One of the most pointless rebrandings ever. Note that the f is not capitalized. Syfy. Reminds me of "Syphilis."

I guess maybe the idea was to somehow embed the "fantasy" genre into the name, since a lot of what they do has nothing to do with science fiction.

I think it was so they could trademark the name.  They couldn't trademark 'SciFi' since it's already a commonly used term.  So they changed the spelling into something unique that they could brand and make some $ of off.  But yeah, it's pretty terrible.

I actually was really excited to see that movie, not as good as i hoped. Now a bad movie would be the 40 year old virgin, who nocked up sarah marshal and felt superbad about it

No matter what, it will never match the genius of Shark Attack 3: Megalodon.

David Lean just WISHES he could've gotten the rights to that. The Ben Hur of shark attack movies.

I don't understand how there is a market for these pieces of shit. Who actually watches them? Instead of making these stupid flicks they should save up so they have a decent budget to make a REAL movie.

Early Saturday morning, a little hung over, terrible movies, but very funny.  Because of this, they should also be on TBS, where I think, rebranded as comedies, they might actually find a market.  Now as for that market you're speaking of that actually watches them for the entertainment they're intended to be... though a very good looking Winnie Cooper was in one I saw a couple monthes ago that had some very funny moments...

As for your last comments, if they saved up money they still couldn't compete with a real movie.  I loved District 9, and it didn't have a huge budget, but even with the budget it had and if Syfy saved money, they wouldn't see something like that.  The movie would still automatically lose respect and be dismissed as a movie that could make a cinema release.  Because of this, and the fact that they just need to fill time slots, taking up 2 hours with a crappy movie, to them, probably makes sense.  Lifetime does the same thing as far as I'm concerned, but my mom loves those crappy movies so maybe some dude I've never spoken to really loves Syfy.  But that may be why I don't know him...

Since a lot of Syfy "original" movies are just bad rehashes of real Hollywood films, comedian Patrice O'Neal did a great bit on the Opie & Anthony show riffing on how the channel could remake and rename certain movies to avoid any intellectual property issues.  Some examples were: Jurassic Park="Dinosaur Forest"; Terminator= "Robot Killer From the Future"; Predator= "Space Jungle Hunter"; Back to the Future= "Time Car"; and my favorite, Iron Man= "Steel Dude"
