"hate the south"...how can you hate an entire region?

comments like this aren't even worth my time.  I guess anytime someone is shot in Detroit, Saginaw, Flint etc. are shot because they felt "disrespected", people by your logic should hate the state of Michigan

I'm not surprised that a football fan killed another over a game. What does surprise me was that the killer & the victim were both women. That's more of what I'd expect out of male fans of football. Sad tragedy. It's just a game, people!

It's really not all of them. Many of my closest friends, a number of my employees, etc. are Bama fans. They root for their team like we do. However, there is a very large element of the population of this State that is uneducated, has limited prospects and have a bizzare world view that has their very sense of self worth tied directly to Alabama's football program. The truth of the matter is that many of these people resent their fellow fans that went to college, even the University of Alabama. But the Tide, that is worth caring about. It is absolutely surreal.

Agreed. OSU fans are more likely to beat you up outside their stadium, but Alabama fans are more likely to kill a fellow fan for not being fan enough. The fringe of Alabama fans are OSU fans on steroids.I spoke in an earlier post when posters talked about having good experiences with Bama fans at Bowl games, Jerry world etc. I think the Bama fans who are well off enough to go to games, etc. are better than OSU fans. It is the people who treat George Wallace (along with Bear Bryant) with reverence to this day that are the scary ones. I will say that Auburn does not have to send out warnings to fans not to wear their colors to Bryant Denny.

As you might have guessed, AL.com is all over this (HERE).

According to this, the victim's sister (there is a link to more detailed information in the story above) had an account of the story which went as follows:

" Neketa Shepherd said her sister was an Alabama fan, but even more than Alabama, she loved The Miami Heat. After the game ended, she and her sister were joking around, not about Alabama's loss, but about the Miami Heat. Briskey, Neketa Shepherd said, apparently took their joking the wrong way and became mad that they weren't more upset over Alabama's loss."

My wife made a good point - that Bama fan is going to now be wearing orange.

But seriously, they just don't have perspective down there. They have escalated from trees to people.

I really do not know how to respond to this. I keep telling myself that this is extremely troubling. Then I think to myself that maybe people in the south just need a secondary hobby, for the times when things just don't work out the way you want.

Needless to say, I'm glad I am not in Dixie. I am sure this is neither the first or last time something like this will happen over a football game down there.

Murders take place for countless reasons. Anger, fear, jealousy, socioeconomic status, unemployment/employment, debt, etc.

I'm not trying to be a smart ass. Yes a death is a death no matter the reason. However, this woman was murdered over the loss of a local university football team. Seemingly neither party had a water on the game or anything that would/could provoke such behavior. Basically, she was killed because she wasn't seen as mournful enough that the team (Bama) lost. Haven't heard of that one yet here above the Mason-Dixon.

Has it happened before; more then likely. Does it occur fairly more often in the south; you bet.

Something along those lines is fair game.

"Then I think to myself that maybe people in the south just need a secondary hobby."

Now you're lumping everyone in the South into a stereotype.  I don't think that's helpful, and as you can see, something attracted some posters on this board to live down there.

I am as appalled as you are by the situation, believe me. The suburb of Birmingham in which it occurred is just a few miles from my home and the poor woman had three children. But ironically your post discussed many of what I believe to be the underlying reasons for this element of the Alabama fan base including anger, fear, jealousy and most of all socioeconomic status. The attitude is "I'm never going to amount to anything nor will my kids, but we still have our Tide." It's really quite sad, when you look beyond people who do genuine harm like this awful woman or even Harvey Updyke.

You have to remember that this is the city where Paul Finebaum and his Jerry Springer show rejects live. It is an unbelievable tragedy, but nothing some of these people do surprises me.
