OT- MLB Trade Deadline Open Thread
Well the deadline is at 4pm but the A's and Red Sox probably just had the biggest deal of the day, and the biggest deal of the year too I suppose. It's a bit of a head scratcher as Cespedes was leading the A's in hits this year and also was their best postseason hitter the past 2 seasons, and they gave him up for a rental (albeit a good one) of Jon Lester. That said that rotation in the postseason is incredibly formidable, but can they hit enough?
Now I certainly don't want the Tigers to panic and mortgage everything for David Price, but it would be nice to get a platoon catcher or another bullpen arm. I'll be checking on the thread every now and then at work and update trades into the OP as they come in.
EDIT: Tommy Milone traded from the A's for Sam Fuld from the Twins. Platoon of Gomes and Fuld in LF now for Oakland.
EDIT #2: John Lackey to the Cardinals for Joe Kelly, and Allen Craig. The Red Sox could be scary good next year.
EDIT #3 could be massive:

They give up? Smyly? Porcello? Castellanos? Definitely some AA guys....
This is what I'm wondering. Probably what's left of their prospects, maybe a Smyly...??? I'm not sure if they gain anything if they trade a pitcher for pitcher. I'd like to see them keep their position players because I don't think their bats are strong enough as it is.
looks like price is a tiger
Asdrubal Cabrera to the Washington Nationals for a prospect.... Definitely seems liek the Indians are kind of giving up but smart moves for them since they were not going to resign Masterson or Cabrera at the end of the year
If the Tigers trade Smyly to get Price, where are they going to get LH relief help? Another deal possibly?
Or maybe Coke is dangling those nudey pics he has of Illitch and DD and telling them that he has to remain their lefty reliever (I swear this is the only reason he still has a job with the Tigers).
Source says Tigers appear to be front runner for Price.

Good luck
Is there a way to surf mgoblog on android
He has power but his OBP is cratering (sub .300, which is bad for a SS, let alone an OF). He also has a hard stop in his contract after 2015 - if he's not resigned, he can't be offered arbitration and is a free agent. If his reputation doesn't tank - and if it hasn't yet it's not likely to next year - he'll get a big deal on the open market.
The interesting bits will happen after the season, when the Yankees and Sox try to sign Lester as a free agent.
Have to assume Castellanos and Smyly would be gone in a Price trade since the Tigers minor league system has pretty much nothing left in it, at least as far as anything good anywhere near the majors. Maybe Iglesias too.
The Moya kid would be part of it I would assume...
Right now the rumor is Drew and one of Nick or Suarez. I really hope it's Suarez.
Edit - On second thought I hope they don't make that trade at all.
I would like to see Smyly, Iglesias and Ray for Price.
Save Nick and Suarez is the new SS of the future.
This is why 3-teams are involved. Rays don't want Scherzer. Scherzer goes for prospects and prospects go to Rays
Lose Scherzer for Price? I don't understand
We get another year with Price and a chance to extend him
Scherzer isn't coming back, with price we have another year with him, which is better than no scherzer. I'd make the deal.
Why would they trade Max to get Price? It's basically a wash then. Unless they get another player.
That doesn't make much sense for the Tigers, essentially we're giving up Scherzer and prospects for a year and 3 months of Price?
looks like we got price
Did Soria just load the bases? Our bullpen is a vacuum of shit
He had a strikeout to start the inning but Eaton was able to reach 1st because Avila botched it. Then a single, and an IBB to Jose Abreu (probably a good call).
welcome to detroit price
Are you trolling? Where is the source?
... Is a treatable illness.
(Just giving you a hard time about the misplaced comment.)
the Tigers are going to give up Porcello.
I hope not. But if they were shopping Smyly they would not have started him today.
looks very very ordinary since he got here.
Ugh.
Done deal: #Rays trade David Price to the #Tigers. #Pirates get Zobrist #Rays get slew of prospects including Marte from Pittsburgh

Who did the Tigers give up? Is that known right now?
I thought Max but I guess not. Wow
Good thing they didn't try to acquire any bullpen help because apparently just putting on the Tigers uniform causes bullpen arms to burninate games
If they didn't give up Porcello or Smyly then Smyly and Verlander/Porcello could move to the bullpen during the postseason. Nice.
Tigers get price in reportedly 3-team deal involving Rays & Mariners
Early word is that Smyly and Austin Jackson are on the move.
Smyly would probably be one of the best arms out of the bullpen durning the playoffs. I'm not sure yet if this helps any....have to wait until the dust settles.
Woooo. The Tigers and the A's man. Can't believe Dombroski made it happen, really interested in what Detroit gave up for this.
EDIT: AJAX pulled out in middle of the game, part of deal to Rays.
Austin Jackson appears to be part of the deal...
Oh my.
They just took Austin out of the game. I liked him.
Hearing Smyly to the Rays too
Center field?
Rajai Davis...yikes? Double whammy with the way Jackson was playing lately, but does this move Kinsler back to the leadoff spot?

AJ not the D guy he used to be. DP is best LH in AL. No brainer.
I'd argue that Chris Sale is the best LH in the AL, but to each their own.
