OT: Music Recommendations for Some MGoBloggers

Submitted by chatster on
MGoBlog occasionally has offered me some nice introductions to music of all varieties from pop to hip hop, and from synth-rock/techno to country and everything else along the musical spectrum that I’ve never heard before, but that I’ve liked on first listen.  A few years ago, right before what some considered to be the ignominious final season for Michigan football's previous coaching regime, I discovered the band Rilo Kiley’s song A Better Son/Daughter thanks to a Michigan Football Hype Video that was posted on MGoBlog.

While reading here this morning that Damien Harris's ship might have sailed for Michigan Football, I got one of those mass email messages from Jenny Lewis, Rilo Kiley’s lead vocalist, alerting me to her new solo album called The Voyager, produced by Ryan Adams and available for preview on NPR.  One reviewer has called it a “tribute to the history of studio rock.”  She's performing tonight and tomorrow in Michigan. LINK

DISCLOSURE:  I do NOT know or have any personal connection to Jenny Lewis.  I am NOT affiliated with her record company, her producer, her management organization, her promoters, NPR or anyone who might gain from my posting this message.

Some artists that I've been listening to a lot lately and recommend.

Hip Hop: Hieroglyphics, Deltron 3030, The Pharcyde, Tribe Called Quest, Gang Starr, Wu Tang Clan (and solo albums), Outkast, Joey Badass, etc.

Rock: My Morning Jacket, Black Keys, Wilco, Morphine, The Black Crowes, The Velvet Underground, The Allman Brothers Band (especially given their retirement this year), Primus, King Crimson, Led Zeppelin (re-mastered ablums are worth it with the bonus material), The Wood Brothers, Frank Zappa (start with the album Hot Rats or Joe's Garage and work your way through his stranger material. Amazing artist), and The Band

Jazz: Mahavishnu Orchestra (Holy Fusion), Medeski Martin and Wood, Coltrane, etc.

Bluegrass/Country: Ryan Bingham, Railroad Earth, the Infamous Stringdusters

Funk: Parliament and Funkadelic, the New Mastersounds, Herbie Hancock (Head Hunters stuff), Lettuce, the Meters, and Galactic.

Dan Deacon - an electronic artist I've been listening to lately. It's electronic, but it's easy to "get." Just an awesome sound. "True Thrush" and "Paddling Ghost" are good tracks to start with.

Of Montreal - I'm a little late to this party, but they're the realest, freshest psychadelic rock I've heard in a while. "Belle Glade Missionaries" is a good start.  ***Touring this fall

Los Campesino - Rock band with a lot of electronic beats + synths. Great sound, pretty upbeat. Start with "By Your Hand."

Folk/Country/Alt-Country/Acoustic country/pop:

Jamestown Revival - Utah is a fantastic album.  Saw these guys live at a tiny venue in Cincinnati and was blown away.  Really talented guys.  Anyone who likes the folksy/acoustic sound should listen to these guys.

Whiskey Myers

Josh Abbot Band

Green River Ordinance

Houndmouth

Kodaline

In the Rock genre, the ones I'm listening to lately that haven't already been mentioned are J. Roddy Walston & the Blues - Essential Tremors.  Really good album that I only recently discovered.  I've also been listening a ton to the REM Unplugged 1991/2001 collection released recently.

My bad (obviously)!  I was just mindlessly typing here at work and didn't bother proofreading my post.  Thanks for the correction.

Next time they're close I'll definitely go see them.  Stumbled upon them via Google Music app's "related artists" section and fell in love.  Take It As It comes plays pretty much daily on my phone.

J roddy has been on nonstop rotation since I saw them at Bonnaroo this year and they tore it up there, both performances. Essential tremors is great and their self titled album, the one that proceeded Essential Tremors, is fantastic as well. They offer a brand of old school, mostly piano driven rock and roll. Highly recommended

Another Hip Hop recommendation, the Dr. Octagon (Kool Keith w/ Dan the Automator) album Dr. Octagonecologyst. Strange, trippy, weird alt-hip hop. The beats and lyrics are different, but gripping and very different from anything you've heard.

Chvrches has quickly become one of my favorite groups.  There is not a song on The Bones of What You Believe that I do not like.  I've been listening to the album basically since it came out and still find every track amazing.  Since you are a fan of groups with female vocalists, I'll recommend the group Broods... Relatively new...They are dropping an album soon and have released a very strong EP as well.

I love female vocalists, especially when it is of the synth pop variety.

Thanks for the recommendation, I'm going to check them out. Looks like they are from NZ. There has been lots of great dream-pop type music coming from AUS and NZ this year.

Rodrigo y Gabriela are pretty darn awesome

So are Strunz and Farah, a very eclectic classical guitar duo with rock, jazz, flamenco, latin influences.

I've been listening to these guys a lot lately.

You're not the only one.  Big death metal fan here.  Not a huge fan of Fallujah, but I'll be seeing them in a few weeks on the Summer Slaughter Tour.

These threads always make me feel old. Most of the bands that get posted I've never even heard of, and when I check some of them out on youtube, they make me wish I didn't have ears.

Right.  I feel out of the loop until I check into some of the bands listed, and then I'm glad to be out of the loop.  I'm not saying there aren't some good bands out there, but most of the major label and mainstream stuff is just empty throwaway garbage.  No substance, no soul.

I like me some Gary Clark Jr. Album is called Black and Blu. He is amazing on guitar. I saw him at Bonnaroo a few years back. Also his voice is incredible. Highly recommend it.

Last year we bonded over 21 Pilots and Jake Bugg,  (which got her into some Johhny Cash, Dylan) and The Cure. She was so inspired that she bought an electric guitar and is getting pretty good :)

Looking forward to Artic Monkeys, Black Keys and The Kooks this year's year show.

I like the old school bands that are really talented musicians such as Rush and Emerson, Lake, and Palmer but realize my breed is dying off,lol...

Indiana Blue

but I'm just catching up with some old jam bands.  love Umphrey McGee, moe and even some old Widespread Panic.  Still enjoy Trey on guitar regardless of who he's playing with.  Phish live is still like going back to the 70's to see a Dead show.

In a band that does old classic rock - so I still find that a great way to feel great!

I've seen those four bands more times than I care to admit. I'm debating going to see Phish in Charlotte this Friday. They are always a good time, and from the recordings I've heard of this summer tour so far, they sound on point. Add to the fact that "Fuego" is their best studio effort in a long time, and they are a must see for me this summer.
