OT: Movember
Dear community, I'm taking a guess that everyone here is either a male or knows someone that is. In the spirit of looking out for one another, I hope you take the time to consider November's place as Men's Health Awareness Month. Believe me, I gave all due respect to saving the ta-tas last month.
I have an uncle that's a survivor and a grandfather that wasn't. I'm in the process of growing what will most likely be the world's shittiest mustache, but I'm doing it none-the-less. We all have our causes that we try to sprinkle a few dollars across, and this is one of mine. I hope you'll consider a suitable recipient of a few cups of Starbucks or that you'll grow a wicked 'stache to show your support.
May you and/or all the men in your life be well.
And, of course, Go Blue!

Last year, we did this company-wide and close to 400-500 people from VPs on down participated and we're hoping to do better this year. We also raised several thousand dollars as well and the company matched the contribution to research, which was very sweet of them.

I can't grow a mustache but my beard is Rick Ross-esque. So, I'm supporting that way. Don't plan on shaving for a while.

I'm 3 days in. I'm starting with a beard and working down to a mustache. Good luck. I'll post a picture once it gets less creepy.

I'm doing the same thing. I've never tried to grow a beard, so this should be interesting. I have blonde hair so it's already looking quite...disgusting.
I'm hoping I'll end up just as hard as Jax in SoA...

Fuck cancer.
Sky blue is the color for prostate cancer awareness. My employer prefers no facial hair so I'll just wear sky blue whenever I can.

I'm sure that you've been shaving for a year now and cut yourself both times.
November 4th, 2014 at 9:12 PM ^
I think they are pretty much the same thing, right? As far as men's health awareness? The weird thing was when my wife said she was going to do no-shave November with me.

thanks for the reminder.

If I tried to grow a 'stache I'm worried I would look like this guy

The dastardly buckstash. The scourge of central Ohio.
November 4th, 2014 at 9:25 PM ^
So when did it become MoVember instead of No-Shave November?! Are they the same thing?!
I'll hang up and listen.
November 4th, 2014 at 9:31 PM ^
made the movember awareness campaign in 2004 and it took over in the last 2-3 years. fwiw, i hadn't heard of it until two years ago.
November 4th, 2014 at 9:31 PM ^
I believe Movember was actually the one that was first.
November 5th, 2014 at 11:42 AM ^
Yeah mustaches are awful... They don't look good on anyone ever except Carlos Spicyweiner and Tom Selleck and that was just because he had a Tigers cap on. Thousands of epic assholes have sported staches, from Saddam, to Hitler, to Teddy Roosevelt my God did he have body odor issues... Just because Old Spice wasn't invented yet was no excuse Ted. You can't spell "Theodore" without "odor."
I would have preferred Novembeard.
November 4th, 2014 at 9:25 PM ^
awareness campaign. one of the more vile examples of sexualizing something that has nothing to do with sex.
that being said, i cheated and utilized the remnants of my extremely long beard to create a ridiculous conquistador look.
November 5th, 2014 at 1:10 AM ^
That was extremely cheap and lame.
November 5th, 2014 at 9:18 AM ^
That sentiment irks me because it tries to make it about how straight men feel about boobs, and not about, you know, people. As another poster said, it very much cheapens it.
That said, why bring it up at all? This isn't an "Us vs. Them" on cancer awareness. Just because one campaign is more successful doesn't cheapen the other.
November 5th, 2014 at 11:04 AM ^
mentioning how he paid proper respect to "save the ta tas" month rubbed me the wrong way.
November 5th, 2014 at 11:11 AM ^
Re-reading, I didn't make it clear. I was agreeing with you and trying to expand on your points. I had no issues with your post.
November 5th, 2014 at 2:58 PM ^
who is a breast cancer survivor wears the shirt. It's clever, though to your point, not universally appealing or appreciated. In my friends case, it's how she has chosen to support lightening a typically dark conversation.
November 4th, 2014 at 9:38 PM ^
No shave November is way better. Let it all go
November 4th, 2014 at 9:45 PM ^
Stupid AC
November 4th, 2014 at 9:53 PM ^
I'm not with you on that one. As someone who is truly rocking a stellar stache right now (for the first time ever), but has often grown a beard, I can absolutely say that the stache takes more of a commitment and makes more of a statement.
November 4th, 2014 at 10:04 PM ^
Looks way better, and you won't look like a creepy ass pedaphile.
November 5th, 2014 at 1:17 AM ^
I agree the beard looks better, but that isn't the point. The point is to create conversation and raise awareness. The beard doesn't do that.
November 5th, 2014 at 6:45 AM ^
People wear mustaches all the time... They have no idea if you're doing it for a cause or not. And when they see you, they will have no idea what you're trying to make them aware of anyways! Get out of here.
November 5th, 2014 at 2:02 PM ^
Thanks for your opinion, but I can assure you from personal experience that you're wrong in saying that people won't know what it means. Way, way off base on that one. Sure, plenty of people have mustaches, but the ones who do this aren't those people, so it's kind of ... Well... Obviously different.

I am a new member of the prostate cancer survivors club this year at the relatively young age of 53. With all due respect to mi93 I believe I will have the shittiest mustache come November 30. If you are over 50 with no family history of cancer or over 40 with a family history go get checked out. I am living proof that if you catch it early you can beat it. If you are nervous about the check up just find a doc with skinny fingers. Old joke for a not so funny disease.
November 4th, 2014 at 11:56 PM ^
Keep fighting.
And compared to the exams my missuz goes through, I can handle a little gloved-finger "fun" every few years.
November 5th, 2014 at 10:18 AM ^
for sharing that and congratulations for beating cancer. I'm approaching 50 and have nev er been checked. I'm due for a physical in January and will get it done.
November 4th, 2014 at 10:54 PM ^
Carcinoid cancer survivor here. Odds are 50% of the board will hear what I heard in 2008-you have cancer. It sucks but it's beatable. Nice post OP
November 4th, 2014 at 11:22 PM ^
I'm really glad you're doing well. Go Blue.
November 4th, 2014 at 11:21 PM ^
My dad is a prostate and colon cancer survivor.
My son, a junior UM neuroscience major, founded Code Blue - a student run charitable organization for prostate cancer research. I'm not shaving to support them. I hope you'll join me.
November 4th, 2014 at 11:58 PM ^
please share so we've got an option for the board if so inclined to share some dollars.
And please tell your son thank you.
November 5th, 2014 at 12:04 AM ^
The board isn't a charity forum but a worthwhile cause will always be welcome. I don't know if you're aware mi93, but Michigan hockey participates in Movember. There are details on Twitter and I'm sure elsewhere.

Fuck "Movember", and fuck wearing pink for breast cancer awareness. I was actually reprimanded at work last year for refusing to participate in this nonsensical ritual.
November 5th, 2014 at 1:05 AM ^
Yeah bro, you really showed them! I bet you really made a difference! Great job!
November 5th, 2014 at 2:39 AM ^
Maybe you got reprimanded for your sunny disposition?
November 5th, 2014 at 10:23 AM ^
if you're serious or just trolling. It's one thing to not participate, it's another to say fuck Movember or wearing pink. If you or someone you love ever has to deal with cancer you might change your tone asshole and appreciate the effort and money raised by others.

My dad has prostate cancer. No you guys have to understand, my Dad is probably the coolest guy I've ever met. I'm 34 years old and I can easily say that he's my best friend. The first time he was dx'd he did chemo and radiation which did what it was supposed to do. Then the cancer came back and he ended up having his prostate and bladder both removed. And if you were to see him in the street ( ask Seth ), you would never know it. He's 60 years old and absolutely a beast still. I spent all summer helping him cut, split and stack wood.
So Yeah I won't be shaving.
November 5th, 2014 at 8:30 AM ^
Do it for your Dad and all the other guys, if I could.
Fuck Cancer.
November 5th, 2014 at 8:01 AM ^
I've been growing this bad boy since Friday. I'm hoping it fills in.
November 5th, 2014 at 8:05 AM ^
"Nonetheless" is one word and I am amazed at how many people do not know that.
November 5th, 2014 at 3:56 PM ^
It's okay OP, the Grammar Police are here to save the day. Who cares that he hyphenated a word that shouldn't be? What surprises me is that they're are people (like yourself) on here who point out every grammatical error, no matter how minor. This is a thread about raising awareness for cancer and mental illness, go Grammar Police another thread.
