OT: NBA jerseys to feature ads in 2017-18

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on
Ugly and gross decision but that's pro sports for you. I'm sure the NCAA will allow them at some point so the "student athletes" become billboards that coincidentally don't receive a penny of the ad revenue.

it is gross.   you forget how nice and clean real hockey looked like until you watch an old clip and realize there's no 'joe's septic service - we pump you up!' ads next to the car, beer, etc ads.

Honest question - What is being ruined here, in your eyes?  Jerseys?  I mean, this is a billion-dollar sport being played in arenas named after banks and technology companies with million-dollar seat licenses, thousands of dollars per courtside seat, piped-in music from DJs, t-shirt cannons, and guys paid millions running up and down a court in between commercial breaks.

These are professional sports.  If they start putting "Zingermann's" ads on the back of UM basketball jerseys, sure.  But until then, I don't see how this really registers as much for anyone.

not the one patch, it is the slippery slope.  First, the WBC or IBF decided to put a Corona advertisments in the ring or on a boxer's shorts, now, fighters literally paint advertisements on their back.  It is not that any of the NBA jerseys are particularly iconic, it is that the can of worms has been opened now and there is really no reason to think that it will stop at one patch or that other sports won't follow both at the college and pro level.

this is the only aspect of the Premier League that I dislike, the prominent display of the sponsor on the uniforms. Looks awful. I'm against it on grounds that it looks bad.

But again, who really gets hurt?  It's not like I'll enjoy the GSW games any less if they have a Uber patch on the jersey?

Of all the things to get worked up about with professional sports, additional advertising seems pretty far down the list to me.  But apparently, people around here feel different.

It already has...you know they do this on practice jerseys for NBA and NFL teams already, right?

There is nothing "American" about only letting a large shoe company put a logo on your jersey, I'm sorry, but you sound like a fool.

In fact, the "AMERICAN" thing to do would be to let the owners of the teams sell their jerseys how they want and profit as much money as they possibly can from them. BUT that is probably tacky, results in less sales and hurts the brand of the NBA...so they settle on a 2.5x2.5 patch that'll say "VISA" on it or something.

We should pick something else to cry about. I get not liking it, I don't like it...if Michigan did it I especially wouldn't like it. But it's not something I'm going to get all emotional over either. There is a middle ground...I encourage some of you to join me.

If the Bobcats have ugly uniforms, they should redesign them.  That some teams may currently have poor uniforms is not a reason for all 30 teams to deface their uniforms with advertising.

Your argument is basically saying, "See that guy with a black eye?  That looks bad.  He should break his nose, too."

Nope.  My point is that people are acting like this will somehow cheapen their enjoyment of watching basketball.  The two arguments seem to be some intrinsic notion that these millionaires being paid by billionaires to play in branded stadiums in front of people is now "all about the money" because of some patches on a jersey, or that this will sully the (addmittedly) somewhat iconic jerseys of a couple of teams.

If you feel so strongly about the first option, then fine.  But with the second, it seems like a weird issue to get worked up about considering the vast majority of teams change their jerseys on the regular.

It would be nice if something were sacrosanct.  The thing about uniforms, more than the floor, the boards, the walls, the ice, the field, the stadium, whatever, more than anything else in sports, is that it serves to identify the team and provide the one single point of reference people have.  There's a reason there's a cult following of things like Uni Watch and - despite the timelessness of names like Joe Louis Arena - no obsessive following of building names.

In the short run, it will make money - afterall, previously there was no money from jersey ads and now the team will be getting potentially 6 or 7 figures from an ad.

In the long run, there might be a backlash especially for historically bad teams or teams in a downtrend.

Crap now this is some really unwelcome news. Basketball players are going to look like NASCARs.  Let's hope the NFL doesn't degenerate in this manner as well.

Some teams are awful at selling sponsorship rights (ex: the Kings deal for Sleep Train Arena naming rights) so we should at least get some hilarious results. I'm honestly more comfortable with this than putting donor names on people as we do with our coaches/ADs.

Endowing positions has existed at universities for decades.  Most of the time the endowment remains unknown to the general public.  Jim Harbaugh is only known as the "J. Ira and Nicki Harris" coach on official U-M athletic releases.  None of the professional media refers to him as such.

Jersey ads are far more visible.
