OT: Mike & Mike: Make 1 out of 10 half court shots for $20M or 2 years in jail

Submitted by amaizenblue402 on

I was listening to Mike & Mike on my way to work this morning (if you don't like Mike & Mike, you can stop reading).  They were throwing out hypothetically that if you were given 10 half court shots and all you had to do was make 1 for $20 million but if you miss them all you go to jail for 2 years, would you do it?  I think I would have to try this.  Thoughts?

EDIT:  I didn't hear how long you would have to practice, but lets just say this is a one-time chance and you would have to do this spur of the moment if you wanted a shot at it.

EDIT2:  myrtlebeachmaizenblue informed us that they said it's a white collar jail, no risk of harm with conjugal visits.  Also, that is $20 million net, taxes paid for you.

Are you kidding?  That's an unbelieveably bad deal unless you are a pretty incredible shooter.  The gain in quality of life from getting the 20 million would be decent.  Say, a 2x increase in quality of life.  The losses from the two years in jail would be MASSIVE, at least a 10x decrease in quality of life, both due to those two years and the neverending consequences, as others have mentioned.

Personally, I would need at least 99% certainty of coming out on the good end to take that deal.  Maybe higher.  Given my basketball history, I'm probably 25% or less to hit one of those ten, sadly.

Absolutely. Odds are not too bad. If I landed in jail, I'd just spend the two rent-free years getting another degree. Maybe I'd nab a master's in liberal arts from the Harvard extension school or something like that. I'd figure out how to do something beneficial that I'd otherwise not have the time to do.

Besides, jail's not too bad. Prison is the real bitch.

With kids, though, I couldn't stand the risk.

Nothing stops. Nothing... or you will do the hardest time there is. No more protection from the guards. I'll pull you out of that one-bunk Hilton and cast you down with the Sodomites. You'll think you've been fucked by a train!

I'd be shocked if given 10 half court shots a professional player would hit one even half the time.  I remember in high school somedays we would 'practice' half court shots as a break.  6 guys on that team played d1 basketball and two are in the nba and not one of them was hitting at 1 in 10 rate and that is with no pressure.

I'd do it. I have a pretty good jumper and this is the only way I'd ever sniff $20 mil. It's a huge risk, but I would take it. Especially if the two years is done in a minimum security prison.

I couldnt imagine how nerve racking that would be. You miss you go to prison. Wow.

Make the shot, and Kate Upton is worshipfully in love with you for the rest of your days.

Miss the shot, and you've got Sofia Vergara screaming in your ear for the rest of your days.

As someone who has a good friend and business partner that has been in Prison (White Collar, the lowest security you can find) for the past 9 months, I can strongly say that I would not do this.

Watching my friend's life, marriage, financial situation and relationships (including the one with myself) be strained and sometimes ruined is not worth the chance for $20MM.

Now, give me 10 FREE THROWS and you've got a different story!

No way. Not only do I not even remotely trust my basketball skills, but its just not worth being thrown in jail for two years, no matter how minimum security it is. The relationships with your family, significant other, and everyone else could very well be destroyed, or strained at the very least, by spending even a month there.

If I had an hour to practice I think I would take the bet. White collar jail is better than some motels in America, so missing all ten would give me time to get jacked and further my education to masters / phd lol.
