OT-My boy Burt: 90 year old plays pick up hoops

Submitted by Double-D on
I play in a pick up league that has been playing together for years. It's competitive but laid back. The skill level is a wide range from pretty good ex college players...to my boy Burt. http://fox17online.com/2015/03/11/ada-man-celebrates-90th-birthday-play… Burt usually stops in for a game or two and typically bows out to watch as the younger players filter in and the games get more physical. Burt rules in play include. Don't steal the ball from Burt. Don't fast break Burt if he is guarding you. Hands up but no shot blocking on Burt. Most importantly no jello wrestling with bikini clad woman for Burt. Edit for our boy Bielema.

Burt is still going strong I can assure you. I do get a little nervous when I don't see him for a few weeks. He drives one of those old wood paneled jeep grand wagoneers from the late eighties in polished condition. It's classic.

So I play in a 30+ hardball league (used to play in the 18+ A2 rec hardball league) and I ran into a guy looking for players for his 55+ hardball league. Due was 68 and still playing hardball. RESPECT

Props to Burt. Play as long as you can. I've played hockey with a few guys in their 70's. It's amazing what they can still do at that age. The one guy in his late 60's blew our minds when he told us he played with Bobby Orr in squirt.

but limited in hops.  can't go to his left, but unstoppable when going right.   a defensive liability against high-level competition.   can get lost in the offense but rebounds well.

if i am even alive then, it would be so cool to be that mobile and agile, and mentally with it.  God bless that guy.

I was at my friends family picnic earlier and they were having races, about a 20-25 yd dash. The last race featured 2 heavyweights. One lady was $2.50 and the other almost $3.00... neither fell and the $2.50 won by a nose.

He couldn't keep up with the fastest of us, but he could outshoot anyone on the court and outlast most of us. Phenomenal shape and while his shot was unorthodox, he'd had forty-plus years to work out all the kinks. I played moderately competitive ultimate frisbee into my forties, but that's not unusual for that league.
