OT: MLB trade deadline

Submitted by Ultimate Quizmaster on
30 minutes left and it doesn't look like the tigers are acquiring a bat. Hopefully Washburn can provide the extra wins for this team.

Correct me if Im wrong but wasnt the Sean Casey trade announced a few minutes after the deadline. Hold out hope because something can still happen.

The Tigers were in discussions with the Orioles for Luke Scott, but it doesn't look like anything happened unless the trade just has yet to be announced.

Yeah, they kind of confused me. I wouldnt have done the Washburn deal if I didnt know that I could do a deal for a solid bat. They need hitting more then pitching and if they had the prospects to Halladay, how come the couldnt offer a little less to the Nats and get Dunn?

They didn't have the prospects to get Halladay. They had the prospects to get Washburn. Halladay is a better pitcher than Washburn. He is younger than Washburn. He is also signed through 2010, unlike Washburn. Washburn was acquired for Luke French, who has impressed in his first few MLB starts, and a good, but not elite, prospect. Halladay would have commanded at least two elite prospects and then another couple good ones as supplements. With respect to Dunn, it would have been nice to get him, but the Nationals have a deluded/incompetent front office that generally overprices their better players at the trade deadline (i.e. Alfonso Soriano, Chad Cordero, etc.). Furthermore, if they were to trade Dunn away, they would worsen their team to the point that nobody would come to games anymore, something that they have often considered before past trade deadlines. All that said, I agree that the Tigers should have gotten a bat. However, Leyland said earlier this month that if Guillen came back healthy enough to hit well, they would equate it to a deadline acquisition of a bat.

Why did someone neg this post? Seth speaks the truth - Washburn was acquired for a fraction of the price that the Tigers would have to pay to get Halladay. Seth outlined the obvious reasons why. Minus points should be for trolls, and for people who are patently offensive. Seth was neither. People need to suck it up when someone disagrees.

I was hoping on dunn or willingham right at the deadline...hopfully they can pick up a bat off the waver wire in august, I don't think they will maintain their lead without more consistant run production

This is the no-waiver deadline. Teams can still acquire players in August via waivers. (Being waived in baseball is different than in other sports; GMs will cycle their entire rosters on waivers over the course of a season.)
