Wasn't it just a couple years ago when we were applauding Texas because they were hiring the best coordinators and setting up an actual coching tree?  They had Muschamp, Diaz, etc. and looked to be on their way to a nice future after Mack Brown.  Now Diaz has flamed out, Muschamp stopped waiting for Brown to retire, and the program is Michigan-2007.

Narduzzi should get a job somewhere, but Texas and USC are going to demand high-end, proven head coaching commodities, not someone without experience. I happen to disagree with that viewpoint, but it is what it is.

Expect the usual pipe dream names like Jon Gruden, Chris Peterson, and Nick Saban. After that doesn't go anywhere, expect Charlie Strong to maybe bite and then a guy like Fitzgerald to take a pass. Then, who knows, Texas could run at David Shaw and both could go after Bill O'Brien. Gary Anderson at Wisconsin would be a great pick, but I'm not sure he'd pull a Todd Graham.

hiring Tressel would be a big mistake. He's never left the state of Ohio. He has lots of connections there , would be starting from scratch in Texas. I wouldn't downplay the difficulty of adjusting to a new culture either. I'd be surprised if their new coach doesn't have ties to the state.

Whelp, another major head coaching search, another Les Miles raise. Wouldn't be surprised if they offered him. He was at Colorado, at OK State twice, and with the Dallas Cowboys. He might jump at a big enough contact in those even-more-fertile recruiting grounds. He'd own the Big 12 every year, too, instead of just sharing the SEC.

It has been rumored here in Texas for years that Mack Brown would move into the AD spot whenever Dodds retired. This retirement is undoubtedly occurring so that Brown can step down as head coach without losing face and w/o UT having to pay him a massive buy-out by firing him. Expect UT to go hard after Chris Peterson of Boise State. While they may go after Kevin Sumlin, there is no way he takes the job.

The AD part is true. After the experience Chuck Harstens (spell?) had, I doubt Peterson has any interest in coming to UT. Harstens was the former offensive coordinator at Boise St who came to UT after Greg Davis was canned and has since been forced to accept Major Applewhite as co-offensive coordinator. Not a good situation behind closed doors from my info. The sad/funny part to me, is every UT fan I know, that would be everyone I know in Austin, thinks they can get any coach they want. All they have to do is decide who the lucky chap will be.

I think there's a handful of college coaches who would be difficult or impossible for Texas to pull because it's unlikely the Texas job would be an improvement over their current situations (Saban, Meyer, Hoke, Fitzgerald, Richt, probably Brian Kelly and Al Golden) and then there are the NFL guys (current or aspiring) who just wouldn't be interested.  Other than that, though, I think Texas probably can get most anyone they want.  It's not like the usual rebuilding job; with the right coach, Texas has the talent to instantly compete for championships on any level.

I agree with you completely, the problem is, the general UT fan sentiment is that they can get anyone, not most anyone. They would tell you Hoke isn't good enough so they would never go after him, but if they did, he would come.

They do the same thing that a lot of M fans did when Hoke got hired. There' ll be WTF posts and bitching about how they wanted someone else. Maybe ShaggyBevo will have a "No Joke it's Coach X" post.

But, if the hire works out, they will all forget about it after about, oh, two seasons or so.

Not really sure why no one has even mentioned Art Briles. Petersen is fantastic, but he has already turned down "dream" jobs and seems to be a West Coast guy; Briles has turned the worst joke of a program in Baylor into a juggernaut. When Baylor annihilates Texas this year the buzz will be deafening.

In a state like Texas, having the relationships already established is not as big a deal. If you have the right personality (which Mack did/does) there are enough people associated with UT who will make sure the new coach has all the right connections. This why I think a high energy guy like Sweeny could be a real consideration. Think back to Mack's track record. He brought UNC back from the depths and could never quite get over the hump losing that one or two critical games a year at a "lesser" program. Sounds a lot like Dabo at Clemson.

As dumb as this will sound, the general feeling is that Briles is not good enough to coach UT. I know, scoreboard, but the general thinking is, if he had to go to Baylor, he isn't good enough for UT. There is also a bit of bad blood between the current UT football staff and Briles over some recruiting battles. Even with a new AD, the boosters won't forget about it. If UT goes outside their ranks, it will be very similar to when they hired Mack, a proven commodity from an established program, but one which still makes UT a step up job. I don't think Fitzgerald is a good fit at all. (Not saying he is a bad coach, just not a good fit for UT). You can forget about any other Big 12 school. I doubt they go after any SEC guys, because that would be too humiliating to have to steal from the conference TA&M left for (unless they try to bring Muschamp back, which I doubt). That leaves the ACC, B1G, or Pac12. Maybe they go after Dabo Sweeny if Clemson has a great year. Maybe they go after David Shaw. Maybe BO'B. Texas HS football is very much built around spread offenses and I think any new coach will have to be a defensive guy, like Brown was, but will accept running a more based spread offense.

A friend of mine who is a Boise State alum told me that Petersen's son, Sean, is a reason he will always stay. It's been many years since Sean, as a toddler, was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer and has been in remission. However, as any parent of a child with juvenile forms of cancer knows, once you find doctors who know you and your child and have earned your trust, there's not a job in the world worth the perceived risks. Sure, there are other doctors who are as good - and maybe better - in places like Los Angeles. But to Chris Petersen, I doubt it matters much.

Valenti and Foster were adamant on their show yesterday that Narduzzi would only leave MSU for a Texas type job and that Texas could very well come calling....I almost drove off the road.

that Saban will be at Texas next season. He's been at Bama for awhile now, can go into Texas next year and win 9-10; get a couple years of recruiting in that hot-bed and he'll win another Nat'l Title in a couple of seasons. This is who Saban is...
