In June of 1963, Gov. George Wallace did his famous/infamous "stand in the schoolhouse door" to prevent three African-American kids from becoming the first black students at the University of Alabama, which had actively worked to prevent the admission of qualified black students. After the Alabama National Guard at the scene were federalized by President Kennedy, Wallace stepped aside after delivering his speech in defense of segregation.
Now, fifty years later, African-Americans are killing each other over a perceived lack of support of the University of Alabama. It's a peculiarly crazy form of "progress."
