports. The season is too long and the only important games are in the playoffs. I also do not identify with the culture of the NBA. The NBA is a product of the hip-hop culture and that is beyond me. All of this makes the NBA hard to watch personally.

That being said, the players in the NBA are no different than in any other league. Many of them did not go to college and receive a good education, but that can be said for baseball, football, and hockey. I have heard plenty of players from each league speak and there are idiots in each one. While, I can not relate to the culture of the NBA that does not mean it is wrong or bad. It is just not my cup of tea.

The players should never cave to the owners. It is not their fault Greg Oden can do nothing but ride pine for years and then be offered an 8.8 million dollar offer. The owners are to blame and they should be the ones making concessions.

Part of the problem with ridiculous salaries is the structure of the sport.

There are essentially 30 localized monopolies that are not allowed to fail but must compete with each and every one of the other localized monopolies.

In any other business, there would be a shakeout, mergers, acquisitions etc.

The owners may have created this business model, but they are now the victims of it.

Can we just stop posting NBA threads from now on? It's pretty clear the direction that it's going to go in every time.  80% of the board is anti-NBA and of that group, 90% refuses to give any ground.  We're all wasting our time here.  The 20% that is pro-NBA gets negged regardless of the strength of their argument or stance.  Stupid waste of time, can't wait for football season to start so these topics aren't on here anymore.

How about if you are anti NBA then don't go to a post clearly about the NBA? It's not like anyone was forced or tricked to come to this thread.

People can think what they want. I personally think the NBA is in a great position as a league right now. The talent level as mentioned before right now is at a peak.

We have the getting towards the end of their career hall of fame veterans like Kobe Bryant, Dirk Nowitzki, Steve Nash, Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen, Paul Pierce, Jason Kidd, etc

The still in their prime veterans like Dwyane Wade, Dwight Howard, Lebron James, Carmelo Anthony, Amare Stoudemire, Chris Bosh, Chris Paul, etc

The young stars of the future Kevin Durant, Derrick Rose, Rajon Rondo, Stephen Curry, Brandon Jennings, Russell Westbrook, etc

Especially with the popularity of everything with the Heat this year it's like the argument for how could the NFL have a lockout and miss games with guys like Tom Brady and Peyton Manning still in their prime.

Damn high flying hip hop kids with their oop shots and their lingo. Often an NBA player's diction doesn't sound like my diction, so I assume they are less educated than myself, because everybody should talk the socially mandated way. I don't understand that slang and "street" nomenclature are actually a way to undermine the oppressive language of the dominant class, and that the use of such language is often a conscience and culturally charged choice, and in no way signifies intelligence - if we assume intelligence is not a relative term to begin with. But since many NBA players don't speak like national news anchors, there must be something wrong, so I will try to pin it on the impotence of the city schools, or some other systemic problem that I think I read about once, and golly geez it must be fixed, because, after all, how will anyone take these guys seriously when they don't speak the approved way when interviewed during half time by assholes with shitty questions. By the way, I don't think NBA players try very hard unless it's the fourth quarter, or the playoffs, and I know this because I've watched three games in the last 10 years.

I guess I don't really care about this until November at the earliest. The biggest impact this has on my life is that it will depress Bill Simmons to no end.

Hopefully we get the NFL back shortly so it has a full season and I can continue accomplishing NOTHING every weekend.
