OT-Most miserable sporting event you have ever attended? (Weather)

Submitted by Trump on

While watching this Green Bay game dip down into the negatives, I began to think about the most miserable sporting event I had ever attended. I would have to say the 2006 Northwestern football game where we were smacked by freezing rain all game long. Fans decided huddling together near the bathrooms was a smarter choice than watching Michigan win a boring game 17-3.

For me, it would have to be the 1995 Michigan-Purdue game, as it was not only a pretty miserable day weatherwise but I am pretty sure that, from the walk from the car to the game and then later back to the car, we experienced all known forms of precipitation at temperatures within earshot of freezing the whole day. Even in three layers, that pretty much sucked for an outdoor experience, but we did win, so it was somehow worth it.

Saginaw, MI. November 1973. I was (mostly) on the sidelines. Freezing rain the whole game. That was miserable. Been to Michigan games where perhaps the weather was worse, but on those occasions I was in the stands bundled up with whatever gear I needed, and probably with a pint of schnaps at hand...

Although most fans have said that it was a great experience, working the Winter Classic was hell for a lot of us ushers. I was on my feet from 8:15 to 6:30 in 12 degree weather. I was on the Maple Leafs side, and dealing with drunk Canadians trying to cut through sections illegally or stand in the area reserved for the handicapped forced me to miss essentially the first two periods of play. Afterwards, the buses that were supposed to take the event staff back to Wolverine Tower (where we park) were gridlocked because of the snow, so I had to walk 2 and a half miles back to my car. Overall, it was miserable.

...freezing rain, sleet, snow and a wind chill that reached 20 below. It was amazing...you could barely see the field from the student section. This was worst weather I have experienced period...let alone at a sporting event.

Was played in freezing cold with a light mist most of the night...Clemens started for the Astros, only lasted a couple innings...Paulie Konerko hit a go-ahead grand slam in the 7th and Scott Podsednik hit a walk off homer in the bottom of the ninth

My wedding day.  I wisely spent the day getting married instead of watching that game.  That option being off the board means I've had to find other things to occupy my time during UM games over the past 6+ years.

'08 Northwestern game. Only time I've ever left a game early. Made the mistake of wearing my sneakers that day and not boots, and my feet were paying for it by halftime. Left the stadium, went to Quickie a burger and sat there for 45 mins letting my feet warm back up.

2008 Northwestern. rain, freezing rain, snow and then back in reverse. only time I have ever left a game early (had to drive to Kalamazoo for the Michigan-Western hockey game). I didn't warm up until Battle Creek.

Then I had Akron (got burned to a crisp, plus Akron), Indiana (frozen from head to toe), and I also traveled to East Lansing for the Michigan State game, after which I couldn't feel any part of my body until about midnight.  That wasn't a terribly fun afternoon.

Only because we all totally didn't plan on staying much past half time, everyone of us had stuff or work to do so we all didn't plan on a long stay. Well it was very hot and sunny and my pale Irish skin fried!!! It was a totally frustrating game and I got a heat headache and sunburn as icing on the cake. But that was more game than weather.

A little off the beaten path, I ran a 10-ish mile leg of a 3-day run across Michigan relay up and down hills in 95+ degree weather in July.  It was basically all dust and grime, the sun beamed down the whole time, and it was stifling humidity.  The only time I've honestly been worried about my health after a race.

In terms of football games attended, there was a game against Purdue I want to say in 1999 that wasn't particularly terrible compared to 1995 but was this weird snow/rain mix that made everyone uncomfortable.  I remember being wedged with some alumni and being absolutely miserable because they were loud, fat guys who squirmed for the whole game and basically scooted me around the bleacher.

2008 at ND. Beat down in a driving rainstorm. Game was effectively over in the first ten minutes, thanks to approximately 15 fumbles by our guys. Just awful.

Many years ago in high school when I was playing soccer ... We played Brighton at their place during regionals. It was like 10 degrees that night, under the lights, with sleet, and the field was sloppy from rain during the day. I have never been sooooo cold. But we won 3-2, so that was cool. I was the goalkeeper - had to keep breathing hot air on my hands and jogging around the 18 yard box to stay warm.

A soccer field was a waste of a potentially good infield. My grandfather played all the way up to the Mud Hens, so they were big baseball fans. I've got nothing against soccer, but this post made me think of that saying, I heard it a lot growing up.

'95 Purdue is the winner.  '08 Northwestern is in second place.  Both were miserably wet and cold.

Third place goes, I think, to '92 Illinois - very cold, very snowy.  The snowiest game I can remember.  Playing conditions were a mess and we fumbled over, and over, and over.  We finally needed to make a long FG to tie against a team we would have demolished on a clear day.

2013 Michigan @ Michigan State. In the upper deck with the rain and wind coming right down in our faces. We left at the end of the third quarter because we just new it wasn't worth staying. #fireborges

11/22/1970, 11 years old, Met Stadium Vikings 10 Packers 3. I looked it up and the weather description was gale force driven snow and the wind chill 30 below. I sat in the bleacher end zone with my dad in my rubber boots. Could only last until half time

Vs Wisconsin, November 16, 1968. Ron Johnson was so cold he set a rushing record that still stands, 347 yards just trying to stay warm.

The Winter Classic would have been a close second, but clothing has come a long way since '68.

The rained-out Western Game was certainly not the coldest, but it is notable for being the first time I remember us discussing how nice a cool shower was going to feel, just before we drove all the way home with the heater blasting.

The only game that sticks out in my mind as truly miserable was the 2002 Wisconsin game. It was the week before the OSU game and I remember sitting in section 13 about 70 rows up shivering uncontrollably for 3 hours.

Between the rain, sleet, and snow, it's 1995 Purdue, hands down.  I was in the band and it was horrendous.  The rain from earlier had soaked our uniforms and gloves and our gloves then started to freeze.  The field was all mud.  When we got off the field after pregame those of us in the flags had pre-frostbite setting in and couldn't move our hands.  It was incredibly painful.  Reserves had to take our gloves off and we were allowed to use the football players' portable heaters that they had out on the sideline to warm up our hands.

Michigan State that same year was also horrible in terms of the cold, and Virginia that year was by far the hottest game ever.  So, 1995 was definitely rough when it came to the weather.

I was soaking wet and it was like 31 degrees. I stayed the whole time and was absolutely frozen by the end. Had to stand in the hot shower for like 30 minutes when I got home till I felt like I was half warmed up again
