that Pacquiao will win this in a decision. I think Manny lost once when he ate a punch when he was ahead on the scorecard, he learned from that and that would be how the woman beating illiterate would beat him on a counter shot. Manny knows he is fighting the best he has ever faced and it will take him being smarter on this one.

Crossing my fingers for a great fight.  I really hope they go toe to toe in an all out war.  OTOH, If Money dances all night long avoiding Manny, I'll be pissed after dropping $100.

Anyone shelling out for the PPV by definion no longer has money. I lucked out and a bar near me is showing it with no cover, hoping to see a Manny KO...

...and I'll start by saying my decisions would've been much different had this fight happened 4 years ago.  As I said in an earlier thread, I don't think this will be a fight that goes the distance and ends in a decision like many believe.  Floyd has been talking like he's going to be swinging and I'd imagine Manny doesn't want to let the judges play any role in this one.  I think, Manny comes out hot as Mayweather sits back for a couple rounds to see how he's going to handle him.  In the 3rd round Mayweather becomes aggressive and by the 8th round he lands one that Manny can't recover from. Anyways, the bets I placed are:

- 1st round won by Manny
- 1st round won by either fighter
- 3rd round won by Mayweather
- 3rd round won by either fighter
- under 8 1/2 rounds
- Manny wins by KO/TKO/DQ (small bet)
- Mayweather wins by KO/TKO/DQ (biggest bet)

There are a million and one reasons to hate Mayweather and I'd never defend the guy, but there are also plenty of reasons to hate Pacquiao. I'd probably say Pac is the lesser of two evils, but I don't exactly feel great rooting for either scumbag. I'm just going to try my best to disregard the cognitive dissonance and enjoy the fight.

Depends on your perspective I guess. I agree with you that beating women (plural) is far worse than whatever Manny has done, but holds a political position of power and wields it to oppress a certain class of people due to his religious views. I'm not interested in getting into the debate because of no politics and all that, but it isn't just words for this guy. He holds real power. Now is that worse than beating women? Like I said, I don't think so, but I'm not going to sit here and root for a man because he's not as bad as another bad guy.

buys already rich guys nice cars for their birthdays.  Manny has sent over 900 kids from his home province, one of the poorest in the Philippines, to college.

Also, his views are pretty typical for his country.  Backwards and outdated to progressives from the western world, but entirely reasonable for someone raised in the Philippines.  Hell, to this day you can't get a divorce in that country.

I really don't think we're disagreeing here about Mayweather, but I'd argue that Pacquiao is endowed with a greater perspective given his fame and international travel. To pretend that he's just like any other guy in the Philippines isn't exactly fair. Maybe he is just pandering politically or maybe he really believes homosexuals should be stoned and women shouldn't have access to reasonable reproductive care. Either way, he is using his position of power to do things that I believe are "bad." I know I am toeing the "no politics" line here, so I don't have any interest in debating the merits or lack there of of these specific political actions. People may disagree with me and that's fine.

My whole point from the beginning wasn't meant to be political, but that I think it is a little dubious to "cheer" for Pacquiao just because Mayweather has done some things that are worse, at least as far as we know. They're both not good people in my opinion, and I don't plan to "cheer" for either. They're both excellent fighters, so I will enjoy the fight from that perspective. I don't need to craft some good vs. evil scenario in my head that I don't think exists.

(Side note: My comment about Mayweather giving away money was a poor assumption. He really doesn't do much charitable activity, which with that kind of money is appalling.)

about the anti-gay stuff, as I don't really follow his political career.  It's actually kind of surprising, as all of the Filipinos I've known are a lot more accepting of homosexuals and transgendered people than the "average American".  At least according to my Filipina ex.

If it makes you feel any better, he hardly shows up for work in the Legislature and doesn't really have all that much influence in his current position.  Although he will if he runs for president.

and not changing now.

When's the last time an elite black fighter lost to an Asian fighter in a major championship bout? I'm sure it's happened, but I can't think of one.

But I'm rooting for Manny anyhow.

The only person in boxing who might be craftier than Floyd Mayweather Jr. is Don King, and I say that only because in addition to being an evil genius who figured out how to milk this game second to none, King got away with murder. Twice. But Don King doesn't step in the ring to fight, so ultimately he never really has complete control. Floyd just about does. Floyd will win, unless he makes a mistake and Manny gets lucky, but Floyd isn't known for making mistakes in the ring. He waited until Manny didn't have the punching power any more, whether due to age or lack of PEDs or both, and until the hype had peaked. And as others have said, there will be a rematch, and it will be the last fight of both men's careers, and they'll make even more money and retire stupendously rich, wondering if/when dementia will take over.

Yes, he is an awful person, and I expect him to win. But I don't think it will be easy, as he's never fought a lefty with Pacquiao's blend of speed and power. Fight goes the distance and is fairy close, IMO. Pacquiao has a chance, but in the end I expect Mayweather is just too quick getting back in defense and too technical.

Mo money.  This is boxing.  Logic has nothing to do with it.  Paydays matter.  Mayweather could fulfill his contract with CBS Sports/Showtime if he loses this first one and wins a rematch in say 6 months to a year.  Then HBO would re-enter the picture in the bid to re-sign Mayweather.  Huge money for Money, even before the third and decisive rubber match.  Who knows how much could be made in a series of matches like this?  Boxing is a business.  Even a shady one, perhaps.

Several years ago this would have been a dream fight.

I will always penalize Mayweather's career for dodging Pacman.

Yes, shut up, he did dodge him. He was scared and he waited until age slowed him enough that this fight is a complete waste of time.  If there's one thing Mayweather has, it's speed.

I expect this fight to be utterly contemptible and will not be watching.

People here bash this guy. I get that he's not a saint, but damn Manny is known to have been somewhat of a sleeze in his day. It's funny to hear people smack Mayweather left and right but continue to watch football every day when most of these football players are 10 times worse them May weather will ever be. Just a bunch of hypocrites if u ask me. He's no Saint but he's not the devil either!

Floyd by decision I expect him to win by 4 to 6 points on the cards. Too much speed too much defense. Don't expect it to be overly exciting unless pac knows he's down and goes for broke in the last few rounds.

So half the people think Money cruises to an easy decision and the other half think this fight isn't worth watching because it wasn't 5 years ago. Most pound-for-pound lists have Mayweather-Pacquiao as #1 and #2. The two best fighters in the world (still) facing off? Nah, you're right, not worth it because it's not when they were #1 and #2 five years ago.

Second, I think the fight itself won't be some kind of all-action slugfest, but it will be good. A slower, but more powerful Marcos Maidana gave seriously trouble last year in their first fight. Mayweather has struggled against quick southpaws in the past (Zab Judah knocked him down, but it wasn't called) while counter-punchers have had the best success against Pacquiao. I largely agree with the sentiment that if it goes to the judges that Mayweather will win, unless Pacquiao just unloads on him round after round after round.

To all the posters raving about Floyd's supposed speed advantage, have you ever seen Manny fight?  He is just as quick, if not quicker, than Floyd.

Now I'll grant you that Floyd does know how to avoid getting hit, but he has never faced an opponent like Manny, who will hit you from a direction you never thought was possible.

Last thing, a boxer will lose speed with age, but if he works at it, his strength is the last thing to go.  It's called a punchers chance, and it's how we've had champions in their 40's.  Personally, I can hit just as hard as I could 15 years ago.  Just not as fast.
