OT- Movie talk

Submitted by ijohnb on
OK, so I'm bored. Looking for some pointless conversation. Anybody.... Godfather saga, (Parts 1 & 2, 3 doesn't really count) A little overrated. My last viewing, a litte underwhlemed, I must say. Its good in the same way that Jerry West was, ya know? On the other hand (and completely unrelated), 25TH HOUR, A SPIKE LEE JOINT. Anybody else think this movie is solid gold? Where is the Academy here? Norton, f#@king brilliant!

of all time is still Gladiator with Russell Crowe. I am so pumped for the new Robin Hood that he is doing with the Gladiator director. I haven't been this excited about a movie in years! I am also a much bigger Scarface fan than The God Father movies.

with all due respect to the OP, Godfather 1&2 are the best films I've seen. [in the spirit of full disclosure: took twofilm classes at Michigan and wrote a 10 or 12 page paper on a scene from GF 2 (where Vito Corleone-- DeNiro-- knocks off Fanucci).] incidentally (and to the OP's credit in re 25th Hour) part of one of those film classes was mandatory attendance to Spike Lee as he spoke at the University following the release of 'School Daze'. He's a brilliant director. we've got vaults of awesome films in the usa.

Aside from the classics that everyone likes, my favorite movie is probably 28 Days Later. The indie feel and music in the movie was just great. It actually had a storyline other than hot 20-somethings get chased around and dismembered. 28 Weeks Later was ok. It really lost the indie feel that I liked about 28 Days. The ending was pure gold though.

Letters from Iwo Jima. Best war film of all time and it's not even a discussion. Makes Saving Private Ryan look hokey in my opinion. Maybe the best movie Eastwood's ever been affiliated with (definitely his best directing).

In saving private Ryan I don't think the object was for people to leave the film thinking "What a great movie, that was awesome!". The intent of that movie was to let people have an idea what the war was really about, and what it was like to be there. I saw both movies and when I left saving private Ryan I felt as though I had a glimpse into what guys like my grandfathers (who both fought overseas) experienced at that time. I gave me some empathy for the soldiers and familes of those men and women who fought and died in those wars. Never, at any point, did I think "This is an awesome movie" and I don't think the directors intended for people to have that reaction. In comparing the two, I think Saving Private Ryan wins hands down as I believe it achieved what it set out do during its production, which wasn't to be "an awesome movie", but to give people some insight as to the actual events during the war without making it look glamourous.

Kudos to Big Boutros on the Heat mention. Cops and robbers with Pacino chasing De Niro and intense drama throughout. It has to be my favorite movie of all-time. Michael Mann just makes great movies, The Insider, Collateral, I even thought Miami Vice was pretty badass. Now this may make me a huge nerd, but #2 on the list has to be Donnie Darko. Incredible movie.

All the classics are listed on here are great so I decided to take a different route. There are some movies out there that are so ridiculous and bad, they just kick ass. One of those, and my favorite one is Big Trouble in Little China. Jack Burton and the Pork Chop Express. It is so bad, yet it just really kicks ass.

When some wild-eyed, eight-foot-tall maniac grabs your neck, taps the back of your favorite head up against the barroom wall, and he looks you crooked in the eye and he asks you if ya paid your dues, you just stare that big sucker right back in the eye, and you remember what ol' Jack Burton always says at a time like that: "Have ya paid your dues, Jack?" "Yessir, the check is in the mail

The movie in 2009 that I thought was amazing was District 9. I know it wasn't a movie that no one saw, but I didn't feel like people talked about it enough as one of the best movies of the year.

It is nominated for Best Picture, so it's hard to say it's underappreciated. It has zero chance of winning though, that's pretty much between Avatar and the Hurt Locker. I know people have been trashing Avatar's script, but one of these 2 movies will most likely win it. I guess anything can happen with 10 nominees, though

You can't talk about great movies without mentioning Seven. The movie loses a little bit though after you see it once, and realize the ending. Nothing beats Brad Pitt's special delivery in the oh my god they went there category. The Sixth Sense is right up there too for me.

Can't believe this hasn't been mentioned yet, but The Usual Suspects is my favorite movie... Kevin Spacey's performance is amazing, the last 5-10 minutes of this film are just epic.

As far as serious movies go I would have to say these would be some of my favorites: Glory- Denzel, Broderick, and Freeman are all awesome in this. Tombstone- Something Val Kilmer was actually good in. Crash- Maybe the best ensemble cast movie ever. Great plot too. Eternal Sunshine of the spotless mind- Jim Carrey's best work in my opinion. Show's a lot of versatility in this movie. Miracle-It's hard to choreograph hockey and get someone who can do a great Herb Brooks, but the folks at Disney pulled it off. If I am just kind of joking though I say Monster Squad.

as a movie, no Jay and Silent Bob isn't awesome... but seeing all the characters from previous movies and how much fun they had to have making it, and all the old inside jokes? It's amazing (assuming you've seen all the other Kevin Smith movies)
