OT: My Mock Draft

Submitted by MGoVoldemort on
Last mock draft before tonight. My mock last year was pretty damn accurate; I said two guards would go in the top 10 (which happened) and was largely ridiculed for it.

1. HOU: Jadeveon Clowney
2. St. Louis: Greg Robinson
3. (Trade) DET: Sammy Watkins
4: CLE: Kalil Mack (curveball)
5: OAK: Mike Evans
6: ATL: Taylor Lewan
7: TAMPA: Johnny Manziel
8: MIN: Aaron Donald
9: BUF: Jake Matthews
10. JAX: Blake Bortles (I just don't see someone giving up the picks to come get him)
11. (Trade) NYJ: Odell Beckham
12. NYG: Darquez Dennard
13. STL: Kyle Fuller (I want major respect if this is right)
14. CHI: Haha Clinton-Dix
15. PIT: Anthony Barr
16: DAL: Eric Ebron
17. BAL: CJ Mosley
18. TEN: Brandin Crooks
19. MIA: Calvin Pryor
20. (Trade) CLE: Derek Carr

Not going to do the rest because it's a crap shoot and will have unpredictable trades.

I like it, I think one thing is that if Pryor AND Clinton-Dix are on the board when the Bears pick they would probably take Pryor. That's just my guess at #14.

I'm gonna be so pissed if the Lions trade up to the 3rd pick with all the needs they have.  Mortgaging a good chunk of this year's draft, and likely next year's first round pick doesn't seem worth it.

What needs do the Lions have? They're set at QB, RB, every OL position, DL, LB, CB, S...

Yes, they're set at LB, because they go to nickel D so much, and that's only 2 LBs, and they already have 2 great LBs, so using a 1st round pick on an OLB seems like kind of  waste.

Corner? We've used a metric fuck ton of draft picks on corners lately. We've got a ton of young, promising corners on our roster. It takes awhile to learn that position. I'd rather continue to develop all of the high picks we've spent on those promising young guys than add yet another promising young guy into the mix. It seems objectively superfluious to draft (and reach for) a corner at 10.

Safety is locked down.

Our OLine was fantastic last year. We don't need to upgrade at any position. We need a future center, but we can grab one late in the draft.

You know what position we could really use a playmaker at? Wide receiver. Remember when Calvin got hurt, and our offense turned into literal shit? Considering we also throw the ball more than just about any other team, we could probably use another guy who could blow up defenses. Also, Calvin has been really banged up the last couple of years. If he keeps going at this pace, he's not going to be around much longer. so why not draft another potential number 1 wideout, protect Calvin, and maximize Golden's strengths in the slot?

Wide Receivers are more prone to be busts than virtually any other position. Now, I understand we are just talking about one WR here, but I have heard too often that a WR is the real deal. You can get great value on WR's in the 2nd and 3rd rounds, as previous drafts have shown. Sure, there are some studs in some drafts (Julio Jones, A.J. Green), but those guys are big, physical, and fast. I'm nervous about a guy like Sammy Watkins who gained most of his receiving yards on screen passes. Does that game translate? I just dont know. I would be content with Ha Ha Clinton-Dix. We have used a good number of picks in the secondary, but that doesn't make that position group a strength.

The Lions have a need at almost every single position on the defensive side of the ball.  They already announced that they are unlikely to re-sign both Suh and Fairley at DT, so someone there could be used for depth this season and then to start next season.  At DE, Ansah is a beast, and Taylor is promising, but they lost Willie Young and need depth.  Two of the three LB spots are set with Levy and Tulloch, but Palmer is marginal as a starter.  At CB, they have used several picks in the last few years, and have a mediocre pass defense despite the talent on the DL.  I think they take at least one CB in the first 3-4 rounds, and it wouldn't surprise me to see them take Dennard or Gilbert in the 1st Rd.  As far as S goes, yes, Quin is very good, and they just brought Ihedigbo in, but most people view Ihedigbo as a stopgap, and it wouldn't surprise me if they use a pick on a safety.

I'll agree with you that on the offensive side of the ball, WR is the biggest need.  I just don't think it makes sense to trade up though.  I think it is more likely that the Lions move up from their 2nd round pick back into the end of the 1st round, to take a reciever that they like there.

What? They aren't going to re-sign Suh and Farley. I'd bet my house that's not true, nor have thy announced as such. Theyve announced the opposite if you've been paying attention.

They definitely need more depth at DE, that doesn't mean you take an OLD like Barr in the 1st round and hope he can convert into a DE. Personally, I'm huge homer, and hope they trade for Brandon Graham seeing as the Eagles don't think he fits with their new defense. OOOOOOOOWEEEEEEE, please make it so.

They don't need to pick a third LB with their 1st round pick. They just don't. OK? OK.

At CB, they've taken a lot of early picks and CB is a position that traditionally takes time to develop, so let's wait. They've invested a lot in the 6+ CBs they already have on their roster. none of the DBs in this draft are elite, and drafting one at 10th would be a reach, so we can afford to wait, or not draft a single CB.

The Lions definitely need another outside WR. That's just a fact. especially considering their offense. I'm 100% on board the Watkins train. So sue me.

I'm not a fan of trading up, but Watkins seems like an elite prospect who (shockingly) actually wants to come to Detroit. i know he's said he likes other places too, but not like the Lions. He actually, genuinely seems like he would love to be a part of the Lions. So fuck everything. Go get him. How rare is that? Make it happen, Lions.

He also fits in with what we're trying to do. I know a lot of people want us to draft a corner, but i feel like that's a wasted pick. We have a ton of young, promising corners on our roster already. Corner is a position that takes awhile for guys to figure out at the pro level, so let's give those dudes a chance, and let's turn our offense into a juggernaut.

When Calvin went down the last few years our offense turned into literal (and I mean literal) shit. Having Sammy and Golden makes our receiving corps elite, and if our young corners naturally develop the way they should, we'll be OK. We already having good safetys, and an amazing defensive line.

Let's focus on adding to our biggest strength and protect Calvin for the future. He's been banged up the last few years. He needs some help, and this will hopefully extend his career and make him that much more of a weapon. how do you cover calvin, Golden, Sammy, and Reggie all at once? Impossible.

I don't give a flying fuck what the Lions do

as long as they don't draft Charles Rogers

Although I'm pretty sure they're gonna stay put and draft a cornerback/

I wouldn't be a fan of the Lions trading up to the 3rd overall pick to get Sammy Watkins even as good as Watkins is. I have to think that the price to move up from 10th to 3rd would be a little steep considering what the Lions need to do in this draft (in my own opinion), and I still would rather they went either secondary or perhaps LB here, if they don't like the CB or S options at #10. That being said, if Watkins looks to be the best at #10 for their purposes, I wouldn't be sad if they took him - it's entirely possible to fill some of the other positions with later picks.

I would be curious to know what the OP thinks we would give up to get there in this scenario though.

I'm changing teams. I see more Ryan Leaf than Tom Brady. I rather be wrong with him somewhere else than right with him with my Bucs. Glennon didn't do to bad considering the situation in which he was in. Way bigger need than QB. WR, OG, LB and DL depth.

You want respect if you're right, what are you prepared to lose if you're wrong?

JL are my initials...Cold is a band I used to like.  So no, I am not promoting a lifestyle of punishment.

Yet, you bashing people for guessing where people are drafted based on scouting reports to me is hand in hand with people taking the time to scout players.

After years of complaining about Matt Millen ignoring positions of need to draft receivers, fans want the Lions to ignore positions of need and draft a receiver.

The Jags taking a QB in the first round would be dumb.  Yes, I know Henne is not exactly a franchise QB, but they have so many needs above replacing him at QB, and there aren't any sure-fire franchise QBs in this draft.

I think the only reason you draft a QB in the first round is if you have no option at QB (you traded your starter or your starter is absolutely terrible) or there is an Andrew Luck-type guy you can't pass up.  Some years there are a few of those, some years there are none, and I think this year is the latter so the only teams drafting QBs in the first round are the teams who absolutely need to.  The Jags don't, and have other pressing needs.  Wasting that pick on Bortles would be dumb.

I'm gonna be so pissed if the lions trade up and take Watkins, I've got Gordon in a keeper league and I drafted him in the 7th round last year, his numbers would be gaudy with Watkins opposite him and hoyer playing all season

13. STL: Kyle Fuller (I want major respect if this is right)

Ok guy, you will get respect from a stranger on a website.

If you are having a down day, just remember that I'm out there somewhere with respect for you.

Is picking Kyle Fuller there respect worthy? I thought he was 1st round talent.
