OT- MLB Trade Deadline Open Thread

Submitted by WMUgoblue on

Well the deadline is at 4pm but the A's and Red Sox probably just had the biggest deal of the day, and the biggest deal of the year too I suppose. It's a bit of a head scratcher as Cespedes was leading the A's in hits this year and also was their best postseason hitter the past 2 seasons, and they gave him up for a rental (albeit a good one) of Jon Lester. That said that rotation in the postseason is incredibly formidable, but can they hit enough?

Now I certainly don't want the Tigers to panic and mortgage everything for David Price, but it would be nice to get a platoon catcher or another bullpen arm. I'll be checking on the thread every now and then at work and update trades into the OP as they come in.

EDIT: Tommy Milone traded from the A's for Sam Fuld from the Twins. Platoon of Gomes and Fuld in LF now for Oakland.

EDIT #2: John Lackey to the Cardinals for Joe Kelly, and Allen Craig. The Red Sox could be scary good next year.

EDIT #3 could be massive:

This is what I'm wondering. Probably what's left of their prospects, maybe a Smyly...??? I'm not sure if they gain anything if they trade a pitcher for pitcher. I'd like to see them keep their position players because I don't think their bats are strong enough as it is.

Asdrubal Cabrera to the Washington Nationals for a prospect.... Definitely seems liek the Indians are kind of giving up but smart moves for them since they were not going to resign Masterson or Cabrera at the end of the year

He has power but his OBP is cratering (sub .300, which is bad for a SS, let alone an OF). He also has a hard stop in his contract after 2015 - if he's not resigned, he can't be offered arbitration and is a free agent. If his reputation doesn't tank - and if it hasn't yet it's not likely to next year - he'll get a big deal on the open market.

The interesting bits will happen after the season, when the Yankees and Sox try to sign Lester as a free agent.

Have to assume Castellanos and Smyly would be gone in a Price trade since the Tigers minor league system has pretty much nothing left in it, at least as far as anything good anywhere near the majors. Maybe Iglesias too.

Woooo.  The Tigers and the A's man.  Can't believe Dombroski made it happen, really interested in what Detroit gave up for this.

EDIT:  AJAX pulled out in middle of the game, part of deal to Rays.
