OT - Mr. Hockey (The Gordie Howe Story) Premieres on Hallmark at 9:00pm

Submitted by Cold War on

Regarded as one of the greatest hockey players of all time, Gordie Howe (Michael Shanks) was finished playing hockey after his retirement from the National Hockey League. When he is offered a contract – brokered by his wife Colleen (Kathleen Robertson) – to play alongside his sons in the newly formed World Hockey Association (WHA), the 45-year-old legend prepares for a surprising comeback.

Together with sons Mark (Andrew Herr) and Marty (Dylan Playfair) and the support of his wife, Gordie relocates his family and returns to the rink to play professional hockey with the Houston Aeros. Though many skeptics label this as “the biggest publicity stunt in hockey history,” Gordie proves his critics wrong and attempts to accomplish the unthinkable of playing professional hockey and winning a championship with his sons. For one of the most beloved and iconic professional hockey stars of his era, this is Gordie Howe’s second chance to once again become “Mr. Hockey.” As the Howes hit the ice, they come together to discover the power of family, courage and faith...

of all time.  no question.  nobody could skate, score, and fight like gordie.  he and my dad were friends and had been since the 50's.  when i was a kid he gave me a nickname that never went away - redneck.  he said that was because when i was on the ice the other team was scoring so much the red goal light was giving me a sunburn.   you don't shake that nickname when it comes from a living legend.  fortunately nobody on michigan's team knew that one and i wasn't about to tell them.

years later, when tiger stadium had it's last game in sept of '99, he stopped by to say hello to us all.  that was the last time i saw him, though my father and he were buddies til dad died 2 years ago.

The youngest son lived in Apt 9 one floor below me in Viscount Apartments. Nice guy. Married my buddy's ex-girl friend. Met her at one of our parties!

I've  had the fortune of meeting some Michigan sports icons over the year. None were nicer than Mr. Hockey and Ernie Harwell. When God made these men he definitely threw away the mold.

I work with Gordie's son Murray at Toledo Hospital, Gordie comes by to visit on occasion, It's funny to watch people do a double take when they see Gordie Howe walking down the hall of Toledo hospital. I Both Gordie and his son are class acts.

at the site of the old Olympia Arena. They had just built a National Guard facility on the property and had a dedication ceremony with a plaque. I was with the Michigan State Police and represented the department at the program. Afterwards there was a small luncheon and I was sitting alone when Howe and Lindsay came over and asked if they could eat with me. Geordie Howe looked like he could still play and that was in early 90's.. They were so down to earth and Ted Lindsay looked like he had 1000 stitches in his face. That's probably close. Lol. Great players and great gentlemen.
