OT: Miss Michigan USA to UM Campus
I looked through the board and didn't see this posted, which honestly surprises me...
Looks like we will have some highly welcome visitors on campus in September. It's Notre Dame weekend, so I might not be able to head down to South Bend, instead making a trip over to the Power Center...
I know she won and all, but to me... Miss Michigan will always be...
That's actually a pretty cool opportunity. The article estimates the pageant bringing in 375,000 dollars to the local economy, and it's pretty prestigious stuff to have associated with the city, regardless of how you view the event.
Unless you are willing to argue that the prestige of the University of Michigan as a whole is lower than that of a beauty pageant, I spot a flaw in your logic.
If on the other hand, you agree that UM's prestige is EVEN HIGHER THAN A BEAUTY PAGEANTs, we can only conclude that associating a beauty pageant with our fair city will LOWER its prestige.
Those "contributes to the local economy" figures are self-interested silliness on the part of the promoters, as anyone who bought "contributes to the local economy" arguments from sports franchise owners requiring a new stadium, or from sponsorship of Olympics, World Cup, etc., will attest after the fact.
I don't know? Bathing suits. I lived in East quad for two years and there was an overabundance of girls that looked as good or better than her. Okay, sorry I almost said that with a straight face.
wait, East Quad?? really? cause in my day (late 90s) that's where the granola chicks resided.

I was gonna say......
I already had the cursor over the down-arrow but I'm glad I read on.
on the 50 yard line in Michigan Stadium at halftime. Let her do the rest.
ESPNU will cover it live.
Adding something of lower prestige/value to something of higher prestige/value does not necessarily lower the prestige/value of the combined entity. That hosting the pageant would lower the overall "prestige of the University of Michigan as a whole" is conjecture. "Prestige" is also a very subjective measure. Some may agree with you, others obviously do not.
As for contribution to the local economy, I think this is more likely to do so than not (as in the case of the Olympics, new stadia, large-scale multi-day events, etc). I would imagine that the investment to host a pageant is relatively small, whereas the additional expected business to local businesses could be significant. The business case for a smaller 2-day event is likely pretty compelling.
Hotness LeBronified...
My wife will be better looking.
Perks of being a white guy interested in brown and arabic women.
She was in my building a few months ago (I work at a community college in her hometown) talking to students about achieving their dreams or something. I looked down at her from my floor and thought "Eh big deal" then a month or so later she won the pageant.
Not the best story ever but whatever.
Maybe not ever, but at least since the American Revolution.
This explains why you spell your name Geoff instead of Jeff.
The comments on that article are hilarious BTW.
Also Miss Teen USA's name is Stormi Bree Henley.
Let that sink in. Her parents actually named her that... it's almost like they predicted she would never need to be remotely professional at anything besides looking good!
...Stormi will have a welcomed place in Adult movies.
But to marry someone with a last name that starts with an "s" sound.
Or just make that her porn name (see other reply)
Hopefully they can bring in Carrot Top to host.
A beauty pageant in Ann Arbor?
