OT - Most annoying: Crosby or Putin?

Submitted by Kalamazoo Blue on
Crosby vaulted into the "most annoying" lead yesterday afternoon for reasons well-documented on this board. Then only hours later Putin catches up to him. During the closing ceremonies they played the Russian national anthem (because they host the next winter olympics). The NBC announcer explained that the Russians resurrected the old Soviet anthem about 10 years ago at the urging of Putin. I've never liked Putin, but now he's really starting to annoy me. Next November I fully expect to see both these guys in the front row of the 'shoe dressed head to toe in scarlet and grey alongside the big, bald stooge with the buckeye necklace. I hope all three are crying their eyes out. MGoExtracredit to anyone who can photoshop that image. Monday morning rant over.

But it's worth repeating: Crosby is most annoying because the sports media can't seem to talk about anyone else. This was most clearly demonstrated during the Olympics, when his name kept coming up during a women's hockey game. Absent that sort of overexposure, he'd still be annoying to fans of opposing teams, but he probably wouldn't inspire near the level of hatred he does now. Like Tebow, this isn't really his fault entirely (unless he's been taking media lessons from Favre), but he's stuck with it now.

I thought it was just a little over the top (sarcasm) when after the game they interviewed Ryan Miller as MVP (I know, I know) and when they went back to the announcers they said something to the effect of, Miller gave a nice interview but Crosby would have done as good a job or better. Sheeesh.

Was just in the right spot at the right time on the goal. Iginla made a nice cycle, got a good short pass off to Crosby and he put it home. Miller read it as best as he could but he got beat. It was a beautiful play and a prime example of how cycling in hockey especially around the goal helps to score more goals in the game. I applaud play style like that because all coaches know that a cycle causes the defense to man up on the man carrying the puck so instead he leaves his zone to cover him along side the boards leaving one attacker open for a pass to get a good opportunity on net.

It is hard to dislike Sid the Kid. He is a genuinely nice guy. Loyal. Good with kids. A small town lad who keeps in touch with his roots. My knock against him is he is dull. Crosby has to be the most boring superstar ever to have graced the planet. You had to like that overtime goal too! :-) "The true north strong and free!"

I heard it from a good source that Cindy Crosby is Putin's love child and Putin is annoyed that Cindy chose to play for the canadian team even though Putin was going to pull strings with the politbureau and make Cindy an official Soviet citizen.

Back to the original topic, Crosby annoys me more than Putin. Until Putin plays hockey I could care less about him. Also, who loses sleep over Putin switching the national anthem back to the Soviet anthem? I guess I'm not sorry for not buying into the anti-commie propaganda.

I'm not bitter. I definitely would have liked the US to win, but I like our friendly Canadian neighbors up North, plus they're so funny-looking. So let's see: a Canadian hockey player who might be too much of a media darling (seems to be the criticism) vs. a former KGB director who tries to restrict democracy in Russia and elsewhere (i.e. Ukraine), deals with America's enemies, and authorizes heavy-handed response against terrorists with little to no regard for civilian casualties, particularly when those civilians are the hostages (Beslan and theater hostage crises)? Definitely Crosby. (Sorry if I'm upsetting the no-politics agreement, but I hope I'm reasonable and not too divisive. Hey, it's not domestic politics.)

Israel--there are very strong feelings on each side. Trust me, we absolutely do not want to go there. Also, any discussion about global politics will eventually shift back to domestic because it will lead into a conversation re: which president had the better foreign policy, troop deployment, and national security. Putin's a fairly loathsome tyrant, but I don't really fault him over the anthem. They actually only brought back the music to the anthem; they wrote new, non-Communist lyrics for it.
